... but who cares when it's so beautiful?

I noticed these tiny little puple flowers sprouting on my lawn. So like any good photog, I grabbed the camera and the macro lens, got down on the ground, and snapped some picks. Turns out these tiny little flowers are actually little weeds that grow in the grass. Just goes to show you that at the right vantage point, even a weed can be beautiful.

This weed really has this vivid yellow color on the blossoms. The desert areas of Arizona are said to be the best for bloom now, the best for maybe 50 years.

A.k.a. dead flower bouquet. The little man can't go outside without picking me a handful. I started having to put them in vases as he gets so upset when I leave them outside.

Did some experiments over the weekend, using my Canon S2IS to shoot through a reversed 50mm lens from my old SLR. Got a few interesting results, of which here is the first. Zooming in further makes it nearly impossible to focus, so most of the "keeper" shots show the heavy vignette. Nothing here to show scale, but this weed is tiny...

A seed-laden weed by the banks of the Mystic Lakes, Arlington, MA. It was very cold and the wind was blowing madly today. I took a few more shots then walked straight home where it was warm and welcoming.

I always thought dandelions were a nuisance and a weed but here is some interesting myths and legends about them that I found:

- If you blow a seed head, the number of seeds remaining are the number of children you will have.

- When dandelions appear in dreams, they are thought to represent happy unions.

- Legend has it that the tallest dandelion stalk that a kid could find in the early spring will show how much taller he or she will grow in the coming year.

- If you blow on a white dandelion head and every seed scatters then you are loved. If some seeds still cling to the stalk, you're out of luck.

- If you make a wish right before blowing on dandelion, your wish just might come true.

- Others claim that the number of seeds remaining are how many years you have left to live.

- Burying near the northwestern corner of your home is said to bring good weather.

The way the sun just barely touched the top of this weed drew me in.

Who says weeds are ugly?

This was growing out in the pasture near the asparagus.
