Happy to announce that this image of a White-throated Dipper taken in Kuusamo, Finland got Highly Commended in the Birds in their Environment category in the Bird Photographer of the Year 2018 competition. It seems that the website is not in perfect order, but got the confirmation per email today and the image will also be published in the respective Bird Photographer of the Year 2018 book.
Bird Photographer of the Year is a global photographic competition; a celebration of avian beauty and diversity and therefore proud to be among the commended photographers.
Background info:
Went with a good friend of mine (Tapio Kaisla) to Kuusamo in Finland. Placed just against the Arctic Circle its a pure magic place during the Winter... well and I suppose during the Summer as well, but haven't been there yet during that part of the year.
Arrived in Kuusamo when it was below -20°C and climbed up a small hill called Konttainen to photograph stars. Not happy with any of the results so my first upload is an image from the 2nd day. After visiting Myllykoski in the Oulanka National Park we drove to Käylänkoski, which is a rapid that doesn't freeze during the cold Winter. There are therefore lots of White-throated Dippers (Cinclus cinclus) and counted 10-15 different individuals on this particular day. As usual when photographing 'Dippers' I try to use a slow shutter speed. Those birds are active and don't sit still for a very long time.
Hard work... but happy with this result, and it seems I wasn't the only one who enjoyed this image.

The FAA website(where you go to register your drone) says not to fly over 400'. At first I was nervous to fly over 50ft, now I get to 400' and just wish I could go higher! Some day I will probably break the rules and go higher but for now I'll keep in on the straight and narrow.
This photo was taken using the the 3 shot AEB from the DJI GO app. The app makes flying and shooting soooooo easy.

« In memoriam et exemplum »
The paint underneath the organ represents the Last Judgment; this set is remarkable for its size, its quality and layout mirroring (Creation of the World / Judgement). This gigantic painting of the Last Judgment (1474-1484) originally covered about 200 m2. Painted in tempera, there are three registers: heaven, earth and hell where the wicked gesticulate in compartments dedicated to the seven deadly sins.

February 2021, Photo Tour to Kuusamo, Finland - image 10:
Riisitunturi National Park during sunset. The park's humid climatic conditions contribute to its natural beauty. In winter the spruce trees that cover many of the park's hillsides are clad with a thick coating of condensed frost, creating a photogenic white forest.

I am happy to be the first photographer interviewed by Velvet Eyes, a new promising photography website.
A big thanks to the curator team, Laura Uslar and Stanley Bloom
Love the site design! Check it out! Great stuffs in there.
Southern Ontario just went through the worst ice storm in many years. Trees some hundreds of years old were destroyed by the weight of the two inch thick ice that encased their branches. So many branches broke under the weight of the ice that entire parks and forests were decimated..
Thank you for visiting and marking my photo as a favourite and for the kind comments,.

This is the first of four images that I am posting here. The black and white photos below were posted before many of you were contacts, and I think you might enjoy seeing them. :o) They are all garden themes....ie. the BEAUTY OF NATURE'S PATTERNS AND LIGHT. This is a magical world and we could live in this indescribably beautiful paradise forever...if we cherish and protect it. Here are some websites that are full of positive ideas regarding sustainable ecology and renewable energy. www.apolloalliance.org ..... www.greenbiz.com ..... www.renewableenergyaccess.com ......

I went to the beach determined not to get wet. I wore somewhat waterproof shoes, but was adamant about keeping them dry. I had scouted out a spot to shoot for sunset earlier, but literally about 10 minutes before the sunset, I chickened out and decided that the composition I had settled on was no good. Like a chicken with its head cutoff, I started running up and down the beach frantically trying to find a spot to set up. I found this nice shiny rock that was reflecting the colors of the sky quite nicely, so I decided to try and work it into the composition. Unfortunately, this rock was surrounded by water, and any images of it from the dry sand were pretty crappy. I wasn't going home empty handed, so I rolled up the jeans and trudged through the ocean to set up on top of this rock. As cold as the water was, I'd say it was worth the sandy shoes. :)

some website about crows and ravens, which I shall not name here, has taken many of my shots and posted a link to my whole crow set without any permission. I have emailed them to take them off ASAP, but so far no answer and the images are still posted.
Since my privacy settings prohibit any downloading or printing, I am somewhat puzzled how they got them in the first place. Does anybody know?
I don't like wildlife shots with a huge name printed right on the image, but I can understan why.

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish all my followers a very Happy New Year and all the best for the year ahead. Whether you're out celebrating tonight or simply tucked up in bed, I hope you have a great time seeing in the start of 2019.
For my final post of 2018, I thought I'd share one of the last images I've taken this year. I've been up in Scotland for the past few days, and whilst the weather hasn't played ball much of the time, I've certainly tried to make the most of it.
I'd seen many images from the popular summit of Ben A'an overlooking Loch Katrine so planned a sunrise shoot up there a couple of days ago. The sunrise itself was pretty bland and cloudless, but I waited around as I noticed a layer of cloud blowing in from the distance.
Whilst I didn't get the shot I'd planned towards Loch Katrine, I was very pleased with this shot I captured in the other direction looking towards Loch Achray. This rock provided a perfect foreground, and I just loved the moody crepuscular rays beaming through the dark clouds that eventually cloaked the sky above.
Luckily I was up there before the crowds arrived, as I met a conveyor belt of people going up when I was descending. It's certainly a popular little hill, and rightly so as the views are tremendous.
Anyway, I'll leave you all with this....my last post of 2018. This year has certainly been one of my most successful years in terms of photography, from capturing the Beast From The East in Cumbria to the spectacular and breathtaking landscape of the Faroe Islands. I hope 2019 provides many more adventures.........
Best wishes, Matt.

You may have seen my previous uploads, metallic colored images of Barnacle Geese (Branta leucopsis) mainly. Well, that morning it was cloudy and most images were taken during the so called blue hour. The next morning I went back to experience a different morning. Beautiful pink-like sunrise, not a single cloud in the sky and little to no wind. The images I took that day were different than the ones from the previous morning.

A woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa, in the family Rosaceae. There are over three hundred species and thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing, or trailing, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwestern Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Roses have acquired cultural significance in many societies. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach seven meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses. R_20098
