xuanjitu, 2020 (work in progress). Web app (Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, HTML5, and Canvas). Courtesy of the artist.

Project statement from Rory Ou:

xuanjitu is an online, web-based implementation of Xuanji tu(璇玑图), an ancient palindrome poem by Chinese poet Su Hui. "One of the earliest extant poems by a woman—also among the most complex and unsung—the Xuanji tu takes the form of a 29 x 29 character grid, embroidered or woven in five colors in silk, written in classical Chinese in the fourth century." (—Jen Bervin)

As the poem can be read horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, in either direction, there are thousands and thousands of ways through the grid that can form rhyming poems of various line lengths. Plenty of scholars have published books and papers about how to read it, over the thousand+ years since it was created, but mostly in the form of text and printed diagrams to show the paths through the grid.

This app animates those readings proposed by scholars, and (eventually, I hope) will allow visitors to discover new readings of their own.

Demo mode:

The app is still a work in progress. So far, it only has a non-interactive demo mode, where it runs in a continuous loop, about an hour long. The loop consists of over 500 readings (distinct poems) proposed by Michèle Métail in her book Wild Geese Returning: Chinese Reversible Poems (translated by Jody Gladding). For all colors other than red, the loop includes every reading listed in Métail's book (with minor exceptions); for red--which has such a disproportionately large number of possible readings that Métail doesn't list them in the book--the loop contains a sampling of readings that would be valid according to Métail's system.

Pinyin is provided in the sidebar.

Ambition Rockets Past 50% Completion

On May 14, 2010, another step was taken in the development and construction of the National Flight Academy's aircraft carrier Ambition. Upon reaching the 50 percent completion mark, she was visited by two of the National Flight Academy's Board of Advisors, Astronauts Neil Armstrong (Commander, Apollo 11) and Gene Cernan (Commander, Apollo 17) along with RADM George "Skip" Furlong, Jr. These men got a chance to meet firsthand the ship’s pre-commissioning team (NFA staff) and received a quick update on the overall project. Afterwards our guests headed over into the construction site for an in-depth tour.

Our distinguished guests along with NFA Vice-President Elvis toured the Ambition for ninety minutes. There they were able to put one dimensional briefings and two dimensional images into three-dimensional reality and really begin to understand how the NFA vision is quickly becoming reality. Mr. Cernan spoke several times about ways to integrate various teaching components into the training while making sure the training is fun and exciting for our student aviators, and stressed the long-term importance of a robust and engaging alumni program. One item in which Mr. Armstrong took great interest is the need for students to prepare for their NFA adventure by the use of extensive and immersive web-based training. This training, along with a web-based social networking alumni program, will be available to our students before and after they attend their 5 ½ day aviation-inspired learning adventure at the National Flight Academy.

As the National Flight Academy team continues forward on its mission, we took great pride in receiving congratulations and “good job” from both of these American explorers. With Admiral Furlong, we had one of the original visionaries of the National Flight Academy present, who was equally as proud to see the efforts of his hard work coming to fruition.

Photo sharing is a term given to a crop of mid-2000s websites which sharing means to publish a collection of digital photos online in a centralized and organized fashion. The term can be applied to online photo galleries, as well as "photoblogs", i.e. weblogs where the journal entries are prominently centered around original images.

Photoblogging gained momentum in the early 2000s with the advent of the moblog, which provided a highly automated method of entering online journal comments via mobile phone. The introduction of cameraphones in subsequent years added the potential to post a live photograph along with the journal entry.

Not all photo sharing sites are designed to function as photoblog engines, though they usually provide means to add descriptive text for the photo as well as receive comments from other users, effectively providing the same functionality. Some photo sharing sites focus on the images as the sole material to publish, providing such features as categorization "tags", personal image groups, images in multiple sizes, minimal web-based image manipulation, online organization tools, image search, and licensing indication.

Kleeto Road Show at Max Newyork Life Insurance (Gurgaon)

I must begin by stating I did not take this photo and it's not my property. In fact, I found copies of the original at the Web-based military intelligence Wiki at military-intelligence.wikispaces.com. The original version is/was also available at www.tsna.org/photo/index.html.

After further research, I believe the photo credit may belong to a Mr. Mitch Alvins, who previously was assigned to the Reproduction Section, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Military Intelligence Battalion (ARS), Saigon, Republic of Vietnam, from July 1967 to February 1968.

The original version of the photo appears to be a two-part scan of a large B&W panoramic photo. Anyone familiar with the area recognizes this view as a westward-looking perspective of the headquarters for the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV), which was co-located with Tan Son Nhut Air Base — which now is known as Tan Son Nhat (notice the spelling change) International Airport (IATA airport code "SGN").

One potentially important note about this photo: For technical reasons I don't understand, Flickr is limiting the highest resolution available for download to just 1,024 x 476. However, the version I uploaded is actually 1,685 x 784 (1.1 MBytes). If anyone needs or prefers the higher resolution version, I hope you'll drop me a line and I'd be happy to provide it to you.

Changes/Enhancements — The original version of the photo was somewhat unevenly developed, i.e., the shading/exposure of the scanned print was not uniform. Additionally, because it was a panoramic shot, which I presume to have been printed on an unusually large sheet of photographic paper, this apparently necessitated scanning the photo in two sections. Lastly, the print from which this scan was made seemed to have a crease/fold running vertically.

Being a photo hobbyist, and also because I have some interest in the photographed area, I used my modest knowledge of digital photo processing software and made the following enhancements:

(1) I did my best to eradicate any evidence of the vertical crease that had marred the photo.

(2) Other artifacts, apparently introduced by marks on the negative, were artificially eliminated by re-touching.

(3) The unevenness of the exposure was somewhat adjusted.

(4) The two scan sections were combined to appear as the print probably looks, as one contiguous panoramic perspective of the subject area.

(5) Several white-colored annotations were removed, including text indicating the name/location of "MACV, Tan Son Nhut." Two irregular rectangles that apparently had been used to indicate the location of a specific unit or functional area of Tan Son Nhut Air Base were also removed in the enhancement process.

Although I've contacted the Webmaster for the site featuring this Mitch Alvins photo, I'm not sure whether they've endeavored to add this combined version of their two-part photo to their Web site.

Lastly, since there doesn't seem to be many high-quality aerial photos of this area from that period of time, I want to thank the photographer and the photo's owner, whomever they may be, for taking and preserving this rare, high-quality image of this historic landmark which has the interest of many people, particularly military and civilian service veterans of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, personnel assigned to Tan Son Nhut Air Base, and of course, members of the United States Defense Attaché Office, the last tenants of the former MACV Headquarters building.

POWER Organization has celebrated and benefitted from mini-grants through the National Black Family Technology Awareness Week hosted by Career Communications Group/Magazine. We aim to help families understand the possibilities and opportunities that exist with utilizing web-based resources and technology tools to improve academically, professionally, and socially. We collaborate with professionals to share resources, answer questions in a family like atmosphere. Families leave with tools and tips to move them forward confidently and competently!

This is our experience with the WC CUPE family of schools, a very diverse family/educational community in Columbus, Ohio. They had the tools and we helped get the family out to use the tools beyond the school day!

Hajj Flemings (Author and Founder of BrandCampU) was the featured presenter and joined us via Skype (to chat about the power of Skype). Local professionals (including school board members) shared how they utilize technology to enhance their work.

Computers, speakers, head phones, and many more tech tools were a part of the items given away to empower families.

Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber based on Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. “Prologue – Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats” additional material written by Trevor Nunn and Richard Stilgoe; ”Memory” additional material written by Trevor Nunn.

The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year—the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories to Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. Among the candidates are the aging theatre cat, Gus; the rocker, Rum Tum Tugger; and the once-glamorous Grizabella, now but a faded memory of her former self.

Boasting a score that includes Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats, Mr. Mistoffelees and Memory, this compelling fable takes audiences to a fantastical world that can only exist in the theatre. Cats has been performed worldwide and translated into over 20 languages. The original West End production ran for 21 years and the original Broadway production ran for 18 years

Had a training course this morning so was awake at 530am. Stupid bodyclock. Always has to wake me up early...

Anyhow, that was ok, then worked on NEOn at work in the arvo and wrestled with some of the control issues in ASP.NET. Did I mention how un-web-based ASP.NET is? Well, I'll do it again. It sucks. It's not made for web developers, but rather it's made for software developers without the first clue of developing for the web. But that's for another day.

Had my art class tonight, painting with gouche which was rather interesting. Stupid me decides to take on an intricate replica rather than something larger and easier. Idiot. Oh well.

hmmm - tomorrow. What will it bring? I don't know, but c'est la vie!

The deep-pelagic habitat (200 m depth to just above the seabed) is the largest habitat in the Gulf of Mexico, yet we know very little about it compared to coastal and shallow-water habitats. Our limited understanding of this major marine habitat makes it extremely difficult to assess the effects of disturbances such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Travis Richards seeks to better understand the structure of deep-pelagic food webs by tracing the energy flow from the food web base through higher trophic levels. His research will help expand our understanding of the deep-pelagic habitat and serve as a reference point for future studies and response efforts. Travis is a Ph.D. student at Texas A&M University at Galveston’s Marine Biology Department and a GoMRI Scholar with the Deep-Pelagic Nekton Dynamics of the Gulf of Mexico (DEEPEND) consortium.
