Mont Blanc (French) or Monte Bianco (Italian), meaning "White Mountain", is the highest mountain in the Alps, Western Europe and the European Union. It rises 4,810.45 m (15,782 ft)[2] above sea level and is ranked 11th in the world in topographic prominence. It is also sometimes known as La Dame blanche (French for "the White Lady") or Il Bianco (Italian for "the White One").

The mountain lies between the regions of Aosta Valley, Italy, and Haute-Savoie, France and the location of the summit is on the watershed line between the valleys of Ferret and Veny in Italy and the Arve Valley in France.

The two most famous towns near Mont Blanc are Courmayeur in Aosta Valley, Italy, and Chamonix in Haute-Savoie, France—the site of the first Winter Olympics. A cable car ascends and crosses the mountain from Courmayeur to Chamonix.

Begun in 1957 and completed in 1965, the 11.6 km (7¼ mi) Mont Blanc Tunnel runs beneath the mountain between these two countries and is one of the major trans-Alpine transport routes.

The Mont Blanc massif is popular for mountaineering, hiking, skiing and snowboarding.

The summit of Mont Blanc is a thick, perennial ice and snow dome whose thickness varies, so no exact and permanent summit elevation can be determined. But accurate measurements have been made. For a long time its official elevation was 4,807 m (15,771 ft). Then in 2002, the IGN and expert surveyors, with the aid of GPS technology, measured it to be 4,810.40 m (15,782 ft 2 in).

Courmayeur is an Italian town and comune in the autonomous region of Aosta Valley, in northern Italy. It is located at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in western Europe, in the Graian Alps range, and is crossed by the Dora Baltea. Courmayeur shares the summit of Mont Blanc with its neighboring commune of Chamonix in France, and owns the title of highest commune in Italy.

A wonderful weekend to you all! I hope you have the opportunity to hand around like these three guys.

I've been back from vietnam for more than a months - I didn't touch my camera ever since. This morning I had the feeling to grap it for the first time after the trip. It's itching again even though it is insanely cold around here. I can't wait to work on something new during the next weeks.

Brand spanking new, and a snip at £360 - this is the Vulcan Demonstration Van. Its chassis could take 20-25 cwt., and it was distributed by B.T. Lambert Ltd., 3 Cornmarket, Dublin.

From examining shots of the van from other angles, what we thought was the reg. no. seemed to be 0010 YI (definitely YI, but 0010 didn't sound right). Thanks to Bob Montgomery 2012 who explained that it was a trade plate rather than a registration plate...

I've transcribed the full text from the carving over the door of Reginald's Tower behind the van below...

This is the more traditional view of Saint Louis Cathedral. It was rainy off and on all day and I thought the clouds rolling in were cool. It kept this from being TOO much of a generic post card shot. The island drifts amongst the snow-capped mountains surrounding the Lake Maggiore.

Isola Bella, meaning "Beautiful Island", really does live up to its name. It is one of the Borromean Islands (Isole Borromee) of the Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. Until the beginning of 1600s, the island was a small rocky cliff occupied by a tiny fishing village. In 1632 Carlo III of the influential House of Borromeo began the construction of a palazzo with luxuriant baroque gardens dedicated to his wife Isabella, from whom the island takes its name.

Tante donne.

The Historic Columbia River Highway is an approximately 75-mile (120 km) scenic highway in the U.S. state of Oregon between Troutdale and The Dalles, built through the Columbia River Gorge between 1913 and 1922. As the first planned scenic roadway in the United States, it has been recognized in numerous ways, including a listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark, designation as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers, and considered a "destination unto itself"] as an All-American Road by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. The historic roadway was bypassed in by the present Columbia River Highway No. 2 (Interstate 84) from the 1930s to the 1950s, leaving behind the old two-lane road. The road is now mostly owned and maintained by the state through the Oregon Department of Transportation as the Historic Columbia River Highway No. 100 (still partially marked as U.S. Route 30; see Oregon highways and routes) or the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department as the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail.

Rhodes(Greek: Ρόδος, Ródos, IPA: [ˈro̞ðo̞s]; Italian: Rodi; Ottoman Turkish: ردوس Rodos; Ladino: Rodi or Rodes) is a Greek island approximately 18 kilometers (11 mi) southwest of Turkey in eastern Aegean Sea. It is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of both land area and population, with a population of 117,007[2] of which 53,709 resided in the homonymous capital city of the island.

Historically, Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. Today Rhodes is a tourist destination.

The island of Rhodes is shaped like a spearhead, 79.7 km (49.5 mi) long and 38 km (24 mi) wide, with a total area of approximately 1,400 square kilometers (541 sq mi) and a coastline of approximately 220 km (137 mi). The city of Rhodes is located at the northern tip of the island, as well as the site of the ancient and modern commercial harbors.

In the 1st century AD, the Emperor Tiberius spent a brief term of exile on Rhodes, and Saint Paul brought Christianity to the island. Rhodes reached her zenith in the third century, and was then by common consent the most civilized and beautiful city in Hellas. In 395, the long Byzantine Empire period began for Rhodes, when the Roman Empire was split and the eastern half gradually became a Greek empire. Although part of Byzantium for the next thousand years, Rhodes was nevertheless repeatedly attacked by various forces. It was first occupied by Muslim forces of Muawiyah I in 672. Much later, Rhodes was retrieved for the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus during the First Crusade.

In 1309 the Byzantine era came to an end when the island was occupied by forces of the Knights Hospitaller. Under the rule of the newly named "Knights of Rhodes", the city was rebuilt into a model of the European medieval ideal. Many of the city's famous monuments, including the Palace of the Grand Master, were built during this period.

The strong walls which the Knights had built withstood the attacks of the Sultan of Egypt in 1444, and of Mehmed II in 1480. Ultimately, however, Rhodes fell to the large army of Suleiman the Magnificent in December 1522, long after the rest of the Byzantine empire had been lost. The few surviving Knights were permitted to retire to the Kingdom of Sicily. The Knights would later move their base of operations to Malta. The island was thereafter a possession of the Ottoman Empire for nearly four centuries.

While on a photowalk around Westminster with Siany, we walk around the back of Westminster Abbey and she found this little entrance. We wandered in and found this fantastic little cloister and many other churchy-type things. We also found the oldest door in England, dating back to around 1050.

The interior of this, I believe it's called a chapter house, is modelled on the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. I loved the sense of perspective that this corridor gave, plus the wonderful ceiling and the bright sunlight shining in through the cloister windows.

This looks much more lovely large on black. I've also just realised that my Flickr stream has just passed over a million views, so thank you everyone who as visited and continues to visit my photos!

At the Hintertux Glacier Austria's only all-year-round ski resort you hit the heights: Ski runs as far as you can see and fantastic panoramic views from the dolomites to the Zugspitze, Worldcup-Halfpipe, Funpark and beautiful sunterraces. A fascinating spectacle of nature and sports, guaranteed to arouse indescribable feelings in every skier, carver, snowboarder, tourist, hiker or sunbather. The glaciers are accessed by gondola and chair lifts and are used as a glacier skiing region all year round. At its highest point the ski region reaches a height of 3,250 m in the saddle between the peaks of the Gefrorene-Wand-Spitzen.Three large gondola lifts have been built: the so-called glacier buses Gletscherbusse where the gondolas are suspended on two steel cables and are able to carry 24 people each. The Gletscherbus 3 is the highest cable car system using two cables in the world. In all there are 18 lifts to transport winter sports tourist and other visitors from the Hintertux valley station up to the glacier.

Photo taken at the Hintertux Glacier - Austria's only all-year-round ski resort. Here you hit the heights: In summer 18 km of slopes and up to 9 lifts are operated in Austria's most beautiful all-year-round ski resort. Let the eye escape across the shimmering slopes of the pristine Dolmites and reach up far into the Zugspitze. Never will you feel so lucky to be alive! This place has it all and it will be sure to take you back down to earth - in the most thrilling way!
