An old schoolmate emailed me the other day to tell me her mother had an old tool to give away. She couldn't tell what it was, but that her father used to make toys with it. I went to see it this morning and brought it home. It is a Wizard 14" scroll saw bought many years ago from Western Auto, mounted on a board with a 1/4 HP Emerson Electric motor. I will clean it up and use it in my shop.

My tests on some WIZARD OF OZ theme dioramas.
So, the Lion being fully refreshed, and feeling quite himself again,
they all started upon the journey, greatly enjoying the walk through
the soft, fresh grass; and it was not long before they reached the road
of yellow brick and turned again toward the Emerald City where the
Great Oz dwelt.
The road was smooth and well paved, now, and the country about was
beautiful, so that the travelers rejoiced in leaving the forest far
behind, and with it the many dangers they had met in its gloomy shades.
Once more they could see fences built beside the road; but these were
painted green, and when they came to a small house, in which a farmer
evidently lived, that also was painted green. They passed by several
of these houses during the afternoon, and sometimes people came to the
doors and looked at them as if they would like to ask questions; but no
one came near them nor spoke to them because of the great Lion, of
which they were very much afraid. The people were all dressed in
clothing of a lovely emerald-green color and wore peaked hats like
those of the Munchkins.
"This must be the Land of Oz," said Dorothy, "and we are surely getting
near the Emerald City."

This is my ninth year covering this fun festival filled with color and pageantry and beautiful people. Each year some of the regulars return and sometimes fresh new faces appear to join the renaissance family. Some are vendors or employees, and some customers dress up to fit in with the renaissance festival fun and its 16th century way of life. One big happy family of a few thousand escaping the dull-drums of their daily life for a few hours. This year's crop of new faces was lovely. Hope you enjoy the images. I try to capture their joy. Always fun, festive and very colorful. Thanks very much for looking.

one of my dad's things that i covet the most. i think he traded it with another artists a long time ago. it's a symbol in my brain of my first concept of a wizard.
A few weeks back I was invited by one of the Lost Book creators, Helen Jackson, to submit a cupcake for their competition. The main charachter Aileen vists a cafe in Episode 3 where she will be eating a cupcake. It's a great concept with chapters written in installments as readers chime in and vote on what will happen in the next episode. Learn more about the Lost Book here:
In Chapter 3, we will see Kyle about to depart to Christchurch, NZ. I asked a friend from NZ what Christchurch was known for and she said the Christchurch Wizard who is a local celebrity (if you google him, you will see lots of pictures in which he waers this black wizard hat) and that Christchurch is known for its botanical gardens which is why it is sometimes called Garden City. I frosted the cupcake in blue with red, white and blue stars/sprinkles to represent the NZ flag which has the same colors and the Union Jack with stars. This is a cupcake with a clue!
