My cheap little solar energy wind chime turned out to be a good buy ! At night little colored lights go through the Humming birds changing colors !

In the high plateau of Madeira, quickening winds not only conjure clouds from clear sky -- they also generate a large percentage of the island's energy needs.

For me, Paúl da Serra is the second most magical place in the tiny Portuguese island of Madeira. Unfortunately, to see it at its best you need clear skies which are not very common. After making the difficult drive up here (one of the main approach roads was shut due to a landslide) we were greeted with thick clouds and high winds which didn't offer much visibility.

It wasn't all gloomy though, every now and then a gap in the clouds would rush past in the stiff winds and the sun would shine through drenching the scene in colours and offering a view off into the distance. Still, it was a far cry from what I'd seen the last time I visited the island in 2008 (see: www.flickr.com/photos/sidaths/tags/pa%C3%BAldaserra/).

Of all the photos I took on my most recent trip to this plateau, however, this photo is the one that I liked the most. It features some of the wind turbines that dominate the skyline of the plateau, and can be seen clearly from the most magical place in Madeira...

This California wildflower, Papaver heterophyllum, is a favorite of mine. For one thing, its 2" (5 cm) blooms are larger than most native flowers.

Around the star dunes, the contours of the sand take on a cerebral-like pattern. Another instance when I felt guilty for walking across such a natural wonder.
