I just returned after being away 4 months and my garden is a wild tangle! Much is blooming, Fall is a nice time in my garden. Here are small iris blooms on tall stalks, all tangled up with the purple velvet blooms of Mexican sage. The tree abloom on right is a Tea Tree. Its huge, this is a glimpse. Needs a lot of pruning.

A small portion of the people out at this particular site of the fire in the Frenchman River Valley, along the Ecotour road, just before the bridge. The semi on the left is hauling tanks of water to and from the various hot spots. Women were busy making sandwiches for the firefighters, who came from all over this region — hundreds of ks. Volunteers were delivering carboys of water to whomever needed hydration.
Spotting wild horses at the Oostvaardersplassen in the Netherlands. This is the largest flock of wild Konik horses in Europe.

The African wild dog hunts in packs and small groups. Like most members of the dog family, it is a cursorial hunter, meaning that it pursues its prey in a long, open chase. Nearly 80% of all wild dog hunts end in a kill; for comparison, the success rate of lions, often viewed as ultimate predators, is only 30%. The misleadingly placid appearance of this fellow can prove fatal to many an unfortunate antelope or other animal victim. African Wild Dogs are experts in team work and are know to chase their prey over long distances and then literally tear the unfortunate victim apart when it's still alive. (Al Ain, Dec. 2012)
Wild fennel grows everywhere in this section of Fort Ord. It's very aromatic, which was lucky for us, because we held bunches of it up to our noses to ward off the absolutely nauseating smell of the dogs, who managed, within seconds of our arrival, to roll in something that smelled like the bowels of hell.
Had a treat while doing laundry, I heard a racket of birds squawking and they didn't sound like our usual crows, so I went to investigate and discovered these guys.
They are feasting on the seed pods of this tree, unfortunately I do not know the name of this tree. I was told by a neighbor that these guys are Conures. They are beautifully bright green with a darker head and very lively.

I was in for a surprise when I looked up this Florida shrub and learned that wild coffee contains dimethyltryptamine, not caffeine. Also called DMT, this is a hallucinogenic substance.

Taken in an alpine setting, approx. 5,000 feet elevation, San Bernardino National Forest, California, between Lake Arrowhead and Running Springs.
Maybe the most unusual campsite we've ever had - also a serious contender for second best. This is right on the edge of the Rio Grande Gorge.
We drove around and looked at all of the sites right on the gorge. Very few had any place at all to put a tent, if there was a spot, it was usually in what looked like it would become drainage in a storm. All of the sites had concrete pads and metal roofs and of the sites that were in use, most had set up their tents under the roofs. We were thinking that they might know something we didn't so, as the saying goes, when in Rome...
It felt weird, like setting the tent up inside a house. But when the hail started on the second night, it sounded like the whole Blue Man Group was up there on the metal roof banging away. We were glad to be "inside".
