Weight throw (or Weight for distance) is a traditional strength sport and throwing event derived from ancient Scottish Highland games. Unlike its other counterpart, the Weight over bar which involves a stationary pendulum like swing for height, the Weight throw involves a full body rotation and throwing of a metal ball attached to a handle via a chain, for the furthest distance. It has been used both in Highland games (Scottish Gaelic: caitheamh cuideam) as well as in track and field.

With an unladen weight of 14 tons and a top speed of 12 m.ph this 1950 registered ex Pickford's FG Foden 6x4 ballast tractor, Reg No HGB 631, is seen here hauling one of the many purpose built trailers that Edward Beck built in house at their own extensive workshops in Stockport.

With a large steel tank on board it is heading up Liverpool Road towards Deansgate in the centre of Manchester in 1955.

Later that same year HGB 631 would go into the company's paint shop and receive the familiar striking Beck 'Parson Primrose Yellow' livery which would became the company's trademark for many years.

Today the large building on the right houses Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry

The 2023 Atholl Gathering and Highland Games, Blair Castle, Blair Atholl, Perthshire

Limited Edition Teal Jasmine deboxed. She is posed standing, supported by her included display stand.

Because of the weight of her hair, when it is placed in its natural position behind her, it unbalances her and makes her head and back lean backwards. The base of the doll stand is slick and the top clamp doesn't help that much to keep her in position, so she tends to slide forwards on the stand as well. So it's a chore to make her stand straight up for the photos (or just for displaying her). Red Jasmine has a similar problem that is even more severe, since her pony tail juts out behind her, and her neck and upper torso joints aren't as stiff as they are on my Teal Jasmine.

Detailed photos of my pre-ordered Teal Jasmine 17 inch doll. I picked her up on release day (Tuesday October 13, 2015) from my local Disney Store. She is #1834 of 5000. She has a similar color difference between her torso and the rest of her body (including her head) as that of my Red Jasmine doll. There is golden sheen in her torso that is especially noticeable in her neck and upper chest. I like Teal Jasmine much more than I thought I would from my initial look at the stock photos and even seeing the display doll in person, although Red Jasmine is still my favorite of the two.

She is photographed boxed, during deboxing, and fully deboxed. She is also posed with other comparable dolls.

Manufacturer/Model: Nedinsco ‘s Gravenhage/Carl Zeiss Jena Deltrentis 8X30

Field of View: 8.5 deg = 150 m/1,000 m; APFOV 68 deg

Weight: 585 gr

Exit Pupil: 3.75 mm

Serial #/Year of Manufacture: 1296436 = 1925

Notes: See: www.flickr.com/photos/binocwpg/8559764813/in/photolist-9k... for a detailed description of the Deltrentis 8X30.

Nedinsco (Nederlansche Instrumenten Compagnie) was a Zeiss subsidiary established in the Neatherlands in 1921 to circumvent the Treaty of Versailles by the manufacture military optics (including high quality submarine periscopes) although civilian model binoculars were also made. The factory was in Venlo, but the business office was located in ‘s Gravenhage (The Hague) which is why this name is sometimes forms part of the Nedinsco trademark. During WW II the factory was bombed, and after the war the business was nationalized and then privatized (1953) supplying the Dutch military with optical instruments including binoculars. The company is still in operation.

Nedinsco Zeiss serial numbers are included in the Zeiss Jena range and are not a separate series. Zeiss production records (“Zeiss Handferngläser 1919-1946 Modele-Merkmale-Mythos ”, Hans Seeger, 2015, page 856) show this binocular is from a group of 800 consecutively numbered Nedinsco Deltrentis manufactured in 1925. The arrow in a U marking on the left prism plate is a Union of South Africa property mark indicating South African military usage. On the right prism plate there is a diamond in a U marking (see View 2: www.flickr.com/photos/binocwpg/18839869158/in/photostream/ ) which is a Kimberley Arsenal acceptance mark. The same marking is also found on some South African Lee Enfields used during the 1920's and on brass oilers for the rifle. Considering the year of manufacture and markings this binocular is almost surely one of at least 250 ordered by the South African government during the 1920’s. Terence Weyland has graciously provided the following interesting archival information about South African binocular purchases during this time:

It was in File WO 395/5 from the National Archives. It is one of a series relating to military purchases. Unfortunately they are incomplete and lack detail. Your item is from the year ending 31-3-1929 under the heading Optical and Scientific Instruments:

"A request has been received from South Africa that the War Department should inspect on their behalf 250 Zeiss binoculars made in the Zeiss Dutch factory. It was considered that binoculars of equal quality could have been obtained in this country at lower cost, and while it was agreed as a special case that inspection should be carried out by this Department, representations were made by the Secretary of State (for War) to the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs that the South African Defence Department did not appear to be carrying out the principle of preferential treatment for British suppliers which was implied by the South African Government's decision to admit British made binoculars free of duty."

Later in the file:

"The matter has been referred by the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs to Cape Town and it is hoped to ensure that a similar position does not occur in the future."

In the year ending 31-3-1930 the following is noted:

"Binoculars for South Africa. We have received an enquiry from South Africa for prices. A satisfactory quotation received from a British firm being considered."

From File WO 395/6, from the year ending 31-3-1931:

"South Africa have ordered 550 prismatic binoculars from Ross Ltd."

I expected the Nedinsco Deltrentis to be an exact copy of the Zeiss Jena model, but after servicing the binocular, I’m not sure this is the case. Note that how in View 3 www.flickr.com/photos/binocwpg/19022074822/in/photostream/ : 1) a section of the eyepiece baffling tube can be pulled out to allow removal of the ocular prism, a feature I have not seen before on any other binocular including Zeiss ones. And 2) the prism is secured by a snap-in bar instead of a screw-down one which although often present in binoculars made by other manufacturers notably Leitz has not been seen before in any made by Zeiss.

See: www.flickr.com/photos/binocwpg/20200348104/in/dateposted/ for a picture and description of a Wollensak M5 6X30 also with a South African property mark.
