Note, 1021 was named THE GREATER MANCHESTER RADIO in November 1993. The name was removed in December 2003 to allow it to be named SONY CENTRE ARNDALE on 20th December 2003. The name was removed in December 2006 to allow it to be named STARLIGHT EXPRESS on 3rd December 2006, the name being removed in August 2007. It was modified from a T68 to a T68X tram in February 2010, and was withdrawn from passenger service on 6th November 2013 but retained for ice-breaking duties until 21st January 2014. It was sold for scrap to C.F. Booth Limited, departing Manchester on 29th October 2014

The need for full power is over as Western Cavalier has cleared the summit of Dainton and the run down to Totnes can be done with the favourable gradient requiring little if any engine power. The service is the down Cornish Riviera, non air con stock and despite the indifferent weather there are some door windows fully open. Perhaps someone was savouring the noise on the climb!
The head code should have been 1B45 but was actually 1C45. That would have been a down South Wales reporting letter.
1021 was a Western that eluded me for ages for haulage. In the end it was on the 13,30 Paddington to Penzance when seen at Castle Cary. Knowing it should be on the up overnight from Penzance we had an intercept drive to Truro and a rail trip to Redruth to get it in the bag. From then on it continued to evade further haulage!
1021 was one of the last survivors and was withdrawn after sustaining collision damage. She wasn't the only victim to go this way but she was accident free until then. There were not many able to claim this status and only one of the preserved ones avoided a tiff under BR rule.
Both sides of the running lines at Dainton summit had refuge sidings as can be seen on this the up side.
In the days of unfitted freight it could have been used to have the brakes pinned down and so not obstruct the line to following traffic while this lengthy task was carried out.
Possibly a banking or pilot engine could be dropped off.
To judge from the overgrown track it all ceased when diesels took over as well as the lack of fully unfitted freight workings.
1021 will be non stop at Totnes and when coming off Dainton full power will be applied as the short section of level at Totnes becomes another stiff climb - this time on Rattery Bank.
Fireman on steam engines had a hard time on these gradients.
