XP2003 and XP2014 lead WT47 through closed Newbridge station bound for Orange then Parkes.

Unlike previous years, the 2022 Elvis Express was combined with the normal Dubbo XPT service (WT27). This year the train operated to Orange along the normal WT27 timetable carrying both Dubbo XPT and Parkes-bound Elvis Express passengers. Beyond Orange, passengers for destinations towards Dubbo completed the remainder of the journey by road coach. Meanwhile, the XPT continued to Parkes as WT49. A similar arrangement was used for the return journey.

This contrasts with previous years where the Parkes bound Elvis Express was operated as a standalone train on a separate path, and the Dubbo XPT service would be replaced by an Xplorer.

Una toma que me costó sacar adelante. Mucha luna que se ocultaba y salía en cielo muy cambiante, una farola tremenda que solo me hacía flares. Todo un suplicio. Pero algo quedó.

Making a fine sight. (even for a couple of chargers) over the Java Trestle which bridges the gap of the Middle Fork Flathead River and Java Creek.

On such a fine April morning in Northern Montana is Amtraks 331 & 319 with the daily Eastbound Empire Builder to Chicago from Portland/Seattle. Slightly more beefed up version of our Armidale/Moree Xplorer....just a smidge.

Friday 7th December 2018

On a quiet Sunday night at the Xplorer/Endeavour Service Centre sits 3 Xplorer sets receiving light maintenance before their trips to the regions the following day. I was there that night to repair a broken mobile phone aboard EC2523 (fuse went kaboom). On each road is the following;

1 Road - EA2506 / EB2513 / EC2526 (ex-NP24 - formed NP23)

2 Road - EA2502 / EB2514* / EB2516* / EC2523 (ex-SP42 - formed WP45)

3 Road - EA2508 / EC2528 (ex-NP2/44 - formed NP2/43) / TE2814 on jacks

Or in fact refurbished.

I know a majority of people don't really care nor keep tabs on these sorts of vehicles. So I'll keep it brief.

In May last year EA2503 had parts of its roof ripped off whilst going under the Coolamon Mainline Loader out in the Riverina whilst working SP42 to Junee. Since then it's been various states at both Auburn Heavy Maintenance Centre and Xplorer Endeavour Service Centre.

Fast forward to last night (9/7/25) EA2503 has just finished its refurbishment / repairs and re-connected to its partner car EC2523 in the Annex Road at Eveleigh, pending a trial run to Lithgow and back as HP95/6 the following day.

At this current point in time LE2860 has been out of service for a year and TE2811 out for 6 months. Thus you may see LE2861 & TE2810 as a pair.

Passing a favourite spot of mine in Breeza, situated on the Liverpool Plains in the states North West is EA2508 & EC2528 with #NP43 passenger service to Moree.

The Xplorer would've started its journey at Sydney Terminal 0929 that morning travelling as an amalgamated five car set to Werris Creek as #NP23. Upon arrival the rear two cars would detach and move to platform two whilst the remaining three cars continue onto Armidale. Passengers can alight from the service whilst the cars are divided up, with a rail museum on the station open when the up and down trains stop. Werris Creek also has a NSW Trainlink Regional Driver depot, regarded as the best one to work at as all jobs pay overnight expenses.

Bit of geological trivia for you as told to me by a local at Curlewis, the Liverpool Plains are unusual in that many steep hills arise suddenly from the plains, you may also note to the right of the frame is the line from Werris Creek. From this vantage point you could probably make out the headlight of a northbound train as it comes out of Gap, named after the gap in the hills, a distance of roughly 11km. Makes it stressful on partly cloudy days watching the shadow on the plain and the train follow it! Also once present just north of the Mooki River bridge was a water tank, erected in March 1879, one would think it used the water from the Mooki River, however long gone nowadays.

It is also speculated that when the new regional fleet enter service that Armidale and Moree will be individual services as the stations along the line cannot hold a nine car train. Though in no way confirmed.

The once-weekly CountryLink Xplorer service from Griffith to Sydney (today formed by Economy Sitting/Luggage car 2527 and First Class/Buffet car 2501) races along at track speed near Marinna, north of Junee. When the train arrives in Goulburn, it will amagalate with SP34, the midday Xplorer service from Canberra to Sydney, to form a 5-car train.

EA2506 leads SP33, the midday Sydney to Canberra Xplorer, through Penrose.

This day out on the Main South was the 'farewell i30 tour' as we took the car out on one final drive and tank of fuel. After 179,000 km of combined ownership covering east coast Australia, we said farewell to the trusty Hoondai i30 “Harry”.
