The shadows were encroaching, but I couldn't pass up a shot with the ice fishing shanties as a backdrop. Ice fishing is a trademark of a Wisconsin winter but I've only rarely been able to work it into a railroad photo. Duroy Lake is the easternmost of a chain of four lakes that curves around the north side of Phillips and off to the west of town. February 16, 2026.
BCOL C44-9WL #4652 has just come down from Schiller Park and has to throw a switch at Broadview in order to continue onto the Freeport and switch out Hawthorne on the way to the BRC.
Wimpole Hall is a large country house, approximately 8 miles south west of Cambridge. The house was held by the Chicheley family for over 250 years; the last of this family to hold the house was the politician Thomas Chicheley, who was responsible for the "new" house that was completed in 1650. Over the centuries many notable architects have worked on it, including James Gibbs (between 1713 and 1730), Henry Flitcroft (around 1749) and John Soane (1790s), who designed the magnificent Yellow Drawing Room. There are also decorative schemes by the painter James Thornhill (1721).
Dogs - mans best friend? Not on this day, three class 46 slides arrive in the post, hungry (mardy being left on her own) = slides destroyed, one forever, unrecoverable, two to be saved by the wonders of photoshop. Lots of work to do yet, but as BR used to say, we’re getting there..
Cranes haughty, intricate web of iron and steel, stand out their arms to the sky, rippling in the wind ..
A single unit leads a work train consisting of gondolas sits in the siding at Rocky, waiting on BNSF's Provo-Denver to show up. Once meeting the manifest, the work train here will proceed up and in to the siding at Eisele (Clay). The gondolas will be tied down there and the unit will return light back to North Yard.

New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) R52 locomotive no. 80 (GE, 1977) is seen with its work train at W 8th St Station on the BMT Brighton Line. This is one of the most typical work train consists seen in the NYC subway: a locomotive, rider car (converted passenger car used for transporting workers), flat car, and crane car.
Work train 6884 moves slowly east on the UP Geneva Sub as it sets out replacement Concrete Ties along track 1 as a Manifest also moves east on track 2. Work stops as the manifest passes then continues on at a pace of about 1 mph.

Road construction work site on Front Street. These look like rusty streetcar tracks laid out in the middle of the road; not sure what's actually going on.

In the very early 60s, one of my favorite TV shows was Dobie Gillis. I especially loved the the beatnik character, Maynard G. Krebs. To Maynard, 'work' was a dirty word, and whenever he heard the word, he was suprised. His eyes would widen and his voice would go up as he repeated,"WORK?!"
Here's a YouTube clip from this very old series:

Today, my summer vacation is over, and I'm back to work. Or should I say, "Work?"
