One of my first attempts at light writing. With a big maglite.

I found this new group yesterday, for people who take macro photos at work ... which has inspired me to do a bit more of that!

29 May 2013. A panel discussion To celebrate the launch of Writing Revolution.

Writing Revolution (I.B.Tauris) is a collection of some of the best new writing born out of the Arab Spring. Bringing together authors, journalists, activists, students, writers and bloggers, it tells the deeply moving and personal stories of these individuals who witnessed and wrote about the revolutions in their countries across the Arab region. From Cairo to Damascus and from Tunisia to Bahrain, Layla Al-Zubaidi and Matthew Cassel have brought together some of the most exciting new writing born out of revolution in the Arab world. This is a remarkable collection of testimony, entirely composed by participants in, and witnesses to, the profound changes shaking their region.

Purchased by MAC in Turkey at their airport. Montblanc was about to close the boutique for renovations to bring it in line for corporate consistancy so they had actually reduced a few of their items by 25%.

MAC believes that this writing instrument pays homage to Coco Chanel due to its elegant black design and the fact that her middle name was Bonheur. I agree with her guess.

I've signed up for the Open University's Creative Writing course (A215). It doesn't start for a few weeks, but I'm trying to get ahead on the freewriting activities.

Today was sunny first thing so I had breakfast outside and did some writing.

Ghost in Denver Colorado.

Looks like a ghost on a ghost. The top says Mission, I don't think that is related to the A. B. Powers Writing Inks. I might consult the library on this one.

South Africa: Ithuba Writing Project .

South African schoolchildren are enjoying more than 2.3 million books written in their home languages to advance literacy for learners in grades 4 to 6.

The learning materials were authored and illustrated by 140 South African educators trained by USAID-sponsored experts in response to the South African Department of Education’s request to improve learners’ reading and writing skills. The Ithuba Writing Project partnership involved the University of Texas at San Antonio collaborating with South African organizations—READ Educational Trust and The Molteno Project, supported by the Universities of Pretoria and Limpopo. The content relates to children’s daily lives and covers three learning areas: Life Orientation, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, written in all 11 official South African languages.

Paper: G. Lalo "Paille" 120g, ivory with inclusions.

Writing begins with planning and can end with publishing, but the area in between is messy and different from writer to writer.

Teachers should not impose the writing process on students but rather ask that students develop an awareness of their process and be able to speak to it.

No photoshop, just cropping.

The spider species Argiope aurantia is commonly known as the black and yellow garden spider, writing spider, or corn spider. It is common to the contiguous United States, Hawaii, southern Canada, Mexico, and Central America. They have distinctive yellow and black markings on their abdomens and a mostly white cephalothorax. The etymology of its name means "gilded silver-face". Males range from 5–9 mm (0.20–0.35 in) females from 19–28 mm (0.75–1.1 in). Like other members of Argiope they are considered harmless to humans.

The web of the yellow garden spider is distinctive: a circular shape up to 2 feet (60 cm) in diameter, with a dense zigzag of silk, known as a stabilimentum, in the center. The purpose of the stabilimentum is disputed. It is possible that it acts as camouflage for the spider lurking in the web's center, but it may also attract insect prey, or even warn birds of the presence of the otherwise difficult-to-see web. Only those spiders that are active during the day construct stabilimenta in their webs.

To construct the web, several radial lines are stretched among four or five anchor points that can be more than three feet apart. The radial lines meet at a central point. The spider makes a frame with several more radial lines and then fills the center with a spiral of silk, leaving a 5/16 to 3/8 inches (8 to 9.5 mm) gap between the spiral rings, starting with the innermost ring and moving outward in a clockwise motion. To ensure that the web is taut, the spider bends the radial lines slightly together while applying the silk spiral. The female's web is substantially larger than the male's, who builds a small zigzag web nearby. The spider occupies the center of the web, usually hanging head-down, waiting for prey to become ensnared in the web. If disturbed by a possible predator, she may drop from the web and hide on the ground nearby. The web normally remains in one location for the entire summer, but spiders can change locations usually early in the season, perhaps to find better protection or better hunting.

The theme for the June 2015 BCD Meeting (British jigsaw association) was Library Puzzles and Interesting Cardboard Jigsaws. I haven't assembled this jigsaw yet and it is the only one from the Studio Library that I've come across. Most of the writing on the box has faded badly. The cut of this jigsaw of Venice, artist G Boucart, looks like that of Chad Valley. When I make up the jigsaw I'll take a better photo of the subscription rates label on the inside of the box.

BCD member Nicki has collected this information:

"Studio Jigsaw Library 1920’s – 1930’s

Box: Brick sized brown card with label giving Puzzle No, size, pieces on top with conditions of lending on inside top of box. 12 month subscription = 1 guinee.

Cut: Used Victory and Chad Valley in own boxes. Interlocking, no colour-line cutting

Example: No A63 242 piece “Venice” by G Boucart. 15.5” x 11.5”

Gaston Boucart (1878-1962) was a French painter, etcher and lithographer. Gaston Hippolyte Ambroise Boucart was born at Angouleme (Charente) and spent all his life in France. He was a pupil of the progressive artist Gustave Moreau- then later Aime Morot, Francois Flameng and Fernand Cormon at the school of fine art in Paris. Boucart specialised in painting architectural subjects, landscapes with animals and urban landscapes. He is especially known for his depictions of country lanes, his well observed interiors and all the waterways and architecture of Venice- a subject he became particularly fond of.

He showed his work at the Salon of French Artists in Paris from 1913 to 1939, and went on to become a member there, receiving an honourable mention in 1928 and a knighthood for his services to art in 1937. His work is represented in the museums of Angouleme and Niort.

There is a great deal of exquisite detail on this desk and visible in the room beyond.

Ghost writing on building located on Pryor Street in Atlanta, Georgia

There my ship already comes

I look from the beach

Writing in the sand has no use for me anymore

Because the letters of your name are not showing in the sand

But the laws of the land do not apply on the open sea

So II will take you there

Grant me my farewell And forgive me for counting all steps

out loud
