Winter landscape in February (Harstad, Norway)

I look at this now and it looks like a snow drift lit by the sun on the left and just in front of the dock... but actually it's a puddle reflecting the sky and a bit of the sunset on it.

Winter sunrise over the distant Sierra Nevada reflected in a Central Valley wetland pond.

This is another photograph in the (very!) “not pastel” series, contrasting with some of the subtler winter photographs I have shared this winter. It was a very intense sunrise — as another photographer there said, it was almost too intense. I arrived before sunrise, and the cloud shield from a weather front approaching from the west extended over and past me toward the sunrise. This left the eastern sky quite bright, and the edge of the clouds glowed in morning light.

The view looks toward the Sierra Nevada from the Central Valley. While the fog and haze in the valley often obscure the range, in clearer conditions you can see virtually all of it along the eastern horizon. This gives a sense of the scale of these mountains, and the fact that we see light in the sky beyond them reinforces the extraordinary distances that are in view..

G Dan Mitchell is a California photographer and visual opportunist. His book, “California’s Fall Color: A Photographer’s Guide to Autumn in the Sierra” is available from Heyday Books, Amazon, and directly from G Dan Mitchell.

The winds are howling at 45 to 50 mph, as the snow pelts Canadian Pacific's train 484 as it rounds the curve at Richwood during this winter's first impressive snowstorm.

Sunsets are a gift from Mother Nature and they're free for us all to enjoy. Even in the chill of Winter they can warm the heart.

Continuing my sunset week which I hope you enjoy. :-)

Thank you my friends for you support and friendship I hope you know how much I appreciate you all. :-))

I found this old photo from the winter of 1989-1990. These were our first 2 cats which we had for the first decade we were married. The ginger boy is Rufus, a refugee from a farm where he was ill & badly treated, & tabby/white Albert, who, despite her name, was a girl. They weren't super-close but as soon as the fire was lit they suddenly became best mates :)

Rufus (who blossomed into a complete star) had 10 great years with us, & Albert lived to almost 17. Both remembered very fondly. XX

"Winter Wonderland"

This is a shot from my latest trip to northern Finland.

Here I am located on a small mountain, just after the sun had set. Some beautiful arctic light in the sky, as well as the rest from the sun. Not too many mountains in Finland, compared to Norway, but still high enough to get a good view and get above some frost fog/low clouds.

Being able to be present in such places just takes your breath away.

Best,

Ole

Winter white lake view...by Nordaasvannet

Found this one among others from last month, taken in Hvalfjörður.

A little tribute to the cold winter, now that it has starting to rain and getting warmer as well as the daylight rises.

Take care and thanks for stopping by :o)

Macclesfield Forest winter 2016.

I have spent a good portion of the afternoon immersed in someone else's winter images. It has put me in a frosty sort of mood and makes me miss the icy bite of the wind.

wishing for winter again

Even winter flowers hold beauty.

It fascinates me how the different wild ones go about securing winter food. Each species has it's own method. The bison move their massive heads back and forth sweeping away the snow to get to the grass below.

THANKS

From so many flickr friends ….I seem to get some great and wonderful remarks about my photo…Which I think is fantastic…..And I really appreciate it so much so……So as a big thank you……I have decided to give you a blow by blow account of how this photo come about……

I am out walking in this winter wonderland…….Temperature reading, very cold……(That’s a very accurate reading by the way….Using the state of the art technology…..of losing all feeling in my fingers) The conditions are very treacherous under foot….The camera is hanging at the ready……The thought in my mind …..If I fall over…Save the camera at all cost…..Even if it means a loss of life…(Mine)…….The view in front is looking good……Just a few more yards and it will be perfect…..

Well that never happened…….Because it was that step to far…….One small step for mankind, for me to make complete idiot of myself……(Not hard to do…Yeah I know….But You are being very hard)…..So by now …I am on the way down…..With the thought of save that camera…..Accidently Pressing buttons tying to get a firm hold of it…….The gulls have reacted to my fall and taken flight…..But the other bird life are not as fast as the camera in my fumbling hands…..By now I have hit the deck…..The camera has a look of coming out of the fall ok….(I am not to sure about myself at this point)….On giving it a quick check ..I found that I had this image…I really hope you like it as much as I do……My point …I am just so really lucky with my photography and having friends like you…..

Its name contains winter but its appearance suggests spring. Maybe the flower should be called equinox?

This is how I love Winter. Very very cold, blue sky and frozen leaves. Almost one year ago. Hope we have the same weather this year.
