Identifying asters is always tricky, so it helps to have a botanist who can key these out! This plant did not have a label, but our tour guide at the Daniel Boone Native Gardens claimed it was a Zigzag Aster (Symphyotrichum prenanthoides). It is native to the eastern US with its southern-most populations in North Carolina and Tennessee. It is listed as a threatened species in Canada and some New England states.
