I didn't have enough fabric to finish the back for my other quilt today so instead I pieced together another top for 100 Quilts for Kids. I had a lot of help with this one though. I had bee blocks that have been sitting in my sewing room for a while now that I hadn't sewn up so I pieced a few of them together into this quilt. I made up another segment for the back and just need to find some fabric to put around it so I can get this one quilted.

With the Autumn migration, I heard from my photo club that there should be great bird sightings at Cosumnes River Preserve in Galt, California and couldn't wait to check it out. Since both my husband and I prefer sunset shooting to morning, we headed out there late on Thursday afternoon.

The Preserve promises good things in the upcoming weeks, but the ponds are not yet full enough to attract as many birds as expected. Luckily, a chance encounter with a birder pointed us to the Woodbridge Ecological Preserve just 10 miles down the freeway in Lodi. We were in for a major treat - actually two treats.

Woodbridge is a protected area where sandhill cranes and other migratory birds come in to feed in the farm fields and overnight by the hundreds. More on that another time.

The second treat was meeting Lisa.

Through the Golden Hour and into the Blue, we were happily photographing cranes as they swooped down onto a large pond. We were just thinking of packing it in when Lisa walked up and asked us about our lenses. She had arrived with some friends and, standing a short distance away, had been watching the birds.

Lisa told me she shoots with a Nikon and particularly loves macro-photography, especially photographing bees. After a lively discussion, we said our good-byes. Lisa returned to her group and we walked back to our car.

I was kicking myself for not asking Lisa to participate in the Human Family/100 Strangers projects (and wondering why DH hadn't swooped in) when I realized she was still in the parking area with her friends. I had the wrong lens on my camera, so I grabbed my iPhone and walked over to her.

Lisa immediately said, "yes!" She was totally warm and outgoing and I was in my usual "too shy to ask too many questions" state, but she helped put me at ease.

Lisa is a civil litigation attorney who originally lived in Alameda. She took up skydiving, met her boyfriend of four years and, after he nursed her through a broken leg, permanently moved out to Lodi to be with him.

At that point, my husband joined us and we talked some more photography, promising to keep in touch. We have already exchanged emails (on photography, of course!).

Ella was stranger #1 in my photography project of 100 strangers.

I saw Ella sitting outside a coffee shop in Cambridge as I walked past. I continued walking but eventually did an about turn and thought I must get the project underway. As I returned towards Ella, she had begun walking herself. I made my approach and to my delight, Ella agreed to have her portrait taken.

We walked a short distance to a set of steps where Ella sat patiently whilst I took her portrait.

Ella worked in a nearby lingerie shop and with that, she had to go.

Thank you Ella!

That already made a certain time that I said myself “it would be necessary that I face the project, 100 strangers “.

Ok, to kos I would launch out in the adventure!!!

Never by booking our travel of family I do not have to imagine to be able to meet refugees!

At the exit of an archaeological site this found this lady are glance my to disturb, (like each glance to take refuge).

I shine initially has to give money, then I have to ask whether that did not disturb it

to take it in photograph.

Not, she says, with a certain pride!!!

I am taken only one only picture.

Then to start the conversation am I it board to ask “or want you to go “?

Bulgaria says me it.

Thereafter do I ask, where are you going?

Then they were melted in tears, impossible of still marked some words.

I wish it good luck, etc .....

Many emotions in my first meeting, never I will not forget!!!

It is only after my return of travel which I realised that I have to forget to ask for the first name of each people that I took in photograph.

But good I go improved, promised!

I think that this project will be very beneficial for me, initially of conversing with a foreigner then to take the picture, then to write one to summarize opposition, to translate it (thank you google),….

One year ago I would not have never to think of being able to fair this!!!

Thank you FLICKR!!!

Thank you with you all !!!!

PS: to excuse my English !

Flashdance Barbie's body should have also been used for the Harley Davidson's Barbie.

I spotted Mike waking down the road with his earphones in and his head down, he was moving like he had some purpose. I also loved his tattoos and overall look and thought he would be a great person to say hello to and I have a dark parking garage in mind as a backdrop so I made my approach waving, smiling and motioning to him to remove his headphones.

At moments like these you know it will go one of two ways; you either get your ass kicked or you meet a lovely guy and get a portrait! Fortunately Mike was super lovely and really happy to get invoked posing for some pictures.

Mike was on his way to get a two finished across his chest (weirdly I bumped into him later on and the tattoo artist who worked on him was with him and was someone who Barbara Asboth had photographed previously). Mike is seriously pumped, he works out and sometimes models for bodybuilding, fitness, tattoo and fetish shoots. He is also a pro wrester - pretty cool all round really!

His vast array of stunning tattoos are inspired by horror films, we checked for a classic Nightmare on Elm St and yes Freddy was present on his left arm.

A super cool guy and lovely to bump into. The supplementary shots will be on instagram later: www.instagram.com/urbanscot/ please follow me there if you want to keep up with my portrait projects

Check out the wonderful work of the other contributors to the 100 Strangers Group on flickr!

Matthew was one of the last strangers that I met in London during the 100 strangers meet. He was walking along the road with a friend chatting when I approached him. He had such a stylish look- very 'London', and took being asked for a portrait very much in his stride as if this sort of thing happened to him every day!

When Chatting to Matthew, I found out that he was a fashion blogger, which explains his style, and he also does a bit of photography too.

His blog is www.thegentlemanblogger.com and is awesome- it explains why he was at home in front of the lens!

We took a few different shots, but I loved the lighting in this one, coupled with the red streak in the background, which I had taken shots with and without in order to decide later.

Thanks Matthew for being part of my project and I hope you like your portrait.

The lighting is just how the fountain is always lit at night. The magic is in how well the 5D handles 1600 ISO... and the ability of the Canon 85mm f/1.2 to see in the dark!

I've been meaning to start a 100 strangers project for some time now and when I saw Tasfia and a friend ahead of me in the park I decided the time had come to take the plunge.

When I caught up with Tasfia and explained the project she was very happy to help out. It was a pleasure meeting her and her friend Bigyan who is my stranger number two. I passed on my business card and promised to send a copy of the photos which I did later in the evening.

To understand the magical circumstances behind meeting Wayne a few weeks ago, I have to go back to March.

I was returning from Canada to our home in California, one of the rare times I did not have our two dogs with me. It was too perfect an opportunity to pass up, so I added an extra day to my drive in order to explore the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex without worrying about the pups behaving.

The Sacramento NWR Complex is made up of five refuges located at the northern end of California’s Sacramento Valley and right on one of the United States’ main migratory flyways.

I spent the afternoon of my arrival doing the auto route at the main refuge and headquarters, driving by two more further down the valley before checking into my motel. The following day, I arrived at a fourth, Colusa NWR, before dawn. I still get goosebumps thinking about the enchantment of that morning!

Each time I finished the auto route circuit, I thought I’d head home, but the magic of the place held me and I would drive the circuit once more.

I was on my fourth and last trip around, when I stopped at one of the viewing platforms where I had a huge surprise – someone calling my name. It was one of my neighbors! We joked that we never see each other on the street where we live, yet bump into each other at a nearly deserted refuge 2-1/2 hours from home in the middle of a winter morning. They were staying with family in the area, had just arrived, and were leaving in a few minutes so, beyond this 15 minute window, we would have missed each other. Coincidence?

Two months later, my husband and I were visiting Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico. On one of our loops around the auto route, we ran into another bird photography couple and were chatting when we were passed by a gentleman in a white van with an official logo on the side. He stopped to ask us what birds we had seen. The following day, we ran into him at one of Bosque’s viewing platforms, had a short talk about the presence of mountain lions and moved on.

Jump forward five months. My husband, who had yet to visit the Sacramento complex, and I decided, although far, we could make it there and back as a day trip, leaving the dogs safely at home. We did the auto route at Sacramento HQ first, hitting Colusa second.

Stopping at the same viewing platform where I had met our neighbor back in March, I went off to take some photos of turtles sunning themselves. When I turned around, Don was walking back down from the deck talking with Wayne, the volunteer from Bosque del Apache! Now… I had seen a man get out of his truck by the platform when we were still a distance away and thought it too much of a coincidence, but he sure looked like the guy from New Mexico… and there he was! We have always thought these refuges were magical, but this location must have some special power to reunite people who initially have met, not hundreds, but over a thousand miles apart, giving them another opportunity to have a more meaningful interaction.

Despite having to (again!!) deal with high-noon sun and no shade to speak of, I saw this as the universe giving me a second (or third, depending on how you look at it) chance to ask Wayne about himself and to participate in my Strangers/Human Family project.

Wayne is a volunteer at Bosque del Apache the rest of the year and a walking bird encyclopedia. He also has the eyes of a hawk, spotting tiny birds in the shadows of tree branches, pointing them out as we talked. He has family in Northern California and, while visiting, is volunteering some time at the complex. His plan is to work there on weekends, returning to Bosque when the spring migration starts. This is another remarkable happenstance as we were meeting on a week day and he was switching to weekends the following Saturday.

We plan on keeping in touch and, hopefully, will meet up with him at a refuge again.

Moral of the story… If you listen carefully, coincidences are just the universe giving you another chance to wake up to possibilities.

The JM-100 Nimbus was the first version of the Nimbus line, and the 200 was the fourth. Versions 2-3 were lost to time but I may still have some old pictures floating around. The JM-100 was built in the 1990s, and the 200 was built recently. The engine flare on the back of the 100 was a recent addition as it originally had no visible propulsion system.

I recently bought a roll of Fomapan 100 to try out in my Pentax 645 11n. I only bought the one roll because I've been caught out before buying too much of a "bargain" film only to discover that I didn't like it. For processing, I used Ag Photolab whom I'd not used before because although my usual lab is good for colour film I tend to find the B&W results too contrasty. I set the ISO at 80 rather than 100 because print films usually scan better if they are slightly overexposed. Here are the results. I'm pretty pleased with them. I didn't need to do too much to them to get the look I like and the negatives themselves looked really good to my eye. In the days when I used to do my own printing I would have been confident of being able to produce good prints from these negs.

This is Victoria Lodge at the north end of Talla Reservoir which supplies Edinburgh with water. The lodge was built as the Headquarters of the Edinburgh Water Company and is now a listed building. In the foreground you can see the spillway from the dam but in the current dry conditions there is nothing going down it.

Happy Day 100!

I thought I would challenge myself and attempt a levitating self-portrait for today's picture. I was hoping to do it outside, but it poured all day, so I borrowed some umbrellas and made today's picture.
