You can tell he's a poet because he likes to sleep on my storyboards. Though, I can't blame him. It is, afterall, a very comfy bedsy storyboard.

Galiano Island Books boasts the same ingredients as its larger competitors. With over 25,000 titles, we continue to grow and cater to a wide-range of tastes. However, as a community-minded bookstore, we can never lose sight of our local authors. Our fascination with the high-quality Canadian publications that grow right in our own backyard has led us to “hand-pick” the best titles—and bring them directly to you!

We are hosting our 7th annual Galiano Literary Festival in February 2016. The Festival and number of attendees is growing with each year and we look forward to an even more successful event this year with a fabulous line-up of wonderful authors coming to our lovely island! We decided to host the event in February for a few reasons, not the least of which being that we wanted to attract visitors to the island in an otherwise quiet time – to help provide businesses with a little off-season boost and to help establish Galiano Island as a “year round” rather than “seasonal” destination. The weather has always cooperated and visitors and authors have raved about the island and many have come back to visit.

“More literary festivals ought to be like the one on Galiano. The setting is unequalled. The organizers have everything covered beautifully. I have never seen such a good opportunity for writers and others to schmooze in such a beautiful building. I told Jean that I would give up pie for a year if I get to go there again.” George Bowering

I found this new group yesterday, for people who take macro photos at work ... which has inspired me to do a bit more of that!

29 May 2013. A panel discussion To celebrate the launch of Writing Revolution.

Writing Revolution (I.B.Tauris) is a collection of some of the best new writing born out of the Arab Spring. Bringing together authors, journalists, activists, students, writers and bloggers, it tells the deeply moving and personal stories of these individuals who witnessed and wrote about the revolutions in their countries across the Arab region. From Cairo to Damascus and from Tunisia to Bahrain, Layla Al-Zubaidi and Matthew Cassel have brought together some of the most exciting new writing born out of revolution in the Arab world. This is a remarkable collection of testimony, entirely composed by participants in, and witnesses to, the profound changes shaking their region.

MAC believes that this writing instrument pays homage to Coco Chanel due to its elegant black design and the fact that her middle name was Bonheur. I agree with her guess.

I've signed up for the Open University's Creative Writing course (A215). It doesn't start for a few weeks, but I'm trying to get ahead on the freewriting activities.

Today was sunny first thing so I had breakfast outside and did some writing.

Ghost in Denver Colorado.

Looks like a ghost on a ghost. The top says Mission, I don't think that is related to the A. B. Powers Writing Inks. I might consult the library on this one.

The spider species Argiope aurantia is commonly known as the black and yellow garden spider, writing spider, or corn spider. It is common to the contiguous United States, Hawaii, southern Canada, Mexico, and Central America. They have distinctive yellow and black markings on their abdomens and a mostly white cephalothorax. The etymology of its name means "gilded silver-face". Males range from 5–9 mm (0.20–0.35 in) females from 19–28 mm (0.75–1.1 in). Like other members of Argiope they are considered harmless to humans.

The web of the yellow garden spider is distinctive: a circular shape up to 2 feet (60 cm) in diameter, with a dense zigzag of silk, known as a stabilimentum, in the center. The purpose of the stabilimentum is disputed. It is possible that it acts as camouflage for the spider lurking in the web's center, but it may also attract insect prey, or even warn birds of the presence of the otherwise difficult-to-see web. Only those spiders that are active during the day construct stabilimenta in their webs.

To construct the web, several radial lines are stretched among four or five anchor points that can be more than three feet apart. The radial lines meet at a central point. The spider makes a frame with several more radial lines and then fills the center with a spiral of silk, leaving a 5/16 to 3/8 inches (8 to 9.5 mm) gap between the spiral rings, starting with the innermost ring and moving outward in a clockwise motion. To ensure that the web is taut, the spider bends the radial lines slightly together while applying the silk spiral. The female's web is substantially larger than the male's, who builds a small zigzag web nearby. The spider occupies the center of the web, usually hanging head-down, waiting for prey to become ensnared in the web. If disturbed by a possible predator, she may drop from the web and hide on the ground nearby. The web normally remains in one location for the entire summer, but spiders can change locations usually early in the season, perhaps to find better protection or better hunting.

There my ship already comes

I look from the beach

Writing in the sand has no use for me anymore

Because the letters of your name are not showing in the sand

But the laws of the land do not apply on the open sea

So II will take you there

Grant me my farewell And forgive me for counting all steps

out loud

New York Magazine writes: “Wall is an exciting figure because, to put it bluntly, he hasn’t made the capitulations characteristic of contemporary art. Now the subject of a retrospective organized by Peter Galassi for MoMA and Neal Benezra for SFMoMA (and also the subject of a gallery show at Marian Goodman), Wall, who is 60, seems very much of our moment. Yet he cultivates a living relationship to the great Western tradition, struggles to create rigorous formal compositions, and takes subject matter seriously. All at once.”

Jeff Wall has been the subject of numerous shows, especially of late, presumably because of precisely the characterization of him given by New York Magazine. Recent solo shows of Jeff include: Jeff Wall: Exposure, held at the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin, Germany (2007), Jeff Wall, held at multiple art institutes in the United States, including: The Museum of Modern Art, New York, New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois and the San Francisco Museum of Art, San Francisco, California (2007). In 2005 Wall’s work was the subject of an exhibition at Tate Modern, London, England, as well as the Schaulager Museum, Basel, Switzerland. Both exhibitions showed Jeff Wall, Photographs 1978-2004. In 2004 the Astrup Fearnley Museum, Oslo, Norway, also held a solo show to exhibit Wall’s work.

Along with the prizes listed earlier, Wall has earned the Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award for Art Photography (2001), the Ontario Arts Council, Erna and Victor Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography (2002), the Roswitha Haftmann Prize for the Visual Arts, (2003), and the prize given by the Goteborgs Museum of Art, Gothenburg, Sweden.
