La Belle-Dame ou Vanesse du chardon (Vanessa cardui) est une espèce de lépidoptères de la famille des Nymphalidae.
La Belle-Dame est un papillon de taille moyenne à grande, il mesure entre 40 mm et 70 millimètres d’envergure.
La Belle-Dame est le papillon à l'aire de distribution la plus large au monde, elle peut être observée sur tous les continents à l'exception de l'Antarctique.
C'est une espèce migratrice, elle est considérée, parmi les papillons, comme le plus grand migrateur connu.
On peut voir la Belle-Dame durant les étés chauds.
Sous nos latitudes, l’été n'est pas toujours en phase avec la saison, ce qui fait que la présence de ce papillon est parfois limité, voir quasi inexistante certaines années.
Les années de canicule, la population de ce papillon peut être record.
Ce papillon possède les qualités d’un athlète de très haut niveau.
Son vol rapide et zigzagant peut atteindre 30 km/h.
Il est capable d’adopter des trajectoires les plus incroyables pour échapper à ses principaux prédateurs, même les oiseaux insectivores.
En plus de ses qualités de pilote, il est également très endurant car il parcourt des milliers de kilomètres.
Les papillons en migration, se déplaçant par groupe de quatre ou cinq, peuvent couvrir près de 500 kilomètres en un jour, ne faisant que de rares pauses pour se nourrir, généralement sur les fleurs de chardon.
La Belle-Dame occupe des habitats très diversifiés, des déserts aux plaines et aux forêts denses.
On l’observe fréquemment dans les terrains vagues, sur le bord des routes, et les endroits où les chardons abondent.
En effet, c'est un papillon qui a une nette préférence pour les fleurs de chardon ce qui lui vaut son nom de Vanesse du Chardon, mais il peut aussi se nourrir sur d'autres plantes, les fleurs de trèfle et de luzerne entre-autre.
La chenille de la Belle-Dame est polyphage.
On dénombre plus de 100 plantes hôtes, dont la grande ortie, le chardon, la mauve sauvage, l’artichaut, la lavande, le tussilage, la bardane, les tournesols, la bourrache, le Plantain, les cirses... etc.

At the peak of Perseid meteor shower, I capture this weird meteor trail. If you look carefully, you can see the meteor change its direction ten times and become brighter and bigger in the end.In my experience, this kind of meteor is really rare, about one in a hundred I captured. After search on the internet, I realize that a this meteor may be a flat stone with uneven surface would following this zigzag path or even spiral because of air friction.
I am wondering that does anyone observe this kind of meteor before?

That line, is that of an old Chinese saying, "上有天堂, 下有苏杭" (Shang you tian tang, xia you su hang). Marco Polo, the first Westerner to visit Hangzhou, later wrote that it was the most magnificent and beautiful city in the world. And indeed, it is truly a beautiful place with a beautiful setting.
When I see a photo like this, a sense of calm comes over me. Remembering my visit to West Lake in Hangzhou though, I don't know if calm is the word I would use to describe it. It was, rather pleasant and peaceful to visit though. A number of (primarily Chinese) visitors at the lake that day. Just people wishing to enjoy some of the splendid greenery and water.
It's easy to get wrapped up in the moment, snapping photos and not enjoying the moment for what its worth. Nowadays, I find myself sometimes putting my camera down, and marveling at the scenery and nature for what it is. Something to be imprinted in my mind as a wonderful memory.

Taken from Wilson's Outlook overlooking the Brisbane River at inner northern suburb, New Farm, this shot looks downstream with the redeveloped Evans Deakin shipyards on Kangaroo Point to the right and the Riverwalk along the banks of our beautiful river through New Farm to the left. Below the cliffs is the newly renovated Howard Smith wharf precinct which heads upstream under the Story Bridge, the path linking into very attractive and long distance cycleways either side of the river through both the City and Southbank to West End and Toowong. In the other direction, the walk takes you to New Farm Park, the Powerhouse Entertainment area and along the old wool store precinct of Teneriffe, Newstead House and then, for the first all the way to Hamilton along the newly reconstructed Kingsford Smith Drive to Hamilton. Along the way, take a ferry across to the suburban village at Bulimba and have a coffee and decadent cake if you haven't already entered one of the establishments found along the way. They don't even pay me to say this stuff!
"The Brisbane Riverwalk is one of the best ways to move between two of the city’s most vibrant precincts, whether you’re walking, running or cycling. It links trendy New Farm with the CBD via a suspended path sitting above the water, while offering a beautiful view across the river to Kangaroo Point and a fresh angle of the city.
How to access the Brisbane Riverwalk
Pedestrians and cyclists coming from New Farm can get on to the path at Riverview Court. On the CBD side, the walkway ends at the historic Howard Smith Wharves where it connects to the riverside boardwalk at Boundary Street. The path is part of an uninterrupted riverside route that stretches all the the way to the City Botanic Gardens.
Cycling and walking the Brisbane Riverwalk
Along the Brisbane Riverwalk the cycling and pedestrian pathways are segregated for safety. An opening span of the pathway allows vessels to access the shoreline where it would otherwise be blocked by the walkway.
Brisbane Riverwalk and the 2011 floods
The original floating pathway** washed away when major flooding struck Brisbane in 2011 but reopened in 2014 with a new design built to withstand a one-in-2000-year flood. The first walk, constructed in 2003, was a well-used route and the replacement thoroughfare proved just as popular."
** The original floating walk was great fun to watch as it snaked up and down in the waves created by a passing City Cat ferry. During the floods of 2011, a large section broke away and floated down river where a potential disaster from it hitting the base of the Gateway Bridge was averted by some heroic tug operators who took off after the breakaway and finally stopped it before it got that far. It wasn't the first disastrous flood to hit Brisbane and won't be the last, nor was it the first time a major catastrophe was averted. In the 1974 flood, a large ship that was being completed at the Evans Deakin shipyard mentioned above broke its moorings and threatened to form a weir in the river or worse, also float downstream. That was averted thankfully also.
As a point of interest, in the 1974 flood, the ship that broke away and nearly blocked the river left its moorings on the RHS at Kangaroo Point and in 2011, the original Riverwalk broke its moorings precisely opposite on the LHS.
It's the return of that really "crappy" analog camera I bought at a flea market last summer! As I mentioned after the first test roll, I really wanted to try it out with a 400 iso b/w film next. So that's what I did and you'll see most of the results in the upcoming days!
Some of the shots got weird stripes on them, which could either come from a small strip of tape I used to fasten the film inside the camera or from the fact that I accidentally leaked some light into the camera at one point.
Taken with a Luminox 356SL analog camera. Ilford HP5 Plus 400 film (about 10 years expired).
