A zig-zag, double cut string oak stair with a frameless, toughened and laminated glass balustrade.
All the fixings and construction parts have been hidden beneath secret panels to give a clean and uncluttered look.
Why take the freeway, the fastest, shortest way to your final destination? Make sure you meander through Life, taking in all the experiences, the highs, the lows and take the maximum time you can to get to those pearly gates.
Edale is a bit like that with its little road that zigzags up and down through a beautiful valley.
Today, 6th January, whilst it is a public holiday in Europe, is apparently the most depressing day of the year. Set out to enjoy it!
- an old farm fence, built from American Chestnut wood. Sadly those trees are now almost completely gone, perished from an "imported" blight in the late 1800s. This fence is a good demonstration of how rot resistant this wood was...

This is the beginning of a zigzag quilt I started for myself. The zigzags fit just on top of the twin sized bed in my spare bedroom. So now I have to start adding borders to get it up to size. It is made with the set of fat quarters I won from SewMamaSew! earlier this year.
The tutorial for this no-triangles zigzag quilt is here: beesquarefabrics.blogspot.com/2009/03/how-to-make-zig-zag...
Just those stairs and escalators in that tunnel were already worth going there, in terms of photography :)
These should be the same stairs like the ones on this picture, just seen from the other end.
This is entrelac using zig-zag shaped units rather than squares.

I had precious little time to take shots at Georgia Tech today, but I got a couple of the amazing Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons. One of the most beautiful and functional academic buildings I've ever seen! More info: clough.gatech.edu/

My first completed quilt (note - definitely not the first quilt I've started!). I used Crazymomquilt's zigzag pattern and Oh Fransson's binding tutorial - both absolutely fabulous!
The amazing engineering feat known as the Zigzag Railway was completed in 1869. A zigzag was seen as the only way to progress trains down the Blue Mountains escarpment to the town of Lithgow. It cost £20,000 to £25,000 per mile to build the zigzag. Three gorges along the way were spanned by viaducts. Parts of the rock face are pierced with tunnels. The zigzag has a gradient of 1 in 42 and the fall from Clarence to the bottom of the zigzag is 210 metres (687 feet) over a length of 8,000 metres or 5 miles. The elevation of Clarence is 1,115 metres (3,658 feet) and at the bottom of the zigzag the elevation is 906 metres (2,971 feet). There are two reversing stations on the descent.
Although one of the great engineer feats of Australia the zigzag railway impeded rail traffic to the west as it was slow and a cumbersome passage down the rock escarpment. It limited the size of the steam engines. In 1910 a new line was constructed, which is still known as the ten tunnel deviation, to bring the rail traffic down to the lower level. The Indian Pacific train still uses this route between Lithgow and Mt Victoria in the Blue Mountains. This new line was electrified in 1957. The zigzag lay forgotten until 1975 when it was restored for use as a tourist train. The narrow gauge steam engines used on the track come from Queensland.
