Related to the Tengu, Taimatsumaru is a giant bird wrapped in demonic flames that really, really hates Buddha. How much, you ask? Although it’s mostly known for attacking and interfering with monks, it even goes so far a to harrass Buddha himself! Now, usually a flaming bird is treated as something positive, whether the Phoenix or the East Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) Vermillion Bird. Clearly, that ain’t the case with this little guy. Mind you, any more info is scarce, as he basically came entirely from Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro, written by Seiken Toriyama in 1784.

Yōkai, or Japanese demon, from a scroll. Looking at the name (Yama-warau) literally, it seems as if the name for this yōkai is "laughing mountain" but I wouldn't trust my Japanese translation skills very far...

In Japanese mythology, there is a yōkai (spirit or demon) named Amabie (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amabie). This yōkai helps with harvests and if you show its (hers?) picture to those afflicted with disease, the sick person should get better. Amabie has become very popular since the pandemic started and you can see variations of this image in many places (as well as more modern interpretations).

This image is from the Kyoto University Digital Archive of Rare Materials and the source can be found at rmda.kulib.kyoto-u.ac.jp/item/rb00000122.

Slight color/processing variant.

Akinosuké

One summer afternoon, a man named Akinosuké fell drowsy while chatting with some friends and went to sleep leaning against a tree. He was awakened by a royal procession. The emperor approached, and called to him, asking Akinosuké to marry the princess. Akinosuké, dazzled by the imperial princess's beauty, could do nothing but agree.

The man and the princess were married, and began a long, prosperous life together. They had three sons and four daughters, all of them clever and talented. Even as old age overtook them, surrounded by grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the couple still felt the charm of young love between them. But one day the princess fell ill. Physicians were helpless against the fever, and she died. Akinosuké buried her, building a shrine in her honor.

Suddenly, Akinosuké jolted awake. He was still under the tree with his friends. Astonished by his dream, he recounted it to his companions who looked at each other with wonder. They related to him that, as he fell asleep, a butterfly emerged from his mouth and flew down to a nearby anthill. Ants took the butterfly inside their home. After several minutes, the butterfly climbed from the sand and flew back into Akinosuké's mouth, waking him up. Akinosuké was bewildered and crouched over the anthill, brushing at the sand, exposing the interior. There, within the chambers of the anthill, was a tiny shrine just like the one he had built for his beloved princess.

!!! SPOILER ALERT !!!

Mezuki is our first main quest boss.

Most of the time Mezuki is with Gozuki, another sadistic, abominable Yokai who comes straight out of hell.

Look at this horrible creature. I like this boss design, because it reminds me a little bit on Ludwig from Bloodborne The Old Hunter DLC.

20" x 20" illustration for Kult design agency in Singapore. Its for a book about fears. my assigned fear was Gephydrophobia - (Fear of crossing bridges). Some people with this affliction imagine monsters under the bridges they must cross. I thought this would a great time to illustration some Japanese themed stuff i've been wanting to draw. Seen here is a Suushi Nuppeppo (animated lump of decaying human flesh), a Kijimuna (a forest sprite from Okinawa). All Yokai have crazy stories that are super strange and intersting to me as a westerner, for example the Kijimuna bug-eyed monster on the right, here is an excerpt "a kijimuna may offer to carry a human on it's back as it leaps through the mountains and over the seas. The kijimuna dislike people passing gas on their backs, however, and will immediately throw the human off their backs, no matter where they were at the moment."

An invisible Yokai (except for when he’s represented like this), Nurikabe is a wall. It impedes travellers, making it impossible to move forward. The only way out is to knock on the lower-left portion of Nurikbe, and then he will let you go. As an aside, Shigeru Mizuki swore that he encountered this Yokai once while deployed in World War II he found a patch of jungle that he couldn’t walk through, even though there was no underbrush or foliage int he way. Interesting, that.

Here are my pieces for the Little Monsters show, Million Fishes Gallery, Oct. 31. 2010 in San Franciso. I used mini-munnys, super sculpey, magic sculpt, acrylic sheets, fabric, wood and painted with acrylics.

I'm hoping people will like him enough that I can make more. I had a lot of fun making the flower "plate" on his head and want to make a variety of colors.
