I'm starting to feel the inclination to get back into electronics hobbyism these days - and on the photography side that means closeup / macro shots will be coming along soon.
The fever hits me now and then to make some LEDs blink, and the way I generally do that is to write software for a microcontroller (MCU) - a tiny, cheap, single-chip computer - to do it.
Why bother? You might well ask. Well! MCUs form the heart of all sorts of nifty circuitry - anything that isn't actually a computer and yet is "computerized", which is pretty much everything, anymore. I plan to make fun simple things like clocks and little games and decorative blinky lights, but stuff like homemade MP3 players, GPS units, simple autonomous robots, and Web-based remote control devices are now well within the reach of hobbyist designers. All you have to do is get specialized circuitry to handle the GPS reception or MP3 decoding or time displaying, then plunk a MCU down to order it around according to directions specified by software you write.
These three circuits pictured are all "programmers", or interface devices that let you send MCU software from the PC where you wrote it to the actual MCU chip. These are all for the PIC family of chips manufactured by Microchip, Inc.
In the upper left, the venerable PIC-1a from 1996, a small-scale-commercial variant of a famous programmer invented in April 1994 by a hobbyist named David Tait. The "Tait Classic" circuit, as it came to be known, was intended only for one kind of PIC MCU, the surprisingly useful 16C84. It had space for a 1024-instruction program and 36 bytes of data RAM. Much, much more powerful MCUs are available these days for less than the old C84 cost, but it was a great little chip. The Tait programmer made hobbyist MCU programming affordable, I believe; until recently the professional-grade tools for it were very pricey by hobbyist terms. The Tait Classic could be built for a few dollars or ordered pre-assembled from a cottage industry sort of shop like I did for, IIRC, about $50.
In the upper right, a cottage-commercial version of the P16Pro40, which is basically a newer and more flexible version of the Tait Classic, able to handle several different chips. I think I got this one in about 2004.
These two both still work, as far as I know, but they connect to the PC through the parallel port - and modern PCs don't often have parallel ports! Certainly the little netbook I use now doesn't. Hence, my decision to buy the programmer in the bottom of the shot, the Pickit 3. It's a USB-based programmer made by Microchip itself, and it has several features the Tait-types don't - plus it's fairly cheap, as things like this now are (about $70 for the "deluxe" version of the Pickit 3).
Nifty, eh?

TUNE HOTEL WATERFRONT KUCHING GOES BALD FOR 5TH ANNIVERSARY
Proceeds to benefit Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society
KUCHING, 22 March 2014 – To mark its fifth anniversary, Tune Hotel Waterfront Kuching organised a special charity event for the benefit of children with cancer.
Fourteen volunteers went bald at the “Going Bald for Kids with Cancer” at the hotel here on Saturday, as part of the efforts to raise funds for the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS). The event was part of SCCS’s annual ‘Go Bald’ event which is now running into its sixth year. The ‘Go Bald 6.0’ will officially kick off on 4 May 2014 at the CityONE Megamall in Kuching.
Tune Hotel Waterfront Kuching led the way with a donation of RM6,300 to SCCS. As a show of support towards children with cancer and their families, 14 staff members of the hotel had their heads shaved, led by Tune Hotels Country Head for Malaysia, Kishore Suppiah.
To bump it up, Tune Hotel Waterfront Kuching is also pledging RM5 for each online booking made from 22 March up to 28 March 2014 for immediate stays up until 30 April 2014, in addition to a 20 percent discount. Guests can log on to www.tunehotels.com to book and participate.
This is on top of an offline donation drive organised by the hotel staff as well as a donation box placed at the hotel reception. The sums will be tallied and all proceeds will go towards SCCS for the benefit of children with cancer.
Kishore Suppiah said: “This is a very meaningful way to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of Tune Hotel Waterfront Kuching. We are very proud to be working with the SCCS and be part of this year’s Go Bald 6.0 to help support the unfortunate children as well as their families and loved ones. We want to tell them to always be strong, keep on fighting and stay positive… that their hair loss is only temporary and part of the recovery process. After all, being bald is cool!”
SCCS Manager Jodie Sim said: “We are very pleased to have Tune Hotels coming on board for Go Bald 6.0 this year. We hope our Go Bald tour covering Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri this year will be the biggest ever. We look forward to more volunteers and donors who will come forward and participate for this noble cause.”
After Kuching on 4 May, the Go Bald 6.0 tour will stop at Delta Mall in Sibu on 11 May, followed by Parkcity Mall in Bintulu (18 May) and Miri’s Bintang Megamall (25 May).
Go Bald is an awareness cum fundraising event initiated by SCCS in 2009. The funds raised have gone towards providing financial assistance to needy families of a cancer child, accommodation and food for outstation patients, medical consumables, bone marrow transplants and in-ward tuition for the child patients.
SCCS also provides, counselling and emotional support to child patients and families, aside from organising fun outing and camps for them as a temporary getaway from their treatment. For more information, visit SCCS website www.sccs.my or Go Bald Facebook page www.facebook.com/GoBald.

Group CEO of Tune Hotels Mark Lankester said: “We are thrilled with the opening of Tune Hotel klia2 which has already received an overwhelming response and very strong forward bookings from travellers around the region. Through the #RoomerHasIt social media campaign we wanted to introduce and create further awareness of our latest design and fit-out to previous guests as well as the fantastic facilities at klia2, the world’s largest purpose-built airport for low cost carriers. There’s no better way to do that than have them immersed in the hotel itself.”
He said with Tune Hotel klia2, guests now have a superior accommodation option that is not only great value for money but also features improvements to its international-standard offerings. With 400 rooms, the hotel is directly connected to the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) Terminal via a covered walkway and link bridge, allowing easy and more convenient access as well as the Gateway@klia2 shopping mall. “Much has been said about the huge size of the new klia2 Terminal and it is impressively large. By hosting these winners and their guests at the Tune Hotel klia2, we want to illustrate just how convenient it is to have a great sleep or enjoy the services within the hotel while waiting for their next flight, and the convenience of strolling over to the terminal without rushing and with time on your side. Business and leisure guests as well as airline passengers on connecting flight extended waits will enjoy a totally improved experience and most importantly a very comfortable and refreshing stay, with more amenities,” said Lankester.

“As you can see, from klia2 guests and travellers can easily connect and enjoy our hotel service network depending on their preferences and travel purpose. In the heart of KL city they will find the hugely popular Tune Hotel Downtown Kuala Lumpur that is right smack in the centre and in the surroundings we have the Tune Hotel Kota Damansara as well as the soon-to-open Tune Hotel DPulze Cyberjaya, not to mention excellent flight connectivity, direct and indirect, to key cities and destinations in Malaysia and the whole region including Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, India, Japan and even as far as England and Scotland, all destinations where the Tune Hotels network is present,” he added.
Tune Hotels has innovatively transformed the guestroom experience into a modern-style accommodation featuring the all-new room design with a sleek writing table, luggage platform and a 32-inch flat screen LED TV, bringing about an improved, sophisticated but cool ambience throughout the Tune Hotel klia2.

ROVER SYSTEMS - CCTV PHILIPPINES USING CCTVs TO PREVENT CRIME
By Ms. Marlet Salazar (Published June 12, 2013 on Philippine Daily Inquirer, Gadget Section Page 3)
While CCTV (closed-circuit television) has always been a popular tool for solving crimes, it is now gaining use in preventing security problems.
Here in the Philippines, people are now growing to be dependent on CCTVs in solving crimes. In many other countries, though, the priority is using CCTVs as an alarm system to alert people of an impending crime, according to Jonathan Co of Faire Technologies Inc. “Wouldn’t it be more helpful if we can stop a crime from happening,” he asked.
Faire Technologies, one of the largest distributors of professional security surveillance solutions in the country, now highlights the importance of pairing up a CCTV with an alarm systems. Its products are used in retail, commercial, industrial, and government sectors.
The company has been providing security solutions to various establishments, homes, and industries for 18 years now. CCTV is just one of the products in its portfolio. It also carries brands from Israel, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the United States
“We have products that can cater to mid-end to the highest end market,” Co said. “We can supply virtually across all vertical markets depending on the budget of the customer and the complexity of their needs.”
Faire Technologies launched new products from HID, iProteq from Rover Systems, and Optex.
HID Proximity cards and readers can be seamlessly integrated with an access control systems. Some of HID’s innovations with this card eliminating the hassle of looking for the card inside a bag or pocket. As long as the card is with the person, all he/she needs to do is pass the proximity machine to be able to be “read”
The uPass Access is a small UHF reader that reads access badges at a distance of up to two meters or six feet. The ultra-small reader fits on doorpost in any interior and it’s easy to integrate with any type of security systems.
iProteq’s portable wireless alarm control panel is an all-in-one systems with advanced web-based remote programming software. It also has real-time monitoring of iProteq panels and security devices. It can arm and disarm the system from anywhere using a smartphone and web applications.
This system comes with an intelligent digital motion detector. The digital full-area vision is able to distinguish between infrared signals received from a human and those received from an animal.
Optex did a demonstration on Zoo, a fully integrated cost-effective, professional-grade wireless security system. This alarm system has a coverage of up to 12 meters and 90-meters wide. It can also be placed outdoor and its Internet-based operation and surveillance can connect up to 12 cameras on-site
Homeowners or building owners can monitor from wherever they are by just logging on to a website. An alarm system will easily alert the household or the building owners of burglars or criminals who want to enter their establishment
Faire Technologies also carries brand like FlexWatch, Micron, Iotecx, Samsung, Shepeherd, Jablotron, kantech, American Dynamics, Endura, Software House, Secure Link Pro 3, FaceID, and Touch Checker.

Asian Cultural Center of Vermont (ACCVT) presents the second annual Vermont Samurai Kaiju Festival Saturday and Sunday October 24 and 25. This celebration of Japanese pop culture focuses on two genres of Japanese film: samurai (warriors) and kaiju (mysterious beasts.). The events all take place in downtown Brattleboro and are all free admission with suggested donations gratefully accepted by ACCVT a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. More information at the Festival website, www.vermontsamuraikaiju.org.
Events begin Saturday morning the 24th, 9-11:30am at Marlboro College Graduate School, 28 Vernon Street, with a video game contest featuring Godzilla: Unleashed, a 3-D video game. The game is set during a series of disasters and includes alien invaders and more than twenty kaiju. This event, coordinated by Harvey Nystrom and Carlos Schallenberger, also features a buffet brunch sponsored by Brueggers and Riverview Café. (More about Harvey at www.asianculturalcentervt.org/html/contact.htm.) There will also be a table to Mould Your Own Hero (Or Monster) with clay provided by Beth Meachem of Greater Manchester Arts Council. Everyone will treated like a winner. Prizes (certificates thanks to First Run Video) will be drawn like a raffle. Suggested admission for video game contest and brunch $10 per person.
Saturday afternoon the 24th takes place at the Latchis Theatre, 50 Main Street. At 1:20 pm, Dianne Clouet presents Kamishibai, Japanese folktales told with small pictorial panels. Children and adults gather round the mini theatre to hear and watch. More information is available at www.storybike.com. Free public event, donations appreciated.
Saturday the 24th, 2pm at the Latchis, Ultraman, the original series from 1966 will be shown. The creator of Ultraman, Eiji Tsuriburaya, a pioneer in special effects, was the one who also first brought us Godzilla 12 years earlier. As in many of the earlier kaiju films, the monsters in Ultraman were often actors skilled in martial arts who donned enormous costumes. Ultraman comes from a distant nebula and has martial arts moves, light rays and other tools to defend humans, the ability to teleport himself and to move objects by psychokinesis. His one weakness is his rapid loss of his internal solar energy. Suggested donation for admission: $6 for one film, $10 for both films.
Saturday the 24th, 4pm at the Latchis: Love and Honor (Bushi no Ichibun, in Japanese, with subtitles, 2006, 121 minutes) from renowned director Yoji Yamada. The tale comes from one of Japan’s most revered authors of Samurai fiction, Shuhei Fujisawa. The story features a young warrior in feudal Japan who becomes blind and the heroic loyalty of Kayo, his wife. Samurai are the warriors from Japan for hundreds of years up to the 19th century, but their way of life continues to offer timeless and relevant lessons for today. Samurai code of conduct and values include loyalty and sincerity, stoicism and thrift, self-control and self-reliance, finesse and timing. Suggested donation for admission: $6 for one film, $10 for both films.
Saturday the 25th features a double bill: Gamera the Invincible (1965, 80 minutes) at 2pm and Gamera the Brave (2006, 96 minutes) at 4pm.
In between the two Gamera films, there will be Mould your Own Hero (or Monster) out of clay at a table in the Latchis lobby. Also during the Intermission and before the films, Sean Hartter, creator and donor of the Festival poster series, will be available to autograph the 11x17" posters which will be available for $16 each, $72 for the set of 5,as a fundraiser for the 501(c)(3) non-profit ACCVT. The first fifty people who make a poster purchase will also receive a 4x6 samurai- or kaiju-themed drawing in the in pencil and sharpie on sketchcard by Sean Hartter.
Kaiju or daikaiju is the genre name of films popularized in Japan that are about giant monsters. The word, kaiju, actually means ‘mysterious beast’ in Japanese. Kaiju are typically modeled after conventional animals, insects or mythological creatures. The kaiju genre of Japanese cinema grew from the mid 1950s. Godzilla and other monstrous creatures endanger or save the world and sometimes both in the same movie. In this Brattleboro festival, Two Gamera films will be featured in a double bill Sunday the 25th at 2pm and 4pm.
Putting monsters and warriors together in the same festival celebrates Japanese arts and culture and provides insights into today’s human condition. There is also a connection between art, fictionalized destruction in the kaiju films and dealing with the memories of actual devastation in wartime. Asian Cultural Center of Vermont (ACCVT) is hosting an ongoing exhibit of exquisite rare fabric collage artworks created by young women survivors of the 1940s Hiroshima devastation. The art making was a chance to provide the students with some normalcy in otherwise shattered lives. The kaiju genre took off in Japan in the ‘50s and provided an outlet for people to identify with grief over the devastation and loss, a chance to get in touch with collective grieving.
Events are for all ages. Although the films are rated for general audiences, parents should decide if the monsters in the films might make their children uncomfortable. All Festival films are matinees and show at the Latchis in the wheelchair accessible Ballroom Theatre, upstairs from the main theatre.
Festival events at The Latchis are free admission thanks to the generosity of sponsors, with suggested pay-as-you-wish donations per person greatly appreciated by ACCVT of $6 per film or $10 per matinee double feature or $10 for the Video Game Contest and Brunch.
These events are made possible through a grant from the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment of the Arts and through the generosity of the Latchis; Darren Goldsmith, Theatre Manager; Marlboro College Graduate School; the Grad Center’s Kelly Fletcher and Kathy Urffer, and the film distributors: Media-Blasters, Mill Creek Entertainment, and Funimation. Also thanks to Steve Bissette at Center for Cartoon Studies and Tony Drapelick at S.I.T./World Learning for promoting the event, and especially to Sean Hartter for donating the amazing poster graphics for the Festival. Thanks also to media sponsors Brattleboro’s Reformer, WKVT and WTSA, and Boston’s Artscope Magazine, and to Vermont Artisan Designs for their ongoing support, and to Steev Lynn, Harry Van Baaren of hvbimaging.com, Alec Silver and Leah Silver for their work on the 30-second youtube video-radio spot which be viewed on the Festival website, vermontsamuraikaiju.org, Zinn Graphics in West Brattleboro for printing the posters and Kadin Maile for the Wii controllers for the Video Game Contest.
Asian Cultural Center of Vermont (ACCVT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational resources organization based in Brattleboro, VT, and online at www.asianculturalcentervt.org Brattleboro that connects people and institutions through the arts and cultures of Asia by promoting and coordinating festivals, forums, films, exhibitions, presentations, training and workshops, and classes to the public for all ages and with a web-based resource on regional Asian culture events.

Tantalum Memorial
Harwood, Wright und Yokokoji
uk, 2008
WINNER OF THE TRANSMEDIALE.09 AWARD
Jury Statement:
"Profound and dense, this work will be remade for transmediale after showings in 2008 in San Jose at 0l and in Italy at Manifesta7. It has been nominated for its quality of execution, density of imagination as well as conceptual and metaphorical strengths. It operates on many levels – casting light on the memory of the more than three million people who have died in wars in the Congo over the last ten years—through the use of telephony combined with computation. A rack of electromagnetic Strowger telephony switches is triggered by a computer that tracks calls from the 'Telephone Trottoire,' a 'social telephony' network designed for an international Congolese diaspora. This project builds on the Congolese practice of 'radio trottoire' – passing news and hearsay on street corners by word-of-mouth to avoid state control. Its imaginative breadth and its integration of socio-political objectives were seen by the jury as exceptional. The artists have established a substantial track record in engaging with subjects that impact us globally but are initially manifested locally, and their work is well-deserving of acknowledgement within transmediale 09."

Man With A Movie Camera: The Global Remake
Perry Bard (2008)
The video artist Perry Bard invites people to a collaborative web-based, database-generated montage experiment. Using Dziga Vertovs masterpiece from 1929 as direct inspiration, participants from all over the world can upload footage on the website next to the corresponding scenes from the original film. Uploaded digital media from photo cameras, video recorders and screen-grabs form part of the new interpretation. The lengths and images of submitted videos are synchronised with the original scenes through software, which then rotates the added material every day, ensuring the film may never be the same twice. Bard’s project transports Vertov’s impressions about the Soviet cities in his experimental silent film into the 21st century and becomes, in Vertov’s terms, the “decoding of life as it is.”.

THE MAJESTIC THEATRE
The Majestic Theatre was built in 1927 by real-estate magnates, the Chanin Brothers as part of a three-theatre complex that also included the Royale (a mid-sized house) and the Theatre Masque, now the John Golden (a small house), the Majestic, a large musical house, complemented the other two venues, enabling producers to move shows based on their ticket sales to the most appropriately-sized venue.
Herbert Krapp designed the theatre complex in what he called a “modern Spanish” style, complete with terra-cotta base and Spanish brick-wall ornamentation, and arched windows. The Majestic's exterior also includes a stylized Palladian motif above the entrance.
The interior features the Adam-style detailing common in many Shubert houses. Decades before the current vogue for stadium seating in movie theaters, Krapp had conceived of a similar concept for the theatre's orchestra. With its steep rake, it offers ideal sight lines for audience members.
Another forward-thinking aspect of the design was the creation of a single large balcony rather than two smaller ones—today’s producers are hesitant to book two-balcony houses because second-balcony seating is less desirable to modern audiences.
In 1930, the Chanins transferred ownership of all three houses to the Shuberts.

NEWS RELEASE
TUNE HOTEL MELBOURNE OFFICIALLY OPENS!
AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND BECKON
First hotel in Australia officially opened by Premier Denis Napthine
MELBOURNE, 8 November 2013 – International value hotel group Tune Hotels has stamped its first footprint in Australia with the official opening of the Tune Hotel Melbourne. The Group has plans to expand this footprint within the Australasia region and Melbourne will be its operational hub.
The 225-room property was officially launched today during a ceremony attended by Premier of Victoria Dr Denis Napthine, Malaysia’s Consul-General in Melbourne Datuk Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya and Group CEO of Tune Hotels Mark Lankester.
Premier Napthine said: “Tune Hotels Group’s decision to open its first Australian hotel and base its operations here in Melbourne will create more than 100 direct and indirect local jobs. This decision by Tune Hotels Group is a major vote of confidence in Victoria and our economy. Tune Hotel Melbourne brings a new model of accommodation to Australia, and I am very proud that Melbourne is at the forefront of this new tourism concept. As Australia's events capital, Melbourne offers visitors access to world-class sporting and cultural events.”
The official opening came just a couple of days after Melbourne’s biggest social event, the Melbourne Cup Spring Racing Carnival on Tuesday. Tune Hotel Melbourne had soft-opened for business on 21 October, two weeks ahead of its 1 November scheduled date and celebrated that with a super low launch rate of just A$50 a night - one of the most affordable room rates seen in central Melbourne for years!
Located at 609 Swanston Street, Carlton, Melbourne, Tune Hotel Melbourne is conveniently located next to the University of Melbourne and a stroll to RMIT University, just two streets away from the popular eateries of Lygon Street, around the corner from Queen Victoria Market and minutes to Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD) via the trams which stop outside the hotel.
The hotel features an indoor open air courtyard, a recreational lounge, a restaurant, café, luggage storage, self-service launderette and free Internet desks on the ground floor. In addition the hotel is equipped with basement car parks - something unusual for city centre hotels in Australia.
Melbourne will also be the location for Tune Hotels’ operational headquarters overseeing Australia and New Zealand operations, working in conjunction with the corporate office in Kuala Lumpur and creating up to 100 jobs.
“We are very excited to have finally established our first hotel in Australia right here in Melbourne, giving business and leisure visitors to this amazing city a truly compelling choice of accommodation alternative. As Australia’s events capital, Melbourne is a great market for Tune Hotels, as it boasts a rich calendar of theatre, sporting and arts and cultural events, and we have experienced strong forward bookings since announcing our entry into the market in June,” Lankester said.
“We would like to thank the Victorian Government, Tourism Victoria, Tourism Australia as well as the City of Melbourne for their invaluable and continued support of Tune Hotels. Given our long term plans for this region, the Tune Hotel Melbourne is just the beginning for what we have planned for the Tune Hotels concept in Australia and New Zealand and travellers can expect to see more hotels opening in the region in the coming years.”
Tune Hotel Melbourne is the 34th property for Tune Hotels, which has pioneered a “pay-as-you-use” concept that has become hugely popular among smart travellers from across the world. Under the concept, guests only pay for room rates with the option of adding on other amenities like towels and toiletries, in-room Wi-Fi and satellite TV service to keep costs down, reduce waste and save energy.
Apart from Tune Hotel Melbourne, the group has eleven hotels in operation and available for booking in in Malaysia, eight in the Philippines, six in Indonesia, five in the UK, four in Thailand and one each in India and Japan.
Tune Hotels provides international-class high-quality accommodation at central locations and focuses on key essentials but minus the generally underused facilities found in other hotels such as swimming pools, business centres and gymnasiums. By doing away with these costly and high-maintenance facilities, Tune Hotels is able to pass on savings to its guests in the form of super low room rates.
All Tune Hotels feature space-efficient, streamlined rooms focusing on high-quality basics: 5-star beds and powerful hot showers. The strategically located hotels provide housekeeping services, electronic keycard access into rooms, extensive CCTV systems, and no access into the main lobby without a keycard past midnight for extra security.
Tune Hotels is part of Tune Group, a lifestyle business conglomerate co-founded by Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and Dato’ Kamarudin Meranun, who are the Group CEO and Executive Chairman respectively of Asia’s largest low cost carrier AirAsia.

Mayor of the City of Manila Alfredo S Lim did the honours by officially opening Tune Hotels’ first Manila hotel in Ermita recently. Located in Central Manila, Tune Hotel Ermita offers 167 rooms comprising 117 double, 48 twin sharing and 2 wheelchair-friendly rooms.
Group CEO of Tune Hotels, Mark Lankester said: “We are very excited with the opening of Tune Hotel Ermita, our very first hotel in the capital city. MALAYSIA’S LARGEST GREEN HOTEL OFFICIALLY OPENS
GBI Gold-Certified Tune Hotel klia2 made an energy-efficiency demonstration project for Malaysian building sector
SEPANG, 25 June 2014 – The newly-opened Tune Hotel klia2 here has received a double recognition for its green technology and energy-efficient features.
Beyond the conventional green products of LED lights and energy-efficient equipment, Tune Hotels has taken its green initiative further by employing a holistic sustainability agenda driven into its building design right from the beginning.
The hotel has been awarded a provisional Gold Rating by the Green Building Index (GBI) Accreditation Panel and subsequently submitted as the first demonstration project under the Building Sector Energy Efficiency Project (BSEEP), a national project implemented by the Public Works Department Malaysia in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and co-funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). BSEEP has for its goal the reduction in the annual growth rate of emissions from buildings in Malaysia by promoting energy conserving designs of new buildings.
Tune Hotel klia2 was officially opened today by the Deputy Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Mahdzir Khalid.
Deputy Minister Dato’ Seri Mahdzir Khalid said: “I am very pleased to be here today to witness a very local homegrown brand making giant efforts in embracing the usage of energy and water efficiency, as well as green technology. Today, the need to care for our environment has never been more crucial. It is no longer a ‘special interest’ but a mission entrusted upon all of us to save our only planet we have got from environmental degradation. It is part of the Government’s objective to accelerate the national economy and promote sustainable development through efficient energy use. We want to improve the quality of life for Malaysians, increase national economic development by means of technology and safeguard the integrity of the environment.”
At the event, the Deputy Minister also presented the Gold GBI certification to Mark Lankester who received it on behalf of Tune Hotel klia2. GBI was represented by its Chairman Ar. Von Kok Leong.
Mark Lankester said: “We are elated with these recognitions. To be the largest hotel to be GBI Gold-certified is a fantastic accomplishment for our Projects team while as an ongoing BSEEP national demonstration project, we are very pleased to showcase how energy-efficient buildings can be operationally very cost effective, and most importantly benefit the bottom line of the business. As we have always said, being more cost effective allows us to pass on benefits to our guests.”
“Nonetheless, the comfort of our guests was our overriding priority when in the design stage for the Tune Hotel klia2. Great emphasis was given on the indoor environment quality, thermal comfort, lighting levels and luminosity, noise control, air quality and daylight availability, on top of energy and water efficiency, amongst many others,” added Lankester.
The construction of the Tune Hotel klia2 has demonstrated various key aspects of energy efficiency in buildings, providing unparalleled opportunities for both government and private sector practitioners in gaining practical information as a result of implementing energy-efficient building projects.
As a BSEEP demonstration project, Tune Hotel klia2 will provide real-time data to illustrate and improve confidence in the feasibility, performance, energy, environmental and economic benefits of energy-efficient building technology applications. It is intended to be an example in supporting the design and construction of other real-life energy efficient buildings.
Faber Group Berhad, through its subsidiary Faber Facilities Sdn Bhd, provided Environmental and Sustainable Design (ESD) Consultancy for the project.
Azmir Merican, Executive Director of Faber Group said, “The benefits of going green for hotels and resorts are obvious for the move would translate into savings in energy and water usage. More importantly though it reflects the proprietor’s commitment towards a sustainable future. With the increase awareness of ESD concept, we hope that more building owners in Malaysia will implement a green strategy and adopt the technology in reducing their carbon footprint.”
On the implementation of ESD for Tune Hotel klia2, Azmir said that during the design stage, extensive simulations were carried out to ensure the Tune Hotel klia2 is energy efficient with a projected Building Energy Intensity (BEI) index of 159KWh/m2/yr.
In Malaysia, the BEI benchmark for similar performance rating is at 200KWH/m2/yr for ‘up to 3-star’ hotels and 290KWh/m2/yr for ‘4-star and above’ hotel categories while the BSEEP benchmark is 187KWh/m2/yr. In comparison to the Australian hotel industry benchmarked ‘best practice’ performance indicator is 208KWh/m2 for accommodation hotels and 292 KWh/m2 for business hotels.
Another key highlight of Tune Hotel klia2 is water efficiency which is estimated at more than 40% water savings compared to a conventionally designed hotel building. This is attributed mainly towards the use of harvested rainwater for the water closet (WC), cleaning and irrigation purposes.
Landscape plant selection also played a key role in that, only native or locally adaptive plants which required minimal or almost no irrigation was planted. Notably, the landscape provision for this project exceeded the local authority requirements by 154%.
The 400-room Tune Hotel klia2 opened for business on 9 May 2014. The hotel is directly connected to the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) terminal via a covered walkway and link bridge, allowing easy and convenient access to check-in counters as well as the Gateway@klia2 shopping mall.
To add to the guest experience and comfort, the hotel’s spacious lobby features a cool casual seating lounge with free wifi and an expansive open-air courtyard lounge, overlooked by a 24-hour restaurant and beverage centre. For guests with further transportation needs, the hotel includes a transport counter for overland transport needs and for flights, two AirAsia self check-in kiosks and klia2’s flight information displays are provided within the lobby for added convenience to hotel guests.
Guests at Tune Hotel klia2 enjoy great connectivity to the Kuala Lumpur city and its surrounding suburbs as the klia2 Terminal boasts not only bus and taxi services but also the Express Rail Link (ERL) train service that connects to and from Kuala Lumpur Sentral. For guests arriving at or departing from the KLIA Main Terminal, they can make use of the scheduled shuttle service via the ERL that costs just RM2 one way and stroll over to the hotel via its covered link bridge.
The hotel also features 167 parking bays which are conveniently located just a few steps away from the airport terminal. A portion of the parking area has been allocated exclusively for green, electric and hybrid vehicles.
With a projected annual capacity of 45 million passengers, the klia2 is the world's largest purpose-built terminal dedicated for low cost carriers (LCCs). The new airport commenced commercial operations on 2 May 2014.

This musical phenomenon comes to Theatr Clwyd for the first time thanks to Tip Top Productions.
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber based on Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. “Prologue – Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats” additional material written by Trevor Nunn and Richard Stilgoe; ”Memory” additional material written by Trevor Nunn.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year—the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories to Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life. Among the candidates are the aging theatre cat, Gus; the rocker, Rum Tum Tugger; and the once-glamorous Grizabella, now but a faded memory of her former self.
Boasting a score that includes Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats, Mr. Mistoffelees and Memory, this compelling fable takes audiences to a fantastical world that can only exist in the theatre. Cats has been performed worldwide and translated into over 20 languages. The original West End production ran for 21 years and the original Broadway production ran for 18 years

JAKARTA WELCOMES ITS FIRST TUNE HOTEL
Value branded hotel chain continues its expansion in Indonesia
Jakarta, 3 September 2012 – Tune Hotels, the global branded value hotel chain, continues to expand in Indonesia with the opening of its latest hotel in Pasar Baru, Jakarta. Tune Hotel Pasar Baru would represent the global brand’s third property in Indonesia, (following Tune Hotel Kuta and Legian in Bali) and the first hotel in central Jakarta, offering world-class accommodation at extremely affordable rates, providing the essentials for a good night’s sleep. Tune Hotel Pasar Baru has 168 rooms in total, 125 Doubles, 42 Twin-sharing and a special needs room. The opening of Tune Hotel Pasar Baru was attended by popular Indonesian celebrities Nicholas Saputra and Izabel Jahja.
The expansion of the Tune Hotel brand in Indonesia is spurred by the country’s strong economy, rising number of tourists and favorable business environment. Jakarta is one of the largest cities in the world and ranked third after Bali and Sulawesi recording the highest hotel room occupancy in Indonesia according to the Statistics Indonesia of the Republic Indonesia. Pasar Baru is one of Jakarta’s most popular tourist destination and its central location is also ideal for business activities. Known for its shopping experience, visitors can “go back in time” to take in the beauty of its Dutch influenced colonial and Chinese architecture of its buildings as one strolls along the coble stone streets.
According to Mark Lankester, Group CEO of Tune Hotels, “Jakarta represents a gateway for leisure travellers more often as a stop-over before continuing their journey to other popular destinations such as Bali, Medan, Yogyakarta and Surabaya. Nevertheless Jakarta also serves as a central business destination drawing frequent business travellers from the South East Asian region and domestically within Indonesia as well. Hence, the opening of Tune Hotel Pasar Baru would cater to the needs of leisure and business travellers looking for convenient, comfortable and value-for-money accommodation. “
Lankester added that more expansion plans are on the way for the Tune Hotel brand in Indonesia which includes Pekan Baru, Makassar, Solo, Palembang and Surabaya. The vast country of sprawling archipelago has much to offer; from natural beauty, historical heritage to cultural diversity. Moreover, statistics from the Travel and Tourism Competitive Index (TTCI) in 2011 ranks Indonesia as the thirteenth most attractive destination in the Asia-Pacific to commence travel and tourism business operations.
Other Tune Hotel properties in Indonesia are located in Kuta and Legian, Bali which have been a favourite among visitors to Bali. The hotels’ popularity was recognized when it was named among the Top 20 Indonesia Innovative Brands of 2011 by Indonesia’s leading marketing industry magazine, MIX. It was Tune Hotels' innovativeness to its ability to serve the practical needs of tourists by giving them the best value that garnered the attention and illustrated by Legian and Kuta hotels being ranked #3 and #7 Best Value Hotels in Bali on TripAdvisor. Tune Hotels was selected along with other global leading brands to be named on the list and the only Malaysian-originated brand.
Red Planet Hotels owns and operates the Tune Hotel Pasar Baru in close association with Tune Hotel and its Chief Executive Officer, Tim Hansing, said that this hotel was the first of many more to come in Indonesia from Red Planet as the Tune brand expands across the country.
“This is the first hotel of eight more we have under construction in Indonesia and we will have some exciting announcements about more sites we are in the midst of acquiring. We are making some significant investments in Indonesia in the budget hotel sector as we have full confidence in the potential of Indonesia and the Indonesian travel sector to grow this market” said Hansing.
Tune Hotels currently has eleven hotels in Malaysia, four in LondonUnited Kingdom, four in The Philippines and two in Thailand. Hotels in Malaysia are located in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, KLIA-LCCT Airport, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Johor Bahru, Kota Damansara, Bintulu, Kota Bharu, Kulim and Ipoh.
Hotels in Asia includes Hat Yai and Pattaya in Thailand; Angeles City, Cebu City, Ermita and Makati, Manila in The Philippines; Kuta and Legian in Bali and Pasar Baru, Jakarta in Indonesia; Westminster, Liverpool Street, Paddington and Kings Cross in London, UK. Under the concept, guests only pay for room rates with the option of adding on other amenities like towels & toiletries, air-conditioning, in-room Wifi and satellite TV service at selected hotels.
Calling on guests to stay connected with Tune Hotels via the social media networks Facebook and Twitter, Mark Lankester, says “More Tune Hotels are scheduled for opening in Asean, the UK, India and Australia, that will give our guests even more options for travel destinations. We encourage guests to stay tuned for Tune Hotels’ latest openings and promotions via Facebook and Twitter.”

The winners of the Apps4Africa East Africa contest were announced January 14 at the Villages in Action Conference in Masindi, Uganda. Embassy Kampala Information Officer Elise Crane attended the conference and discussed State’s role in supporting technology-related initiatives including Apps4Africa, a regional competition for the development of web-based and mobile applications that address local climate change challenges. The contest built on the outcomes of a regional “climate-smart” agriculture workshop organized by the Adaptation Partnership, which includes the United States and more than 20 other countries. The grand prize was awarded to “The Grainy Bunch,” a team in Tanzania that is developing a system for monitoring the grain supply chain, so that grain producers, distributors, and consumers can adapt to climate-induced stresses. Uganda came in third place with Agro Universe, a mobile and web-based app from Uganda that creates a regional marketplace, helping communities prepare for pest- and drought-induced food shortages by linking these communities to farmers with available produce. This competition demonstrates that the United States is working with partners to bring together practitioners, policy-makers, and African technology innovators through programs such as the global Adaptation Partnership and Apps4Africa in order to highlight country-driven solutions to climate change adaptation in East Africa.
Apps4Africa: Climate Challenge consists of three African regional competitions. Winners from the West and Central Africa contest were announced in December, and winners from the Southern Africa competition will be announced in April.

Tune Hotels has successfully pioneered a branded value hotel brand with the concept of pay-as-you-use that has become hugely popular amongst travelers from across the world.

“‘Vastitude’ explores concepts of ‘vastness’. Its simple architectural form hosts multidimensional displays that respond in real time to web-based interactions by users.
“The exterior of ‘Vastitude’ is a simple rectangular structure that hosts a complex three-dimensional grid of LED lights suspended inside parallel mirrors, creating the illusion of a deep, vast ‘field of lights’.
“Users interact with the installation in real-time through a dedicated social media portal. When users direct their posts to the installation system, it will translate the user’s post into values that control the colour, speed and type of animation that will be displayed.
“The choices for input are infinite, and users are encouraged to explore the ways that different inputs are translated as creative effects when processed by the installation.
“The result is a representation of the vastness of space, the endless variation of cultural expression and the ready availability of vast data resources.
“The team of artists who created ‘Vastitude’ is made up of passionate computational designers working in the architecture industry. Their aim is to create an architectural design piece that is elegantly interactive and allows for the largest possible diversity of inputs.
“Visitors viewing the installation should look to rolling text at the top of the structure where they can learn more about its possibilities and also obtain an indication of who is currently affecting ‘Vastitude’.”

On top of that, he said, guests at Tune Hotel klia2 enjoy great connectivity to KL city and its surrounding suburbs as the klia2 Terminal boasts not only bus and taxi services but also the Express Rail Link (ERL) train service that connects to and from Kuala Lumpur Sentral.

MUSICAL SERIES STARRING SLEEQ DUO TO AIR FRIDAY
Collaboration to further connect with youth market, says Tune Hotels
KUALA LUMPUR, 23 January 2014 – ‘Sleeq & Friends’, the latest musical TV drama production by Excellent Pictures starring popular hip-hop duo, Alif Abdullah (Alyph Sleeq) and Ahmad Syarifullah (Syarif Sleeq) is set to debut on RTM’s TVi channel (Astro 180) this Friday 24 January at 9 pm.
The 30-minute, 13-episode series chronicles the many trials and tribulations faced by Alyph and Syarif since the day they formed Sleeq in Singapore and the success they built thereon.
‘Sleeq & Friends’ was directed by Khalid Nadzri and co-starred up-and-coming names as well as senior actors including Puteri Chichi, Mimie Haris, Naque, Qazem Nor, Ayda Jebat, Arash Mohd, Zack Kool and Emma Akma.
Meanwhile, for international value hotel network Tune Hotels, its collaboration as the accommodation sponsor for the production of the musical series is a natural fit in connecting with youths.
Group CEO of Tune Hotels, Mark Lankester said: “We are very pleased to be working with Excellent Pictures and the Sleeq duo on this project. Through ‘Sleeq & Friends’ we look forward to further building Tune Hotels to be the preferred hotel brand for all Malaysians.”
A launch and preview event for ‘Sleeq & Friends’ was held at the Tune Hotel Downtown Kuala Lumpur here today. Celebrating with Sleeq’s Alyph and Syarif were Tune Hotels Country Manager for Malaysia Kishore Suppiah and the director of ‘Sleeq & Friends’ Khalid Nadzri.
‘Sleeq & Friends’ co-stars were also present in a show of support.
Formed in 2005 by cousins Alyph and Syarif at their tender age of 16, Sleeq is out to introduce and push their fresh musical flavour, which blends melodious soulful hooks with polished urban beats.
Sleeq released an EP ‘In the Q’ in 2007 which saw four out of the nine tracks featured hitting the radio charts. In 2009, they released their second album entitled ‘Classiq’, and since then has been getting appreciation from both the fans and industry. More recently in 2013, they decided to move to Malaysia to pursue music full-time under the management of Aaron Aziz Productions.
Tune Hotels has successfully pioneered the “pay-as-you-use” concept that has become hugely popular among smart travellers from across the world. Under the concept, guests only pay for room rates with the option of adding on other amenities like air-conditioning, towels and toiletries, in-room Wi-Fi and satellite TV service to keep costs down, reduce waste and save energy.

TUNE HOTELS CELEBRATES NEW YEAR 2014 WITH OPENING OF NEW HOTELS IN PHILIPPINES, INDONESIA
KUALA LUMPUR, 19 December 2013 – International value hotel group Tune Hotels is celebrating the arrival of the New Year 2014 with the opening of two new properties – Tune Hotel Davao in the Philippines and Tune Hotel Bekasi in Indonesia.
The 155-room Tune Hotel Davao, located at J.P. Laurel Avenue in Davao City, the Philippines welcomed its first guests on Tuesday 17 December 2013 while Tune Hotel Bekasi, with 157 rooms and located at Blu Plaza, Jl. Chairil Anwar 27-36 in Bekasi Timur, Indonesia opened for business Thursday 19 December 2013.
Mark Lankester, Group CEO of Tune Hotels said: “What a celebration! We have two hotels opening just days apart in two of the most vibrant economies in Asean and this surely is a big cause to celebrate for Tune Hotels. Both Indonesia and Philippines are great markets for us and our rapid expansion in both countries signifies their importance.”
Tune Hotels now has seven hotels in operation in the Philippines and six in Indonesia.
“2013 has been a great year for us. To recap, including the newly-opened Tune Hotel Davao and Tune Hotel Bekasi, we have launched three new hotels each in the Philippines and Indonesia this year alone. By early 2014, three more are coming up in Indonesia and another in the Philippines, and these underscore our plans for the two countries” shared Mark.
Elsewhere, Tune Hotels has 11 hotels in operation in Malaysia, four in Thailand, five in the UK and one each in Australia, India and Japan. It has a total of 40 hotels available for booking on its website www.tunehotels.com.
“Over five million guests have stayed with Tune Hotels and we look forward to welcoming more visitors and tourists by providing them international standard accommodation at highly affordable rates,” he added.
Tune Hotels has pioneered a “pay-as-you-use” concept that has become hugely popular among smart travellers from across the world. Under the concept, guests only pay for room rates with the option of adding on other amenities like air-conditioning, towels and toiletries, in-room Wi-Fi and satellite TV service to keep costs down, reduce waste and save energy.
Tune Hotels is part of Tune Group, a lifestyle business conglomerate co-founded by Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, who are the Group CEO and Executive Chairman respectively of Asia’s largest low cost carrier AirAsia.

TUNE HOTEL AHMEDABAD IS NOW OPEN
Green concept resonates amongst guests in India
AHMEDABAD, 15 May 2013 – Tune Hotels' maiden Indian property located in Ahmedabad today opens its doors, with guests welcoming new standards of hospitality from the award-winning international hotel chain.
The 100-room Tune Hotel Ahmedabad received its first guests, many of whom took advantage of its pre-opening promotional room rates that started from 599 Indian rupees ($11).
“The Tune Hotel Ahmedabad is our first opportunity to present our services to India’s vibrant and vast hospitality market. Our excellent amenities combine with top-class environment-friendly practices and we are encouraged with the response from our guests. It is heartening to note that guests have liked our eco-friendly character,” said Mark Lankester, Group CEO of Tune Hotels.
With the opening of Tune Hotel Ahmedabad, there are now 29 Tune Hotels in operation globally. The rest are 11 in Malaysia, five in the UK, four in the Philippines, four in Thailand and four in Indonesia.
The Tune Hotel Ahmedabad, annexed to the newly-developed 4D Square Mall in the city’s Motera area, is well-positioned on the main thoroughfare to the state capital of Gandhinagar and a stone’s throw away from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Patel cricket stadium.
“We welcome both business and leisure travellers. In order to serve families, an important segment in India, we have specially-designed large rooms that can accommodate four to six people. All our guest rooms come with our standard features designed to ensure a comfortable stay at affordable prices. At Tune Hotels, we keep the prices competitive by giving guests the option to choose and pay only for amenities that they require,” Lankester said.
The Tune Hotel Ahmedabad is looking to serve both domestic travellers and visitors from abroad, especially members of the large non-resident Indian (NRI) community from Gujarat settled in places like the US, Britain and the Gulf.
Tune Hotels will have five to six hotels in Gujarat as part of the company’s 20 planned hotels across India in the next three years.
“We are keen to reinforce our environmental-friendly practices while we build our business in India. We want our guests to be part of these eco practices and be aware of our systems and technologies that are compatible with our green standards. Our business philosophy is to strive to remain locally-relevant in each and every community we are in. This includes being responsible towards the local environment,” Lankester said.
“For us at Tune Hotels, being environment-friendly is not a slogan. Using resources in a way that reduces waste and promotes healthy lifestyles is built in our daily operations whether it is saving energy or minimising waste.”
Providing international-standard, high quality accommodation by focusing on key essentials but minus the generally underutilised facilities commonly found in other hotels such as swimming pools, business centres and gymnasiums, Tune Hotels keeps its operating costs low and savings are passed on to guests in the form of super low rates.
Apart from properties in major cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai – Tune Hotels is focusing on Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities along with hotels in the tourist triangle destinations of Agra, Jaipur and Delhi.
By the end of 2013, Tune Hotels will have operating hotels in eight countries. Apart from India, Tune Hotels is set to open properties in Japan and Australia this year. Future projects are also coming up in the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
Tune Hotels has received over four million guests since the opening of its first hotel in Downtown Kuala Lumpur in 2007.
Tune Hotels is part of Tune Group, a lifestyle business conglomerate co-founded by Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and Dato’ Kamarudin Meranun, who are the Group Chief Executive Officer and Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer respectively of Asia’s largest low cost carrier AirAsia.
