As street photographers, we are only too well aware of the devastation wreaked on the high street by Covid-19. With most retail being forced to close as wave-after-wave of restrictions have been imposed, foot traffic has fallen off a cliff. People are in the most part nowhere to be seen. If they are, it is scurrying to the supermarkets and food shops masked and keen to avoid the eye of anyone they meet.
Although initially the pain of cinemas was shared in the press, for the most part, their pain has been relegated to the back pages of the business section, as other larger and more visible businesses cry out for help. Unfortunately, any business, local or global within the hospitality sector has been particularly hard hit. Cinemas with their business model relying on packing in as many customers into a confined space for several hours have virtually nowhere to go. Even after the restrictions are lifted, people are going to be highly reticent for some time yet to spend several hours in darkness within inches of unknown strangers.
In North London, we had been blessed with a number of independent cinema groups, who invested heavily to innovate and offer unique film going experiences. Whether in the food they offered, the range of films shown or the comfort and luxury of the cinemas themselves. Prices while slightly higher than the mass-market cinema chains were not exorbitant and business was good.
They now lie forlorn and in darkness on the high street. Almost as if a display of defiance, the Arthouse cinema in Crouch End continued to light its façade, perhaps sending out the message that it had not given up and intended one day to return to its former glory. I felt I wanted to capture its pain as it remained under enforced closure.
When photographing the cinema, I looked to isolate the building from the surroundings, which were either unattractive or on the adjacent side, a building site. To achieve this I exposed for the highlights and allowed parts of the building to fall into shadow. At f11 I was able to create a small sunburst from the main light just above the statue. The 6400 ISO did not appear to create a significant amount of noise and with image stabilisation, I was able to achieve a relatively sharp image at 1/10s handheld.
In post-production, I used Adobe Camera Raw for my initial workflow and firstly worked to bring out the maximum amount of detail in the colour shot. I then imported the final DNG into Photoshop for some cleaning up and curve adjustments before importing into Silver Effex to create deeper shadows and more definition in the highlights.

A male Two-barred Crossbill (Loxia leucoptera) on snow... There is a small invasion of this beautiful crossbill in Southern Finland right now. There was some snow when I took this picture, but not to isolate the crossbill fully and give the overall image that very simple effect I like so much. So I did let it snow a bit more... hope you dont mind.

Grenada Distillers Limited the island’s best-known and largest distillery and one of the most interesting historical sites. The factory has been in operation since 1937, and is situated in the southern part of the island, in the Parish of St George.
When you arrive you would be welcomed by one of our friendly and knowledgeable tour guides, who would explain our history and all the different processes and stages of making our fine rum. You would learn of the distilling process from sugar cane, syrup and molasses, to rum, and also the aging, blending and bottling processes of making rum. On tour you would also get the opportunity to discover old steam engines, some dating as far back as 1886.
The tour of the factory lasts about fifteen minutes, after which you would be escorted to our Hospitality Center, where you will see our unique Barrel Furniture and an interesting display of the Clarke’s Court products. Last but not least, you are invited to sample our award-winning rums at the sample bar. You would be given recipes on different ways you can mix our rum and truly appreciate the taste of our fine products.
I guess a rum distillery is a must for any visitor to the Caribbean.
URBAN ART FESTIVAL

The Urban Art Festival Amsterdam presents and exhibits artwork by contemporary urban artists, including paintings on canvas, sculptures, photography, designer toys, video installations and video mapping.
Each night, an electronic music party alongside live and synchronised video performances will complement the exhibition.
The last day will host an artistic trade-fair called “underground market” where local artist labels, collectives and individuals will sell and promote their own art pieces such as clothes, jewellery, toys, music, publications and handcrafts.
The artist line-up guarantees an exciting and diverse exhibition. Many of our artists will paint three murals on Saturday @ OT301.

I spent a very enjoyable afternoon getting completely lost in the El Carmen district of Valencia. In addition to an abundance of street art the place was full of characterful old buildings.
One of the most prolific Street Artists active in the city is David de Limón. His murals are immediately recognisable for their ubiquitous Robot Ninja character.

From an interview, "David de Limón, a well-known Valencian street artist, is a living example of the unique and envious culture that fuels the Spanish region’s glowing heart. If you venture this way, minutes after arriving in Valencia, you will notice the colorful street art marking each corner. You’ll gaze at older couples, romance still alive, sharing a coffee at ten in the morning on a Monday. Your mind will wonder at families picking up their children after school, both parents present and holding hands. Valencia is a city that puts family and the savoring of life at the highest level of priority. David, born and raised in the city and now celebrated by it, brings this culture to light on the streets with his art.
Graffiti came into David’s life when he was just seventeen. On his family’s annual trip to the mountains, which many of the families in his neighborhood took, he met two boys from his class who did graffiti. From then on, he was hooked. He had always loved doing art and this was a way for him to take doodling during class to an entirely new level. The last name, “de Limón,” isn’t his real surname but his graffiti tag. Valencia is known for its oranges and, to make things interesting, David chose to base his tag name off of the lemon (which he saw as the opposite of the orange). The lemon later became the signature image of David’s move from graffiti writing to street art.
While David’s work can be found being sold in various Valencia store fronts and his classic ninja character commissioned on walls around the city, he wasn’t always so…accepted. In his early graffiti years, the cover of night failed David three times and the police caught him. Two of those times he got lucky and was only written up. The third, however, took a turn and David had to appear in court. He recalled the story with a fit of laughter, the fine that the judge ordered was even less than it would have cost for him to paint over what he wrote on the wall. Now, no longer eighteen and with two sons under the age of five, David says that he doesn’t have enough time to do “vandalism.” "
