flowerGarden is an web-based software application, produced in Flash, for real-time social network and conversation visualization. It was used at the 3-day Bodies in Play summit in Banff, May 2005, at which the 50 participants were invited to input information about who they spoke to and what they discussed during the duration of the event. The visualization was projected on a large screen in the main summit venue to reflect the current state of the social network and discussion space of the summit. Each participant, upon entering information into a form, is visually represented by a flower, with a petal growing on the flower in real-time as a new conversation is entered. The flowers of individuals who have conversed with one another are connected by green vines, and the closer two flowers are distanced from each other the more those people have spoken. The concepts discussed between all participants are laid out in the background according to their frequency of use. By rolling over flowers, petals, and words, different perspectives of the information can be seen.

HUNT VALLEY, Md. (June 15, 2015) - Student teams from all over the country are arriving here today to take part as national finalists in the U. S. Army's 13th annual eCYBERMISSION competition. The web-based science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competition is designed to cultivate student interest in STEM by encouraging students in grades six through nine to develop solutions to real world problems in their local communities.
The 20 national finalist teams were chosen from a group of 60 regional finalists. A panel of judges consisting of U.S. Army scientists and engineers, educators, and STEM professionals will select the national winners during the National Judging and Educational Event held this week.
Code for Oakland is a one day workshop for people interested in using Oakland and Alameda County, CA data to build mobile apps for the 2011 Knight/FCC Apps for Communities Competition (see appsforcommunities.challenge.gov)
The Knight Foundation and the FCC came to Oakland, CA in April 2011 to announce a major new tech competition called Apps for Communities that will award $100,000 in prizes to reward mobile and web-based applications that use government and public data to "deliver personalized, actionable information to people that are least likely to be online."
So, that’s where Code for Oakland comes in. We’re pulling together a low-cost one-day Bar Camp that will bring government officials, developers, designers, and interested parties together for a day that will be devoted to looking at local datasets of use to people in Oakland, and that gives teams a chance to talk through, brainstorm and prototype their ideas before the competition closes on July 11.

Members of the Virginia Defense Force conduct training and evaluation on multiple communications systems Sept. 24, 2016, at Fort Pickett, Virginia. VDF troops are organized into response teams that provide capabilities like high frequency radio, Statewide Agencies Radio System, incident management assistance and operation of Mobile Communications Platform trailers, and all of those capabilities were evaluated to make sure the teams are trained and ready to assist the Virginia National Guard if needed during domestic response operations. These frames, created for an iPhone 4, were generated using a web-based, vector frame design application I developed and cut on a laser cutter.
Over the month of August, we will be featuring the work of British artist Chris Meigh-Andrews, including his latest project: a site-specific, web-based installation on the grounds of Down House – the family home of naturalist Charles Darwin – in Kent, England. ‘In Darwin’s Garden’ takes as its focus an old mulberry tree growing at back of the house, which serves to represent the relationship between the domestic life of the Darwin family, the garden as a site for Charles Darwin’s careful and systematic observation of natural processes that he drew on in developing his theory of Natural Selection, and the slow but inevitable change in the cycle of life and the seasons. The work has been developed by the artist with the collaboration and assistance of Alan Summers (University of Chester) and Rowan Blaik (Head gardener, Down House).

NASA’s Community College Aerospace College Workshop at #NASAMarshall
Community college students from across the nation attend the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars workshop at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, Oct. 25-28.
Underrepresented and underserved students having successfully completed the program’s five-week-long, web-based curriculum were eligible to attend this on-site experience. During the workshop, students formed fictional companies to develop and test prototype rovers for future Mars exploration. Aligned with NASA’s Journey to Mars and efforts to develop a diverse workforce experienced in aerospace and aeronautics, NCAS workshop students attend briefings with NASA engineers and scientists, tour NASA facilities, learn about future deep-space exploration with NASA’s Space Launch System rocket and are encouraged to pursue careers in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
