This unit trained at Douglas, going overseas in early 1918. This unit was a component of the 3rd Division, which saw action from early 1918 to the end of the War.

These photos were in a letter writen from the Douglas, Arizona military camp, dated August 28, 1917. The writer was Hayes Wills, who was with the 10th Field Artillery. This unit trained at Douglas, going overseas in early 1918. This unit was a component of the 3rd Division, which saw action from early 1918 to the end of the War.

"Merced" in Spanish means "grace" or "mercy". This word writen on porcelain tiles in the traditional Andalusian style indicates the name of the a street ("Calle de la Merced" in Spanish, which means "Mercy Street" or "Grace Street" in English).

I took the picture in Vejer de la Frontera, a warm and pintoresque village in Andalucía (South of Spain), where following an arab tradition, just like in many other Andalusian places, house walls are all painted in white to fight the extreme heat in the summer months.

The blue sky also has a very characteristic intensity in Andalusia, and I have tried to dramatized that color with high saturation of the image (picture taken 1/2 notch underexposed).
