Created by Gyula Mayr watchmaker in Györ, Hungary, 1909.
The clock displays the time of 65 cities, and shows the days of the week and month, the moon phases.
Master Mayr created a second, more advanced, version of this clock, which is exhibited in Budapest in the Museum of Applied Arts.
Vay Castle, Vaja, Hungary.
Operations image of the week:
On Friday, 13 October, Europe’s Sentinel-5P Earth observation mission will be lofted into space on a Russian rocket from Plesetsk Cosmodrome, with liftoff set for 09:27:30 GMT (11:27:30 CEST).
About 93 minutes later, at around 11:00 GMT, the satellite – having separated from the rocket and opened its solar panels – will transmit its first signals.
The transmission will indicate that all has gone well with the launch and that the satellite is ready to receive instructions.
On Earth, engineers at the ground station in Kiruna, Sweden will be watching intently, with their 15 m-diameter antenna pointing at the horizon, ready to catch Sentinel-5P’s signal as it rises into the sky over the country.
At the same time, 2100 km to the south, the team at ESA’s mission control centre in Darmstadt, Germany, will also be watching closely, because ‘acquisition of signal’ will mark the moment they assume control, sending commands and downlinking data to check on the satellite’s health and status.
The Kiruna station is part of ESA’s global network , and it routinely supports multiple missions such as CryoSat, Integral, the Swarm trio and Sentinel.
It is located at Salmijärvi, 38 km east of Kiruna, in northern Sweden.

Taken on one of the longest days of the year, quite a contrast with today. After today, albeit slowly, the sun will be setting later and later again, having reached it's earliest moment of sinking below the horizon these last couple of days: in Groningen 4:16 PM to be exact.

In my profile, I say that my goal is to shoot better images on purpose than I do by accident. This image met that goal.
This is the moon set of March 8, 2012 (this morning) and I am still trying to get warmed up. The outside temperature was about 22° F when I left the house at 4:45 AM this morning.
This is my first effort at shooting a moonset as a planned event. I would like to thank Royce Bair of IronRodArt for the descriptive information contained within his own lunar images(a). Other links to related information are also provided.
The title of the shot was chosen because, it seems to me, government’s reach continues to grow to the point that it’s shadow is everywhere - even extending to the moon. The building you are looking at is the Utah State Capitol building - an exquisite example of architecture and government’s ability to spend money.

Process:
Nikon D200, 122mm, 5sec, f/11, WB Auto, tripod, mirror lockup, single image, no HDR. EXIR data is UTC zone. Adjustments in Adobe Photoshop include:
a. Crop to 5x7 format
b. Level adjustments and some image sharpening.
The image is part of a five exposure set that was intended for use in a HDR image. But, as I am finding more and more often, HDR is not a solution here for a number of reasons. First, the moon, in a telephoto (122mm), is simply moving too fast and cannot be registered from shot to shot. Photomatix does a poor job because it thinks it is a ghost to be removed. If you turn that feature off, Photomatix just blurs the images together into what I call “moon mush soup.”
In addition, the saturation of the sky is changing almost as fast as the moon moves because of the impending sunrise. HDR does not take kindly to color changes between images.
If you examine the moon closely, you will see it is a bit blurred. The direction of the blur is consistent, I think, with the motion of the moon over the 5 second exposure period. Remember, the moon is moving (about) .004 deg/sec and moves it’s width (1/2 deg) every 2 minutes. My exposure was 5 seconds and, given 20-20 hindsight, should have been no more than one second.

The last time this occurred—a full moon on the solstice—was 1967.
The moment of the fullness of our moon is at 11:02 universal time.
The moment of solstice is June 20 at 22:34 universal time. That's 6:34 p.m. on the East Coast of the Americas, 3:34 p.m. in the West, and 12:34 p.m. in Hawaii.
Here is the time of the solstice where you are.

At 8:41 on Wednesday, July 2nd 2003, the International Olympic Committee in Prague announced that Vancouver was awarded the 21st Olympic Winter Games in 2010. On April 23, 2005, the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic logo was unveiled. The logo is based on the Inukshuk from northern Canada.
Although I now live in Alberta, I grew up in Vancouver and am excited to see the Olympics come to my "home" city. The opening ceremonies begin at 6:00 pm Pacific Standard Time on Friday February 12, 2010 with the theme "To Inspire the World".
We're with you Vancouver - Make us proud! Go Canada Go!

The MOSHI MOSHI BOX Harajuku Tourist Information Center 原宿観光案内所 officially closed its doors in January 2019.
Since opening in 2015, the MOSHI MOSHI BOX (MMB) has always striven to provide tourist information and aid to sightseers in Harajuku, especially foreign visitors to Japan, by offering official multilingual maps from the Shibuya Tourism Association, guidance in multiple languages, foreign money exchange, baggage storage and more. This enabled the MMB to become recognised as a landmark of Harajuku overseas that is used by countless tourists.
Colorful Rebellion, World Time Clock by Sebastian Masuda.
What has attracted remarkable attention at the MMB is the huge World Clock that decorates the outside of the building. Created by Sebastian Masuda, the clock became a popular photo spot amongst tourists in Harajuku. Many people have posted photos of themselves next to the clock on social media, making it become a monument that symbolises Harajuku culture. There have been many calls for the clock to be preserved, though MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON, unfortunately, confirmed that it would be disassembled — though they couldn’t confirm a date. During sunrise and sunset, sunlight is attenuated by a particularly long passage through Earth's atmosphere, and the direct Sun is sometimes faint enough to be viewed directly without discomfort. Hazy conditions, atmospheric dust, and high humidity contribute to this atmospheric attenuation. However, it is still very dangerous to view the Sun with binoculars at such times, as ultraviolet light is much less affected by haze and dust, and so its capacity to damage the retina is not reduced.
