The Majorelle Garden (Arabic: حديقة ماجوريل) is a botanical garden in Marrakech, Morocco. It was designed by the expatriate French artist Jacques Majorelle in 1924, during the colonial period when Morocco was occupied by France. Though Majorelle's art is largely forgotten today -- his oeuvre was made up of gentlemanly orientalist watercolors -- the garden he created is his creative masterpiece. A special shade of bold cobalt blue which he used extensively in the garden and its buildings is named after him, Majorelle bleu.

The garden has been open to the public since 1947. Since 1980 the garden has been owned by Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé.

The garden also houses the Islamic Art Museum of Marrakech, whose collection includes North African textiles from Saint-Laurent's personal collection as well as ceramics, jewelry, and paintings by Majorelle.

Fashion photographer Roxanne Lowit is as much a celebrity as the people she photographs. Now she presents a pictorial history of the great couturier Yves Saint Laurent. Included are intimate views of life backstage at his shows—as Lowit herself experienced it. Whether surrounded by beautiful models or peeking at the catwalk from the wings, every moment was a magnificent photo opportunity. Contributors to the book include Catherine Deneuve, Betty Catroux, and Lucie de la Falaise.

The Majorelle Garden is a botanical garden in Marrakesh, Morocco. It was designed by

the French artist Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962), in 1924, during the colonial period

when Morocco was a protectorate of France. Though Majorelle's orientalist watercolours

are largely forgotten today (many are preserved in the villa's collection) the garden he created is his creative masterpiece. The special shade of bold cobalt blue which he used extensively in the garden and it's buildings is named after him, bleu Majorelle.

The garden has been open to the public since 1947. Since 1980 the garden has been owned by Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé. After Yves Saint-Laurent died in 2008 his ashes were scattered in the Majorelle Garden. The garden also houses the Islamic Art Museum of Marrakesh, whose collection includes North African textiles from Saint-Laurent's personal collection as well as ceramics, jewelry and paintings by Majorelle.

The garden hosts more than 15 bird species, which can be found only in the area of North Africa.

Having visited Marrakech in February, John and I decided to have a sneaky long weekend there while Bethan was on a school Spanish exchange.

The Majorelle Gardens were top of our "must visit" list as we had missed them last time. I was very impressed and loved the colours, the vibrance and also the tranquility compared to the chaos of the Medina and souks.

I'm not sure of the fashion credits for this photo, but the heart enameled bracelet make me think of YSL during this period of the 80's.
