Beijing, due to the Olympics next year, is being rebuilt at an unbelievable pace. The construction duties are falling squarely on the shoulders of construction workers being brought in from the provinces. Often mis-treated and underpaid they're responsible for the biggest urban facelift in modern history. This guy is a welder.

Washington State Department of Transportation workers perform a semiannual inspection of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, due to be torn down in 2012. The viaduct, built in 1953, carries 100.000 vehicles a day. The 2001 Nisqually earthquake damaged the viaduct and shook and seawall. It is said that another earthquake of the same scale would possibly take the viaduct down, making it a great public hazard. The whole issue is very controversial. On one side there are people who propose that it be repaired. The DOT claims that the viaduct is in such a bad shape that the only way to repair it would be to rebuild it. Which is something many oppose, promarily real estate developers who see the opportunity to develop the area the viaduct occupies. The final solution is yet to be determined. What is known is that the work to take down the viaduct on central waterfornt is beginning in 2012.

Walmart employees picket outside of the Walmart store on Crenshaw Blvd in Los Angeles California on Black Friday November 29, 2013. The employees accuse Walmart of continued unlawful retaliation against workers who speak out for change at the company. Some of the striking workers say that when they have come forward to call on Walmart to address issues with scheduling, wages, benefits and above all else, respect in the work place, Walmart has reacted by retaliating against them.

Advocates in Thailand marked the inaugural International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers last month to bring awareness to the discrimination sex workers face and fight for the same legal and cultural protections as other citizens.

AHF Thailand and partner Service Workers In Group (SWING) commemorated the day by screening the documentary “Giant SWING” to highlight how sex workers were excluded from government assistance during COVID-19 lockdowns due to the lack of legal recognition. The screening was followed by a panel where experts discussed changing laws to ensure equal rights.
