I went to line dance class before working out with my trainer at the VCC. I was very happy that the weather cooperated, and we were able to have water aerobics, and I had a swim lesson. This was only the 3rd lesson that we've been able to get in for the whole summer. Either Laura or I was out of town or had an appointment or the weather was stormy.

Installing the RM-E10 remote, as you can see it was a close fit. I soldered the wires from the E10 directly to pins 1 and 2 of the grips button. This makes the NEX fire when I do a half press, not my favorite, but it wouldn't work other ways that I tried. When I had it set for full press, it would cause my Alpha bodies to fire on half press, this was because the E10 was adding a resistance across the pins that was low enough to cause my Alphas to fire. So I had to do it this way to make the grip work with both NEX and Alpha.

You can also sort of see how I taped the battery for the E10 directly onto it. I will have to take the grip apart to replace the battery, but that should only be every couple years, they last a long time in my experience.

This is how I use any other wireless flash system with the built-in Sony wireless flash system.

Since the a700's popup flash (must be up for Sony wireless to work) blocks the hotshoe, I rigged up a hotshoe-to-PC adapter to the camera's tripod threads via a bolt and a couple of washers.

Essendine

Not to everybody's taste - but I just had to have a go at tidying up this shot of A4 60009 Union of South Africa heading north with "The Cathedrals Express" from King's Cross to York.

I didn't have time to find a better viewpoint or even frame the shot better as the train came into view as I got out of the car.

I brought my laptop to Daniel's swimming lessons yesterday thinking I could tinker with it while I waited or maybe even find some free internet access. Sure enough, 4 wireless networks showed up. Most were secured in some way or another. Except one.

Of course once I was online, my curiosity got the better of me. I had to know if this kind person left the default router password. As usual, they did.

As you can see in the pic, it looks like I wasn't the only one taking advantage of Juanita's ignorance... er... ah... generosity.

Mad props to Juanita and her kind. You made me a very happy person for 45 minutes.

From Shorpy:"Anthony's Wireless Airship." A small powered blimp used in 1912 to demonstrate remote control of aircraft by wireless telegraphy. ("Professor Anthony has exhibited a method of airship control of his own by wireless. He and Leo Stephens recently gave an exhibition of starting, controlling, turning and stopping an airship by wireless which was quite a long distance from the station which controlled its action.")

My friend's shoddy wireless router was not working, so we took it apart to find the problem. Since the casing was a mess, we decided to encase the router in something else, which turned out to be broken Dreamcast controller. Geeky fun!

Completely unstable.

Obviously the network engineer didn't read the "must be configured to use the same radio channel" bit.

A bit alarming the "abcnet" network that's not even used on the 7th floor is SO strong and dominates the majority of the channels.

From the Gulf to the Seychelles 02.

A place we had spent some weekends at during our time in the Arabian Gulf was this ruined wireless station of WWII vintage. Anything of value had been stripped out, including the wooden window frames, but it gave us a chance to get off the ship. Offshore, there were lobsters among the rocks, and we improvised spears out of welding rods and went snorkling.

I never did find out where it was, apart from somewhere near the Strait of Hormuz.

We were about to sail across the Indian Ocean, and I was in trouble. Our captain loved to hear the BBC World Service news at eight o'clock each morning. I knew that reception was not possible in the south Indian Ocean, and not hearing the news would put him in a bad mood all day. So on the way out from UK I had recorded the news each morning as we sailed down the Atlantic, and cut and edited the tapes to make some fake news broadcasts to play as we sailed up the Indian Ocean. I had removed anything that might stick in the mind, just left the sort of mundane stuff you get in every news. Every morning in the Indian Ocean I would start the news tape precicely at 8am, so the pips were at exactly the right time, or the Captain might think his chronometer was wrong.

Now we were heading across the Indian Ocean again, and I would need those tapes again. But the reel to reel tape recorder had broken, it needed a part and I had no way of getting it.
