Overcrowding does not only affect people living in overcrowded houses. It affects everyone living in Male'. The increase in number of vehicles is both an environmental and health issue which has not yet been addressed by the government. The increasing number of people with respiratory problems is one of the obvious side-effects which have already become visible. A detailed study of the situation is necessary to determine the dangers posed by overcrowding.

It is time for the government to realize that its past and present policies on urban housing have completely failed. If it is a responsible government, it should change its present polices on housing, identify the reasons for failures (can get a good idea by reading this article) and devise new plans, both short-term and long-term, to address the problem. It is also time for MPs, especially Male' MPs, to raise this issue in the parliament and with the concerned government ministries. We cannot afford another 30 years to find a solution to this extremely important and critical problem affecting the lives of people living in Male'.
