Members of Clann na hEireann, the support group of the Workers Party of Ireland in Britain outside the TUC Headquarters in London recently taking signatures for the Stop the Extradition of Sean Garland campaign.

 

Sean Garland is a former President of the Workers Party of Ireland. In late 2008 the outgoing US government of George W. Bush issued a warrant for his extradition to the US on trumped up charges (which have yet to be produced in court) - the extradition papers were signed personally by Condoleezza Rice in what was clearly a political act.

Tadhg Barry was a local socialist republican and trade union activist. He was shot dead at Ballykinlar internment camp in Co. Down in November 1921.

Des O'Hagan signs Letters from Long Kesh for Joe Dowds

The death occurred on 1st April 2009 of longtime Workers' Party member Bernard Cunningham, Drumgeeny, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan.

 

Bernard died, aged 64, at Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda after a battle with cancer. He is seen above greeting Comrade Mafalda Guerrera of the Portuguese Communist Party at the Workers Party Ard Fheis in Liberty Hall, Dublin in April 2008.

 

Bernard was buried in Kilanny Cemetery near his home on April 4th. The funeral was attended by a large number of local people and there was a good turnout of Workers Party members including former Party President Sean Garland, General Secretary John Lowry and Ard Comhairle members Peter Short (Dundalk) and John Jefferies (Cork)
