Nixes mate - or Nix's mate - is one of the smallest Boston islands, mostly covered at low tide. I'm sure the structure was put there so that ships would stop grounding themselves. In the 1700s, some people convicted of piracy were gibbeted there and their bodies left as a warning to others. The island has shrunk because of quarrying for ballast and slate, according to Wikipedia.
