Well 2015 has been a rather interesting year, both on and off the pitch! As far as the photography goes, it could probably be best described as 'half decent'.
Positives include starting to run my own workshops and private tuition as well as setting up a new website which fits much more with where I want to be going. Getting an image commended in this years Landscape Photographer of the Year book was a highlight followed by a trip to London at the awards night. I also managed to spend practically nothing on new equipment (which I consider a triumph) but most importantly I genuinely feel I have pushed my approach to the craft of photography forward and have been experimenting with a few new ideas.
This image being a case in point, a picture of some weed in a local pond taken in infrared. It's not instantly a 'fave', is it? In fact, it looks a bit scruffy and I can't even really see what it is?! No matter, it looks amazing at three feet wide and it's actually great fun creating images on an overcast day on the Mendips when we haven't seen the sun for about a month.
It also looks far better not crushed to death on Flickr, but I don't make images for social media so it really doesn't bother me. In fact I'm so bored with the endless flow of small, low quality social media posts that I am currently researching locations to hold an exhibition and get my work displayed in the way it should be: big, bold and in a place where time can be spent to enjoy them, not clicking on a button and rushing off to the next experience.
So have a great New Year folks, every day is a blessing :)
The website for Malibu Creek State Park describes the park like this in its opening paragraph:
Considered the recreational crown jewel of the Santa Monica Mountains, Malibu Creek State Park has over 8,000 acres of rolling tallgrass plains, oak savannahs and dramatic peaks. It's no wonder many call it "The Yosemite of Southern California".
The park was owned by 20th Century Fox from 1946-1974, and portions of classic movies like Planet of the Apes, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, M*A*S*H, and have been filmed in and around here.
Century Lake Dam is a nice rest stop on the way to the old M*A*S*H TV series set.
I finally scored some cloudless skies along the coast. Third time is a charm. The forecast was for clear skies, so I drove over to the coast arriving at 2 a.m. After setting up my gear, and taking a few shots I realized it was not exactly clear skies. There were ultra thin clouds in the upper atmosphere that I could not see with my eyes. There was only a two minute window during the shoot that gave me clear skies, so here it is. There were an amazing amount of shooting stars on this shoot, so I blended a few of them in.
The best part after the shoot was a really nice sunrise, and then walking across the street to Davenport Bakery, and getting a quad americano, and turkey and cheese croissant fresh out of the oven!
Nikon 14-24mm
Stars shot @ F/3.2 @ ISO 1600 @ 41 seconds
Foreground shot @ F/5.6 @ ISO 320 @ 332 seconds
Something I learned from this shoot:
The Nikon 14-24mm is an amazing lens for capturing the stars, but if you don't hold your hand on the zoom ring while wiping moisture, you end up moving the zoom in.
While reviewing my shots on the shoot, I saw that my images were changing perspective, and I realized I was pushing the glass in while wiping. A zoom lock would be a great addition to this lens.
I also learned that with full frame cameras you can divide 600 by your mm length, potentially allowing you more than 30 seconds to shoot the stars. 600 divided by 14mm gives you 42.8 seconds. I used this information to lower my ISO and go up to F/3.2. Sharper image and lower noise!
Enough babble.

City Hall (London), Queen's Walk, London, England
UPDATE OCTOBER 2012 - #1 on Explore for 01.10.2012 - thank you very much everybody! My first ever #1 explore!!:-)
Really enjoyed visiting and editing this place. Again I went last year in Open House but came bit disappointed as my lenses were not wide enough to get the images I wanted.
Friend and photographer Mark Hepples went to City Hall late on in the day, around 1700, I thought it was going to be fairly quiet as most people would have been in the morning but actually it was quite the opposite. We couldn't even get on the balcony at one point to look at the views due to the amount of people. Also looking at this image you get the sense of how many people were in the building at this time. For those who went in the morning was it quiet?
Now this image, I put my Samyang 8mm fisheye on. This lens really compliments the building well due to the massive sweeping curves and bends in the spiral staircase, 0.5km of it. I did used my Sigma 10-20 but it just didn't create the effect that I wanted. Big thanks to Mark Hepples for the name of this image, the fisheye makes it resemble a Helter Skelter, massively over emphasising the curves which is what I wanted. Be sure to check out Marks photostream, he has some awesome images on Flickr and he is also uploading his Open House images too.
I am really enjoying all of your Open House images and your photographic interpretations of the buildings you visited. Keep them coming!!

Information
City Hall is the headquarters of the Greater London Authority (GLA) which comprises the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. It is located in Southwark, on the south bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge. It was designed by Norman Foster and opened in July 2002, two years after the Greater London Authority was created.
The building has an unusual, bulbous shape, purportedly intended to reduce its surface area and thus improve energy efficiency, although energy use measurements have shown this building to be fairly inefficient in terms of energy use. It has been compared variously to Darth Vader's helmet, a misshapen egg, a woodlouse and a motorcycle helmet. Former mayor Ken Livingstone referred to it as a "glass testicle" while the present mayor, Boris Johnson, has referred to it as "The Glass Gonad" and more politely as "The Onion". Its designers reportedly saw the building as a giant sphere hanging over the Thames, but opted for a more conventionally rooted building instead. It has no front or back in conventional terms but derives its shape from a modified sphere.
A 500-metre (1,640 ft) helical walkway, reminiscent of that in New York's Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, ascends the full height of the building. At the top of the ten-story building is an exhibition and meeting space called "London's Living Room", with an open viewing deck which is occasionally open to the public. The walkway provides views of the interior of the building, and is intended to symbolise transparency; a similar device was used by Foster in his design for the rebuilt Reichstag (parliament) in Germany. In 2006 it was announced that solar photovoltaic cells would be fitted to the building by the London Climate Change Agency.

Spend 15 months in Banff, Canada.
I like catchy colors, analog, sharpness and especially bokeh.
Branches from the devastating winter ice storm are piled throughout the city in heaps, then shredded into mulch. The mulch piles are twenty feet high and a hundred feet around.
There will be lots of free mulch this summer.

Aloft London Excel Hotel, London, England
I am really enjoying revisiting some old photos, I think its good for every photographer to do this once in a while as you often see photos differently compared to when you originally took the photo. I would never had thought I would edit this photo in this way but with a fresh set of eyes I did.
Anyway, this is the Aloft Hotel in the Docklands area of London, again another fabulous staircase, small but big in character. I just love the wood graining and the textures from it as well as the rendered wall, they really contrast each other as well as compliment each other.
I have done a couple of versions of this staircase but this if by far my favourite as the darker colour and slight underexposure really brings out the detail in the wood for all to enjoy.

Location Information
Aloft Hotels is a brand of hotels based in North America. Its parent company is Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, although it is referred to as "a vision of W Hotels". The concept was developed in 2005, with the first hotel opening at the Trudeau International Airport in Montreal in 2008. Aloft Hotels have since opened across North America and internationally. Most Aloft hotels are located in city centers or in close proximity to airports.
The brand is most notable for its modern architecture design style, with unique technical aspects and an atmosphere that encourages socialization.[1] Another characteristic of Aloft hotels is the naming of basic hotel amenities. For example, in each hotel, the swimming pool is referred to as "splash". The staff of Aloft Hotels use the same lingo, and may greet guests by saying "Aloha!".
