It's fog season in Dubai! But it only lasts for 3 days or so. This was shot from the 85th floor of the Princess Tower in Dubai Marina.

It is a Vertical Panorama shot with the D800 & Nikkor 14-24mm

HDR tonemapped with Oloneo PhotoEngine

My dear friends, sorry for not visiting your streams recently. I have been ramping up my photography activities in Dubai (giving workshops, selling prints, shooting for a book, Facebook), and my 'official' job still keeps me busy. Hence not much time left for commenting your photos.

Panorama blue hour shot taken from the City Hall at Southwark, London. On the right you have the Tower Bridge, on the left the Central London skyline and in the center Tower Hill. Lots of tourists and people walking around in this area, that's why some of them are still a bit visible. The big fat building under construction is 20 Fenchurch Street (160 meters tall). I recently read that it will feature a sky garden on top with free public access. Should be interesting, defenitely for the urban photographers out there.

Taken with my Canon Eos 500D and Sigma 10-20mm lens (3 image full HDR panorama).

Jiráskův bridge is the sixth bridge over the Vltava river downstream of Prague connecting Jirasek square right bank of the Prague Old Town and Left Bank district of Smichov.

Its construction was started in 1929 by architect Vlastislav Hofman and Ing. Francis Mencl. As a concrete material was used, five leading pillar is 4.6 m wide lined with granite blocks. The bridge is 310.6 meters long and 21 m wide. Arc has six fields with a span of 45 to 51 m surface of the outer surfaces of artificial stone, plaster, concrete railings and lighting columns are glazed patio surface. Both are located beachhead 13.5 m high pylons with decorative fountains and obelisks. The bridge was put into operation in two stages. First it was the middle of the tram rails in 1931 and then 18th October 1933 the rest. For tram rails proved to be unnecessary and were removed. After the bridge, but resulted only in Prague trolley line connecting both banks of the Vltava.

Taken at the deep water exhibit at the Monterey Aqaurium, this is probably the first in another mini-series. They have a neatly positioned bench to use as an improvised tripod, yet it's hard to get a single shot without too much floor and ceiling (read darkness) either side of the tank itself.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Svatopluk Čech Bridge or Čech Bridge (Most Svatopluka Čecha or Čechův most in Czech) is a arch bridge over river Vltava (Moldau) in Prague, Czech Republic.

Construction of the bridge started in 1905 and finished in 1908. Its length is 169 meters (one of the shortest in Prague) and width is 16 meters.

The bridge connects the Prague districts Holešovice and the Old Town (Staré Město). Construction materials are stone (pillars) and iron (arches). Up to 1961 the roadway was made of wood - a hard specie named Jarrah from Australia. The roadway got very slippery during rains.

I love Nikon's D600. It's fast, amazing at low light, and has some great new features. If only Adobe would provide an update so I can process RAW!

Rochester (Roman name DVROBRIVAE) is on the ancient Celtic route between Dover and London. The Romans paved it and called it Watling Street. It's now known as The A2.

It was The Romans who built the first bridge across The River Medway .Ever since it has been strategically important as the lowest crossing point on The River.

The first Norman Castle, made of wood, was built just after The Norman Conquest (1066), at the top of Boley Hill , to the rear of where The Keep is now.

During The Rebellion of 1088, over the succession to the English throne, Bishop Ode made Rochester a headquarters for the rebellion. Rochester and the castle were besieged. After the garrison capitulated, this first castle was abandoned.

Between 1087 and 1089, Rufus asked Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, to build a new stone castle at Rochester. Gundulf used part of the original Roman wall as a curtain wall.

In 1127 King Henry I granted the castle to the Bishops of Canterbury in perpetuity. William de Corbeil built the massive keep that still dominates the castle today. At 113 feet tall, it is the largest keep in England. The Keep is said to be the best preserved Norman Keep in England or France.

The Gardens and Road which now run along the bottom of The Castle ( Known as The Esplanade) are built on ground reclaimed from The River Medway. The Castle is actually built on a small cliff and it would have been a shear drop into the river

The Alps (French: Alpes; German: Alpen; Italian: Alpi; Romansh: Alps; Slovene: Alpe) is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original.

The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), on the Italian-French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence.

The Alps are generally divided into the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps. The division is along the line between Lake Constance and Lake Como, following the Rhine. The Western Alps are higher, but their central chain is shorter and curved; they are located in Italy, France and Switzerland. The Eastern Alps (main ridge system elongated and broad) belong to Austria, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland.

The Alps are a classic example of what happens when a temperate area at lower altitude gives way to higher elevation terrain. Elevations around the world which have cold climates similar to those found in polar areas have been called alpine. A rise from sea level into the upper regions of the atmosphere causes the temperature to decrease. The effect of mountain chains on prevailing winds is to carry warm air belonging to the lower region into an upper zone, where it expands in volume at the cost of a proportionate loss of heat, often accompanied by the precipitation of moisture in the form of snow or rain.

Get Pushed: enveehaze gave me the following rolling challenge:

Hi Jonathan - I enjoyed looking thru your photos. You have some lovely images. I noticed you seem to focus on people. For your challenge, I would like you to focus on the inanimate instead. Please do a macro. Focus on the ordinary details of an object that make it extraordinary. I hope this is a fun and inspiring challenge for you! I look forward to seeing the result.

I've had similar challenges a few times now, some version of - take an abstract, closeup, no people shot - and it always gives me trouble. That's a good thing of course; it pushes me out of my comfort zone. So here is my attempt - I cheated a little but I also wouldn't have taken it this way without the push. So, as always, a learning experience.

For anybody interested, the challenge came from a Flickr group called Get Pushed, which you can find here: www.flickr.com/groups/getpushed/

This past weekend has been a memorable one in the Bay Area. Again, the fog ninja, Alan, did his fog dance and delivered the goods. While driving up to SF, I knew it was going to be epic with the pea soup-like conditions passing through Daly City. I met up with Alan and off we went to the Marin Headlands. In addition, we met up with Yan before picking our shooting location. We first headed to Hawk Hill but saw the fog was a tad higher than we had expected and subsequently retreated back down to Slacker Hill.

Huffing and puffing the three of us conquered this uphill hike and were treated to a beautiful scene of low fog and glowing lights. Just as we arrived at the summit of Slacker Hill, the fog level lowered a bit and at times was low enough for the deck lights to be seen. The greatest part was when we waited for cars to drive up Conzelman Road for light streams on the right. With every car that came up, all of us would yell “Car! Car!” and quickly start exposing.

As it got brighter we noticed an immense sheet of high clouds towards the north. Just to our dismay the high clouds were too far north and were out of our frames. However, we enjoyed one of the most stunning sunrises I’ve ever seen in SF. It was all worth the lack of sleep.

#39 Done for Sliders Sunday

kiss her in the lightbox, please press L

It is the time of year that I will see the dawn light during my morning trip to work.

I decided to keep a record of sights I see on my way to work. I did not take my bulky DSLR and instead I picked my cheap and humble Fuji S1600 compact for the in-the-car shooting.

In the foggy morning during the last few days, I took a few shots on my way to work and the shots are mostly taken when the car was running in full speed on highway (I was not the driver).

I have no time to carefully frame the composition (the car is running really fast) but they are snapshots showing the scenes on the highway from Richmond to Delta where my workplace is located.

This is the one taken at the traffic light stop on River Road in Delta.

Happy weekend!!

In this photo the bulls are nearing the finishing post and they had to turn left to avoid running into the embankment straight ahead.

Looks like this is what is going to happen now. - I mean that the bulls are going straight on to the embankment.

The runner on the left ought to have controlled the bull to make them turn but handling heaving and seething masses of bull power running in the mud is not at all easy.

The people are already scattering and running for cover. Not to miss the vidographer in the lungi who is recording the run.

-----------------------------------------------------

Adoor in Kerala holds its famous Bull Races every year around the time of Onam. It is a celebration of agrarian existence and is carried on without any grants or aid from the Government. This is a spectacular fiesta of rural Kerala. There are 2-3 other such events that are held in Kerala.

Two racing bulls are hitched together and three men come into action. Two racers with lead ropes on either side of the bulls who try to control the direction and speed if possible and one often obscured by sprays of mud and water, a jockey who rides on a small flat strip of wood.

The bulls race ahead with the men keeping desperately abreast of the thundering hooves. At the end of the racing track there is a 4-6 feet embankment of earth which acts as a protection and a marker for the bulls. The embankment gets totally crowded with onlookers. The bull racers need to turn the bull around and do a 360 degree here but most times that effort fails as the bulls in their racing frenzy would be uncontrollable.

I have no idea on the current status of the bull races. There are enough organisations howling to stop such races but the Supreme Court of India in a judgement a few months ago allowed bull/bullock cart races to go on in Punjab. So chances are that the tradition may still live on.

Chianti is a red Italian wine produced in Tuscany. The first definition of a wine-area called Chianti was made in 1716. The earliest documentation of a Chianti wine dates back to the thirteenth century when viticulture was known to flourish in the Chianti Mountains around Florence. Discover the most celebrated region of Tuscany. The vineyards of this area produce one of the best wines in the world: Chianti Classico. This Wine represents a major source of wealth for the Chianti area, no wonder then that this product has been particularly looked after and protected, in order to distinguish its quality from other wine productions. This is why a rigid legislation has been introduced to regulate the production of Classic Chianti. The first limit obviously regards the geographical area where the grape must grow. But not only the vineyards must be cultivated in the prescribed area: the whole process of wine-making, storage and bottling must take place inside the protected zone. The grape variety from which Chianti is produced is Sangiovese. The alcoholic strength must not exceed 12 %. In addition to this, there are other requirements that must be followed, regarding the average amount of dry product (24 g/l); the acidity rate (4,5 g/l), the colour (intense ruby red), the smell (fruity, with nuances of wildflowers, berries, cherries or plums) and taste (harmonious, dry, strong and with respectable tannin).

We drive on the glorious wine roads of Tuscany. We visit the farms and cellars and of-course taste the great Chianti wine. Here we visit Casale Dello Sparviero. Harmoniously set in the hills of Castellina in Chianti, in the Siena's Classico area, the estate is spread 380 hectares. The vineyards are set on the altitude of 250 metres and encircled by woods and self vegetation. The Casale dated back to XVI century. The building houses the wine cellars, where wine continues its precious evolution in large oak barrels for quality wine.

This is the cool Lukas from the meetup. He was the first brave person to approach me and his reward was to pose half naked for me at Regent's Park. Talk about breaking the ice huh? I did have to roll around in the dirt with him to ease him into my ways :)

I recommend checking his stream out, its just super amazing.

Be sure to check out my Facebook for more photos that wont be shown here on Flickr.

I also wanted to add that Shelby was an inspiration to this edit. Her work on skin contrast had really helped bring the punch in this photo :) thank you!!!

Terézváros.

Architect: Ákos Márton, 1905.

Former Club of Electrical Engineers, see the motifs of the frieze.

Ákos Márton is one of the many Hungarian architects about whom almost nothing is known concerning biographical information. About Ákos Márton currently is not more biographical information available than is to find in the databases of Jewishgen.

Born as Ármin Marton on December 9, 1869 in Pest and later he used the given name Ákos.

Father: Lipót (in one case also called Antal), born in Szent Antalfa. Mother: Rozalia Stiglitz or Stieglitz, born in Boglar or Szőlős, both names be written in the databases.

Ákos married on May 12, 1895 with Gizela Schosberger, Ákos was 26, Gizela 25.

In 1899 he lived on the Kis-Stáció utca 5. (Budapest, VIII. District)

Just as the majority of his collegues was also Ákos Márton of Jewish origin. (Source: Jewishgen)

Ákos Márton (Márton Ákos), must been, given his age, graduated around 1892/1893. Perhaps the first building he designed is that on the Városligeti fasor. Because, according to an official document of the district Terézváros, at that time he would have designed a building: VI. Bajza utca 28 / Benczúr utca 15, and this document provides the information that the property should be built around 1890. It will then probably one of his first designs.

He started as an architect who designed neo-classical buildings. That kind of designs he used during his whole career, but he also designed a number of buildings in a Viennese / Western Art Nouveau style. Later in his career he used again the neo-styles in his designs.

The Old Republic Building is a high-rise building in Chicago. This was the first high-rise in the area east of Michigan Avenue between the river and Grant Park, and when it was built it enjoyed high visibility.

Its construction finished on 1925 and was designed by Vitzhum and Burns. When it was constructed, at just 24 stories, it was considered a classic skyscraper in every sense of the word. Its height, style, and location demonstrated all of the attributes that when put together make a great skyscraper at the time.

Located on the northeast corner of North Michigan Avenue and East South Water Street, the Old Republic Building was one of the first tall buildings, along with the London Guarantee Building, to be constructed south of the Chicago River on North Michigan Avenue after its widening in the early 1920s. The building exemplifies the city’s efforts to encourage commercial development on the avenue as a result of major improvements brought about by Burnham and Bennett’s 1909 Plan of Chicago. The construction of the Michigan Avenue Bridge, the widening of the avenue and the construction of the bi-level roadway at South Water Street and Wacker Drive in the 20th century changed the face of Michigan Avenue in particular, and the downtown in general.

One thing that caughts ones attentions is the "Betsy Ross" 13-star US Flag outside the building, which was one of the biggest symbols of the American Revolution.

When the breezes calm down and there's no boat traffic on the Willamette River the water get's smooth enough to see the underwater portion of the Ross Island Bridge Cyclotron and Linear Accelerator, see notes.

Most particle accelerators are horizontal structures on top of or under ground serving only one purpose. But OSU realized that their design could also easily double as a bridge for city traffic, and thus the city was able to get this nice bridge for just half the price it would have paid otherwise. Based on the Ross Island success and needing a linear accelerator capable of handling light rail sized particles a new Linear Accelerator Bridge OSU/city collaboration is currently under construction just down river from here. As always, thanks for stopping by and looking. I appreciate your comments and visits.

Get Pushed: I was paired with PKcam for R25. Her push was:

Because your shots of others are so intriguing, I'm going to use that as part of the challenge. We all go through struggles, high moments, low moments, etc. The only constant is change. For you I would like you to convey where you are in your life right now (whether it is how you are feeling on the day you are shooting, or a frame of mind you've been in for a particular period of time up until now) by recognizing it in others and capturing it for the viewer. Perhaps this could be seen as an abstract self portrait. If you would like to do it as a diptych or triptych that is okay as well.

This was both difficult and intriguing. Above is the result. I have been away from home for a long time - almost a year. I returned a week ago. I should be happy. I won't explain more than that; the shot should stand on its own. But I am interested in what people think the feeling is - so by extension how successful I was in capturing it.
