The ice-queen has left and she forgot her shoe.... Winter is over..... or does she return to collect her high-heel?

always wondered would I recognise a whimbrel if I saw it, but these were definitely curlews with their cry.

WINTER forests mutely standing

Naked on your bed of snow,

Wide your knotted arms expanding

To the biting winds that blow,

Nought ye heed of storm or stress,

Stubborn, silent, passionless.

Buried is each woodland treasure,

Gone the leaves and mossy rills,

Gone the birds that filled with pleasure

All the valleys and the hills;

Ye alone of all that host

Stand like soldiers at your post.

Grand old trees, the words ye mutter,

Nodding in the frosty wind,

Wake some thoughts I cannot utter,

But which haunt the heart and mind,

With a meaning, strange and deep,

As of visions seen in sleep.

Something in my inmost thinking

Tells me I am one with you,

For a subtle bond is linking

Nature's offspring through and through,

And your spirit like a flood

Stirs the pulses of my blood.

While I linger here and listen

To the crackling boughs above,

Hung with icicles that glisten

As if kindling into love,

Human heart and soul unite

With your majesty and might.

Horizontal, rich with glory,

Through the boughs the red sun's rays

Clothe you as some grand life-story

Robes an aged man with praise,

When, before his setting sun,

Men recount what he has done.

But the light is swiftly fading,

And the wind is icy cold,

And a mist the moon is shading,

Pallid in the western gold;

In the night-winds still ye nod,

Sentinels of Nature's God.

Now with laggard steps returning

To the world from whence I came,

Leave I all the great West burning

With the day that died in flame, .

And the stars, with silver ray,

Light me on my homeward way.

Snowy rain always has a nice feel to it. Not that I was touching it.

Winter landscape in Alps mountains

A tributary of the Chena River is frozen over and fog hangs in the air. Spruce trees and dying grasses add color to the frozen scene. The ice has vent holes from the still unfrozen water below.

Winter in Alaska is a beautiful time of year. Most of the visitors have left and the locals remain. It is a time of quiet, a time of being alone. Rarely does anyone wander off the roads during winter, so when you get off the road, it is just you and the animals and the scenery.

As I have gotten older, the winter treks have become fewer. My wife and I do get out when we can but I have to be honest, it is not as much as before in our younger years. Old age isn't for the weak for sure. We both hope to be able to get out and enjoy both winter and the warmer months for years to come, just won't be as long and as often as when we were younger.

On Explore, January 16 - thank you all for your comments.

No, this is not THE river shot Ive been searching for......lol. Took this last week after the snow stopped and the sun (what there was of it) was setting. The sidewalks still werent shoveled yet so I was standing in snow 2 feet deep to shoot this. The plow had gone by and pushed all the snow from the street to the side of the road making it even more fun to get to this vantage point...lol. I just love our winter so far :-)

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Stay warm and safe.

Last night was the winter solstice - the longest night of the year. I had gone out earlier yesterday to see if there was a good sunrise over Lysterfield Lake and came across these lovely pastel colours. No frost though and only a little bit of mist. Lysterfield Lake was part of the water supply for Melbourne but is now a National Park and playground for the South East suburbs. It also hosted the Mountain Bike course for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games some years back and huge number of cyclists use these paths regularly.

Finally had the chance to leave the non-snowy Southern Finland and visit these winter landscapes here in Puolanka. Happy holidays!

The original photo was of the Sheboygan riverfront after a recent light snowfall. Photoleap was used to create this image, adding elements of other photos I have taken.

BTW- The Sheboygan River's currents are rapid, so people do not use the iced-over river for recreational purposes during the winter. Ice thickness varies from day to day, and it will often be ice-free after a hard freeze just the day before.

What do you prefer? This or my next photo? Are you preferably inside or outside your home in winter?

Thank you for viewing, faving and commenting/answering!

from last winter...this was one of the first times out with my D200, and I was disappointed with the performance of the battery in very cold conditions ( -25 C )...now I head out with a couple of spares in a pocket near my body to keep them warm. At this temperature, battery power plummets very quickly--I almost drained a battery in under an hour. It was also one of my first tries with an ND grad filter...I used a cokin 2-stop soft filter mounted on the wide-angle version of the P holder...the edges of which were visible at 12mm on the Tokina 12-24mm lens.

I think this image demonstrates the classic landscape principle of using lines to draw the eye into the distance
