Many interpretations come to mind when walking along the seawall at Beppu and admiring the sleek modern vessels. From a design point of view a lot of thinking, style and research/testing goes into the final form before the owner first ventures onto the open water. From a history point of view there has long been a relationship between people and the sea, so this modern situation is part of a long line before and a long line that will come after this moment. From a sociological and economic point of view this is a visual representation of the divide between "haves and have nots," those who own (or at least view themselves as able to afford to buy and maintain) and those who do not. And from a seasonal point of view, November is not the peak season of the summer months, but there are still fine (although short on daylight hours) days to sail or motor around Beppu Bay and to more distant destinations. From an international comparative point of view, for a city of 120,000 in another G-7 country maybe a port city would host even more luxury and semi-luxury boats than this, suggesting that the gap between rich and poor in Japan is relatively smaller than other parts of the industrialized world of wealth accumulation.
