Towards the end of our journey, Captain Larry turned off the motor and we just floated, eyes and ears alert for signs of whales. We didn't have to wait long before one decided to come right up to the boat. She was so close, I was afraid that the wide-angle end of my lens would still be too much zoom (and it's not exactly much of a telephoto).
Standing 20 feet from a whale preparing to dive and hearing it fill its lungs with air is an incredible experience. When I saw the tell-tale arch of the body that can only mean one thing, I was almost giddy. Seeing tail is exciting, period. Seeing tail from 20 feet away...even better.
