The web-based period has changed the mindset of individuals at an extraordinary level. The artist that I chose to emulate was Bret Monroy. He is a digital artist who is world renowned for his skills in photoshop and illustrator. Bret has written several book like “The Photoshop WOW Book” and “The Official Adobe Photoshop Handbook” and has many web based tutorials. He started his career in digital art in 1984 with a Macintosh 128 and he thought of the computer an artistic medium. He is probably considered one of the pioneers of the digital art form. He uses his Photoshop skills that he has learned over the years to give his photos the things that he thinks the picture lacks. Such as in his photo “close-up 3” where he took a photo of some iron bars then added in the rust and decay on it. Photoshop has helped define his artwork by being able to give it the detail and color that he is known for.
There are several reasons that I have chosen to emulate him. He shoots a lot of city scape photos that contain a large amount of color and detail, which is something that greatly interests me since my major is architecture. It seems that he shoots HDR photos frequently, which would explain how he gets the detail so crisp and the colors so vivid. That is what I did with my photo to try to get the same detail and color as him. I like his use of lines and symmetry like in the photo “old chair” which makes your eye move throughout the whole photo. It also has such vivid color that it makes the photo stand out and not just another picture of a chair. I tried to recreate his use of lines and symmetry with the lines of the buildings and in the road. I then used Photoshop to make the colors really pop in my photo.
Bret Monroy is truly an amazing artist and photographer and I am happy that I was able to try to recreate one of his photos.

A skeletal, distressed, cut up wooden chair personifies the painful emptiness experienced by victims of eating disorders.
Spilled on the floor are hundreds of intestine-like, blood red, white and blue beaded bracelets, like those sometimes worn by “Pro-Ana” or “Pro-Mia” members. Fueled by the Internet and social media, this disturbing ‘secret society’ trend presents eating disorders as desirable behavior and simply a “lifestyle choice.” Along with virtual communities, these web-based groups provide effective starvation technique tips and post ‘thinspiration’ images of anorexic celebrities and models. They encourage those battling eating disorders to ‘stick with it,’ and can trigger relapse for those in recovery.
Anorexia is the most deadly mental illness. A person with the disease has a dangerously low body weight and thinks about food constantly, but limits the amount eaten to gain a sense of control over their lives. 12% of people who develop anorexia will die from complications. The mortality rate for eating disorders is 12 times higher than that of all other illnesses for females 15-24 years old. 85% of anorexics and bulimics are female, but the incidence in males is growing. Only one in ten people with an eating disorder receives treatment.

The National Railway Museum is proud to present selected photos from the forthcoming web-based gallery, Railway on the Roof of the World, as part of their China 2008 celebrations.
The striking exhibition documents a journey on the Lhasa Railway, an astounding stretch of railway running between ‘mainland’ China and the Autonomous Region of Tibet. The images of the railway, which has had an undisputed effect on the people of both communities, will be hosted on a mini site which can be accessed from the National Railway Museum website from 1st August to December 2008.
