Chalkware Wise Men MUSIC BOX !

Fred, my gregarious stepfather, had an odd assortment of acquaintances. Most of them, like Fred, resembled characters from a Damon Runyon story. Bookies, number runners, flexible building inspectors, alcoholic lawyers, a wayward priest, impoverished gamblers, and some small-time wiseguys.

Fred spent his entire working life as a bartender in Harlem, the Bronx, Wall Street, and Long Island; characters came with the territory.

One of these that I remember well was Gustavo Cenci, an Italian-born artist from Umbria. Fred's story is that he used to pass Gus’s studio while driving to one of his jobs outside of the city, and one day he saw that the studio had been destroyed by a fire. He stopped to see if he could be helpful -- very like Fred. And so he met Gus, who had lost everything in the conflagration. Fred came home that night and packed a bag of his clothes to bring to Gus. I remember that.

Soon Gus got back on his feet, especially since he had found a new patron -- Fred. The painting you see behind my sisters in this photo is an original Gustavo Cenci. It depicts Capri. I remember when Fred and Gus brought it to the house. We had only one wall large enough to display such a substantial painting. I always thought it would have looked better in a good-sized Italian restaurant rather than in our cramped living room. However, a huge oil painting was something you didn’t see in anyone else’s apartment -- at least not in the Bronx.

Soon Gus came to our house to paint frescoes on the ceilings and walls. Fred, reminiscent of the Renaissance Popes, had commissioned Gus to turn our apartment into a work of art. Unfortunately, there was not much wall space for frescoes, and the ceilings were too low to attempt anything truly monumental. And worse still, with “Capri” taking up the living room, Gus had to limit himself to our modest kitchen.

I remember holding the ladder steady as he worked. He must have been in his 70’s, but he worked with great energy. He festooned the walls with vines, clusters of grapes, and, for some unknown reason, parrots. I was reminded of some of our kitchen motifs when many years later I visited Pompeii.

Again, something you didn’t see every day -- at least not in the Bronx.

Gus was then commissioned to paint a large portrait of my mother. That painting now hangs above the fireplace in what is called the "great room" (apparently a common term in contemporary American parlance) in my sister’s house in Connecticut. Gus would be pleased.

I’m not sure what happened to “Capri.” Surprisingly, my mother decided, only after a relatively short time, that the kitchen was getting dingy and she painted over the parrots.

I wonder if I should contact the present owners and tell them that they have, under just a few layers of paint, a room frescoed by Gustavo Cenci.

Gus, apparently, had painted futuristic art-deco murals for the Works Progress Administration in the Thirties. But when I was brought to his studio in the Sixties -- to keep my mother company during a sitting -- all I remember were paintings of Italy.

Perhaps his early work had been destroyed by the fire, or, like many first generation Italian immigrants, he had in old age grown deeply nostalgic for his homeland.

And then, of course, there were the patrons to consider, Fred, for example.

Ok, which one of you wiseguys picked Pickles to photograph for today's challenge??? I have a dog you know! It was a disaster from the moment I started. I propped Mr Pickles up, told him to smile, looked through the view finder of my camera and saw nothing but Teeth and Fur! I jumped back just in time to see a giant Hairball dash out of the kitchen with Mr Pickles dangling out of the left side of a snout that mysteriously smelled like cat poop. I made chase and the dog ran faster. Then he flew into the bedroom and slid butt first under the bed as if he was sliding into Home Plate.

As the dog chewed Mr Pickles, my mind raced with how to save him. Finally, I got it. I ran back to the kitchen, opened the fridge, grabbed what I needed, then ran back to the bedroom. And with an apology to Mr Carrot, I chucked him under the bed where Inde quickly dropped what was left of Mr Pickles and ... well, it wasn't pretty. Mr Carrot is kind of everywhere now.

And after all that, your dang right I'm gonna photograph Mr Pickles and put it up no matter how gruesome it is.

View saying some nice words about Mr Pickles.

oh yeah, say something about whats it's name too. you know, that orangey thing that's kind of everywhere now.

Our Daily Challenge: Pickle

Unknown to this fisherman displaying his prize catch of the day, a wiseguy is photobombing him. Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

When I was a kid, the undisputed king of Saturday morning cartoons wasn't the mouse and his pals we all love today...it was a smart-alec wiseguy rabbit we all know so well, but seems forgotten today...I can remember those cartoons word for word, prank for prank...I am talking of course about the amazing Bugs Bunny...

My kids will tell you that whenever I see a piano, I am likely to say in my best Bugs Bunny voice, "Have you got a pi-anna?" It is a quote, a memory, a ridiculous bit of dialog that has remained with me in my head for decades, triggered instantly by the sight of a piano....If you are lucky, you might hear my Yosemite Sam impression continuing the silliness, with the next line from the cartoon, haha!

To understand where the line comes from, please be my guest and have a peek at this You Tube clip:

Ok, so how about this photo?

My son Justin and I were wandering around the lobby of the Grand Californian Hotel at Disneyland Resort, looking for some inspiring scenes that needed an HDR treatment. Turning the corner on the 3rd floor of the mezzanine/balcony surrounding the Lobby, we found this little Piano Lounge on the same level as the massive chandeliers that illuminate the busy hotel center below. The architecture here is a clever combination of rustic and modern with huge arching beams and Tiffany lamps. I originally shot this in a horizontal format, but realized afterward that vertical was the way to go so as to include the chandelier above, and to accentuate the vanishing point of the beams ans chandeliers in the next room. This image is from five exposures processed once using Photomatix's Tonemapping feature, and again using Photomatix's Exposure Fusion, with he two resulting HDR images combined in Photoshop using the best of each layer-masked together. The individual exposures were also used in layers to control light and color issues.

The day after this photo was taken, Justin was attending a Mice Chat Anniversary Meetup at DLR that featured fun games and challenges for the participants. One of the challenges was a photo quiz that required the identification of a non Disney California Adventures subject. One of the photos was a closeup of the lovely flower pattern in the carpet seen here under the piano that Justin instantly recalled from the night before, and immediately identified the carpet as the outlaw photo. Justin's group won the challenge!

Guess he picked the right team. Tough Loss for the Pats. Great Superbowl. One of his students got him this LeSean McCoy jersey so he threw it on to be a wise guy. My sister wanted a family Superbowl picture last Sunday afternoon. Sis and bro are fake pissed. Mom is supervising. Brother-In-Law is loving it!
