to me is Roz Chast. Honestly. I'd love to own one of her original pieces, but can't sort out how to buy one. I'm sure they're a fortune.
Years ago, maybe 1990 or thereabouts, I was walking through the lower east side with my friend Leon and we passed a tiny tiny gallery. Hanging in the windows were dozens of her cartoons. It was long after I'd fallen in love with her weird and fun take on the world and I went back to look at them at least 10 times. Of course, since that was almost 20 years ago-- the price they were charging, I'm sure, was nothing, but to a sophomore or junior in college with a workstudy job, it seemed completely out of reach.
Anyhow, the point of that story is that I've never wavered in how funny I think Roz Chast is. Oh, and additionally, she was born and raised in Brooklyn and now lives with her family in Connecticut. FAMILIAR, RIGHT?!?!
