Long Beach, Washington

Travel & Leisure Magazine named the Long Beach boardwalk as one of the top eleven in the nation. The Today Show featured the Long Beach boardwalk as the most unique. And we have to agree.

The boardwalk sits just outside the reach of the mighty Pacific and stretches for almost half a mile through the rolling dunes. It’s only a short walk from most downtown Long Beach activities and is a popular attraction for visitors and locals alike.

So what makes this boardwalk so amazing?

1. You won’t find crowds on the Long Beach Boardwalk. It isn’t covered with carnival rides and hot dog vendors (those are downtown!). It appears as if suspended in the grassy dunes.

2. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean or the sunrise over the Willapa Hills.

3. It’s a wonderful spot to snap photos for the family album or Instagram. Be sure to share your adventures! #longbeachwa

4. It’s the perfect stroll to take with ice cream or any sweet treat or a special someone.

5. If you’re wanting lunch with a view, have a seat at one of the picnic tables along the way and chow down on some takeout from one of our local restaurants.

6. The boardwalk will inspire you to wander! Look for steps leading off into the dunes or down to the shore.

7. It’s a comfortable spot to look for wildlife. Watch for whales, eagles, and shorebirds. Be sure to bring some binoculars.

8. Enjoy panoramic views of the North Head Lighthouse, beach, and surf.

9. Learn about the environment and history at one of the interpretive displays.

10. It’s a safe place to watch storms roll in across the Pacific during storm season.

11. Park at the Bolstad beach approach and walk down the boardwalk to [pickled fish] for a cocktail.

12. The boardwalk makes a gorgeous backdrop for small, intimate weddings or elopements.

13. On windy, bright days, hang out on the boardwalk to watch kites drift through the sky.

14. You can keep going! If your short stroll along the boardwalk came to an end too soon, simply hop on the Discovery Trail. It crosses beneath the boardwalk and runs south all the way to Ilwaco and north to a bronze sculpture of Clark’s Tree behind the Breakers.

15. Find plenty of free parking on either end of the boardwalk as well as public restrooms.

Location: Park at the Sid Snyder beach approach or the Bolstad beach approach in downtown Long Beach for easy access to the boardwalk.

Europe Trip 2010 - Day 10

January 02, 2011

Amsterdam (pronounced /ˈæmstərdæm/; Dutch [ˌɑmstərˈdɑm] ( listen)) is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, with an urban population of 1,209,419 and a metropolitan population of 2,158,592.[6] The city is in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. It comprises the northern part of the Randstad, the sixth-largest metropolitan area in Europe, with a population of approximately 8.1 million according to larger estimates.

Its name is derived from Amstellerdam,[7] indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. Settled as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age, a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading centre for finance and diamonds.[8] In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded, and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were formed. The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam (in Dutch: 'Grachtengordel'), located in the heart of Amsterdam, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2010.

The city is the financial and cultural capital of the Netherlands.[9] Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and 7 of the world's top 500 companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city.[10] In 2010, Amsterdam was ranked 13th globally on quality of living[11] by Mercer, and previously ranked 3rd in innovation by 2thinknow in the Innovation Cities Index 2009.[12]

The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city centre. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Anne Frank House, its red-light district, and its many cannabis coffee shops draw more than 3.66 million international visitors annually.[13]

10/28/12 - The Haehnle Sanctuary is a place where a lot of cranes (mostly Sandhill cranes) nest as part of the fall migration. In the morning and evening, you can see thousands of cranes taking off in the morning and landing at night. I decided to go this morning. This is around 50 miles from where I live. I got up early for a Sunday and got out there before dawn. I didn't count on the fact that it was gold (a little below freezing). I didn't bring my gloves and by the time I left, my hands were frozen -- I couldn't take my camera off my monopod. It was worth the frozen hands. A lot of cranes took off and I got a lot of pictures. This was one of my favorites. There were a lot of black birds flying in the same direction as these four cranes. They all just flooded the sky.

At the MFA, I chose to take a picture of the painting by Theodore Rousseau called “Pool in the Forest”. It was created through oil on canvas and depicts trees, fields, water, and in the background you can see cows.

1.What renewable natural resources are visible in this artwork? (see text p. 3)

The renewable natural resources are soil, light energy, wind, plants, trees, and cows

2.What intermediate-renewable resources are visible in the piece (see text p. 3).

There are no intermediate-renewable resources visible in this piece

3. In your opinion, which fields of study might be represented in the piece? (see text, p. 5).

In this piece, fields of study such as Ecology, Geology, Geography and Biology

4. Interpreting your piece, where on the continuum from ecocentric- to anthropocentric would you consider the artist’s viewpoint? (see text. p. 12).

The artist seems to truly appreciate nature for what it is since there are no human disruptions presented in the painting. I therefore believe that his viewpoint is ecocentric, meaning that he cares about the overall interactions in the environment, since species as well as their interaction with nature is depicted.

5. Interpreting the artwork in terms of the “Human Influence Index” (see text p. 17), approximately what is the level of human influence is depicted in your piece?

Looking at this painting only, the level of human influence seems low because nothing in this piece connects to humans. This is a natural place that has not, as it seems, been damaged or influenced by human interactions.

6. How would you interpret energy flow in the depiction shown in the artwork? (see text, p. 31 and Figure 4.7 p. 69).

Energy is depicted as light energy, which causes photosynthesis in producers such as grass, trees plants, which are visible in the painting. This turns into chemical energy and species feed off of the natural resources, the cows for example, until energy leaves the system though respiration in the form of heat.

7. Approximately which ecosystem/biome is depicted in the artwork you observe? (see text. Figure 2.15 and pp. 78-84).

This landscapes’ ecosystem could very likely be a deciduous forest because it includes all the trees, fields and water but it is not too wet like a rainforest or too dry like the Savanna. It seems to get a good amount of precipitation, which is a huge characteristic of this biome, as well as different temperatures throughout the seasons.

8. Describe one of the biogeochemical cycles summarized on pp. 36-41 for the landscape you observe.

The water cycle, also called the hydrologic cycle is depicted in this painting. The water in the pond evaporates from land and transpires from the plants, trees and fields shown in the painting. The water moves into the atmosphere as water vapor, where it condenses and later on comes back down again as precipitation.

10. Describe examples of succession (pp. 74-75) and/or human disturbance in the landscape.

There is no primary succession visible in this painting. However, there may have been, without us knowing, secondary succession such as fire or landslide that have had an effect on the environment depicted in the painting. Some vegetation may have been removed, especially from the cows eating the grass. Nevertheless the succession seems quite minimal.
