- www.kevin-palmer.com - The milky way is so big that sometimes even your widest lens can't capture it. This is a stitch of 3 images shot with a Pentax K-5 and Bower 14mm f2.8 lens. This night was a bit chilly for mid-May with temperatures in the 30's. But it was perfectly clear with very transparent skies. The brightest parts of the galaxy were clearly reflected in the still water of Spring Lake. I don't think conditions get any better around here for astrophotography. Next month I plan to seek out even darker skies where there is no pesky band of light pollution at the horizon. For a closer look at the bright portion of the milky way, go to the previous image.

The weather changes are dramatic.
Windy April is hardly a spring that the locals head out to enjoy.
July however is a lively month, though humid, with overflowing patios, packed pubs and parks filled with locals who enjoy the warm weather along the lake shore late into the night.
The action of the Helvara rifle is totally unlike other bolt action rifles. The action is locked by a locking block dropping into recesses in the receiver; when the bolt carrier is pulled back, a wedge pulls the locking block up and out of these recesses. The trigger is a two-stage design which wraps around the sear.

Grassington is a market town and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the town is situated in Wharfedale around 9 miles (14 km) from Bolton Abbey and is surrounded by limestone scenery. Nearby villages include Linton, Threshfield, Hebden, Conistone and Kilnsey. The Domesday Book lists Grassington as part of the estate of Gamal Barn including 7 carucates of ploughland (840 acres/350ha) including Grassington, Linton and Threshfield. The Norman conquest of England made it part of the lands of Gilbert Tison. But by 1118 Tison had suffered a demotion and his lands returned to the king then given to Lord Percy. Grassington was historically a township in the parish of Linton in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It became a separate civil parish in 1866, and was transferred to North Yorkshire in 1974. Although often described by local people as a village, Grassington was granted a Royal Charter for a market and fair in 1282 giving it market town status. The market was held regularly until about 1860. A change in land use from the early 17th century, when lead mining began to assume more importance, brought some prosperity, but Grassington's heyday arrived during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The opening of the Yorkshire Dales Railway to Threshfield in 1901 brought new visitors, many of whom settled, some finding work in Skipton or in the developing limestone quarries. The Old Hall at Grassington is reputedly the oldest house in Yorkshire, dating from the late 13th or early 14th century. Today Grassington is the main residential and tourist centre in Upper Wharfedale Centred around its small cobbled square is a selection of shops, pubs and the village museum, offering food, clothing and gifts, alongside small cafes, restaurants and hotels. Grassington Folk Museum houses a collection which tells the story of Wharfedale. It is an independent museum, run and managed by volunteers. Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association is a voluntary mountain rescue organisation, located in Grassington, which rescues people in trouble from the surrounding fells and caves. Grassington Festival is a two-week long annual event encompassing music, performance and visual arts, held in a variety of venues around the village. In 2008 it included acts by Jo Brand, Dara Ó Briain, Clare Teal and Toyah Willcox. Every September since 2011, Grassington plays host to a 1940's themed weekend. Events include war re-enactments, dances as well as a variety of military and civilian vehicles on display from the period. In the winter Grassington also hosts the very popular Dickensian Festival when the entire village is taken over by Dickensian costumes and Christmas activities and opportunities to purchase Christmas presents. A Yorkshire Dales National Park information centre is on Hebden Road. Three miles north of Grassington at Kilnsey is the glacially carved overhang of Kilnsey Crag. Grass Wood, a large area of ancient woodland including the Iron-Age fort, Fort Gregory (also known as Gregory's Fort), is situated just over one mile north-west of Grassington.
A dolmen (also known as cromlech, anta, Hünengrab, Hunebed, Goindol, quoit, and portal dolmen) is a type of single-chamber megalithic tomb, usually consisting of three or more upright stones supporting a large flat horizontal capstone (table). Most date from the early Neolithic period (4000 to 3000 BC). Dolmens were usually covered with earth or smaller stones to form a barrow, though in many cases that covering has weathered away, leaving only the stone "skeleton" of the burial mound intact.

Panther Beach North: Mission Panorama and Coastal Obsession Collide
Although it has been a very dry winter here along the central California coast, we did get hit by some heavy rain over the weekend. Friday afternoon, before the rain really hit hard, I posted a panorama from a point overlooking the stretch of coast known as Panther Beach and Hole In The Wall Beach, entitled "Coastal Obsession". As the worst of the rain subsided on Monday night, I went out and shot another panorama entitled "Coastal Obsession Part II: Mission Panorama".
This morning I got up at 5am, headed up the coast, hoping to scout out how my recent shooting grounds would work for sunrise. You see, Aaron Reed, a contact of mine, is road tripping to Cali, and we may hook up for a sunrise shoot. Wanting to look like I know what I'm doing, I figured I should do some research first...and why not head to where I know there are some nice spots.
Well, the newly running creek at Panther Beach had eroded the beach even more than just a couple days ago. Of course, I left my wading boots in truck, and the only way to proceed was to head up the trail, get the boots, and head back down. Once across the creek, I could finally determine that the mix of high tide and swell wasn't going to allow me through the hole in the wall. I considered shooting the hole with water rushing through, but instead, headed up to the bluff directly above it. My recent itch for panoramas got the best of me.
Not the best sunrise, but I enjoyed the setting of the waning crescent moon and then the rising sun.

My Most Popular Images from 2012
I have never done one of these before but thought I would give it ago and reflect back on 2012. These are my most interesting images (according to Flickr) from 2012 and all of them are taken in London and mostly on the Tube, which is no surprise there :-).
I would just like to take the time to thank all of those who visit and comment on my work regularly. It really does help me alot to improve my photography and my techniques. I feel compared to previous years I am a little bit more planned in the way I do photography which I feel has vastly helped. I have also achieved more than I previously thought compared to this time last year, I have got a couple of images published in a magazine, now a Getty contributor and only recently got round to setting up my own website
