Developing Characters from Observation with Marianna Madriz

From some notes I took. There are a few more. I thought that in the spirit of Halloween I'd post this one up. Happy Halloween!
Kitarō is a yōkai boy born in a cemetery and, aside from his mostly-decayed father, the last living member of the Ghost Tribe (幽霊族, yūrei zoku?). He is missing his left eye, but his hair usually covers the empty socket. He fights for peace between humans and yōkai, which generally involves protecting the former from the wiles of the latter.

AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTION
Presents
YOKAI
Airship 27 Production is thrilled to announce the release of “Yokai.” Space hauler, Captain Tony Michaels and his alien co-pilot/parter, Jiin of Tz-en, crash land on the planet Nihon; a colony world settled by the descendants of Earth’s Japanese people. Then their ship is confiscated and they are arrested for smuggling. When they attempt to resolve the false charges, both of them soon discover they are merely pawns in a deadly political civil war between two rival clans.
And if that wasn’t enough to deal with, they discover the certain colonist have begun having visions of ancient aliens who may have been the first indigenous race to live on Nihon.
Once again, writer Wayne Carey has delivered a colorful, old fashion science-fiction adventure that is filled with action and adventure set in strange and alien worlds. Sci-Fi fans will not be disappointed. This is the second in his series featuring Captain Michaels and Jiin begun in “El-Aris.” Award winning cartoonist Don Simpson provides the wonderful black and white interior illustrations and Canadian artist Ted Hammond the cover.
“I was a huge fan of the early 70s sci-fi paperbacks produced by DAW books,” says Ron Fortier, Airship 27 Managing Editor. “With this series, Carey has recaptured that old world space opera magic made popular by writers like E.C. Tubb, Andre Norton and Jack Vance. Our readers are going to eat this up.”

Related to the Tengu, Taimatsumaru is a giant bird wrapped in demonic flames that really, really hates Buddha. How much, you ask? Although it’s mostly known for attacking and interfering with monks, it even goes so far a to harrass Buddha himself! Now, usually a flaming bird is treated as something positive, whether the Phoenix or the East Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) Vermillion Bird. Clearly, that ain’t the case with this little guy. Mind you, any more info is scarce, as he basically came entirely from Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro, written by Seiken Toriyama in 1784.
