Skirting the mostly frozen pond discovered by following the moose tracks through the forest (moose tracks or rabbit tracks? Our party couldn't settle on a clear verdict), Canadian National's L53981 21--the local to L'Anse--nears Champion, MI, amidst a plethora of pristine winter wilderness enhanced by a light precipitation of powder. It's a long, slow journey to L'Anse, gingerly treading nearly 50 miles from the yard at Ishpeming on two roughly parallel, poorly-surfaced steel strips laid down for the DSS&A, never once exceeding an agonizing 10 mph over the 5-hour-plus trip. This is the Upper Peninsula, rugged and remote--the train will pass through almost nothing that qualifies as a population center at any point between origin and destination.
Alas, here we have another image suffering from quality and processing shortfalls due to the new camera capturing images in jpeg format instead of raw, consequences from a simple yet unfortunate oversight during the camera's initial setup. Manageable perhaps, but by no means perfect.

My son and I had a fantastic time fly fishing in the scenic mountains of Montana. We fished numerous rivers and streams on the trip, from small headwater streams like this to huge rivers and each stop had its own special charm. The trout in these headwater streams are quite small since the streams are very tiny and there's not much food for them to eat in this cold and rather inhospitable climate. The one exception is when you can find a meadow section filled with willow trees where the stream flow levels out for a spell and beavers build dams and lodges to live. These areas are home to more insects and many more trout and you can have great fun if you know how to catch them. It takes a lot of effort to reach an area like this but then it's like living in heaven for a short time here.

The green (what we usually expect if someone says, "look at that moss,") is the gametophyte phase of this moss. The plants make eggs, and sperm, that fertilizes the egg. Then, if all goes well, a non-green structure, the sporophyte, grows from the fertilized egg. Each sporophyte has a capsule on its end, and spores are grown there, then released, and washed or blown to another occasion.
This entire assembly was (and most likely still is) growing on a downed tree trunk.

We found this guy while visiting the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins in Belize. After learning so much about the Ruins and finding iguanas, we went cave tubing, it was so fun. I only have cell phone photos of the cave tubing, but I might post something.

We are on a red buggy pulled by Marshmallow, our little Haflinger. A lot of my shots are taken from here - thank goodness for in camera image stabilization by Olympus that does a fantastic job. I also use a little monopod to give a little more stability and perspective. I hate that Roy "roached" her mane. I kept at him until he has let it grow out to its beautiful fullness! The first time we took her, we had had her shoed at home with some shoes that we thought would give her traction. Turned out, though, that those roads are so slick from all the horse travel and also so steep in a lot of places that she absolutely couldn't stand up. I got scared she was going to break a leg. As you can see in the pic there is also nowhere to get on the shoulder. In a lot of places there is a little ditch cut through besides. Roy had to get off and lead her. She sensed that she couldn't stand up and was putting her feet down like a little old woman and even then skating as we went. We finally got her back to where she was boarding and told our friend what was happening. Of course, he knew what needed to be done and got a blacksmith over right away. He put something on the shoes called drill tec and as soon as we got her back out on the road, she knew it was a different ballgame and confidently went on her way again - animals are so smart!!
After a 5 year absence we have finally acquired a double-walled hive complete with Honey bees. We went to Ferns on Saturday & bought them off a fabulous bee-keeper, lovely man we were chatting for 2 hours nearly. They are setting in nicely & bringing back plenty of pollen. I rested my phone right by them as they were coming in & out the hive, just in my tshirt & shorts. They weren't bothered at all, very docile bees it seems. I'll get some better quality photos off the camera in due course HWW!
We have been enjoying some very welcome sunshine, though no real warmth as yet since the winds have mostly been off the sea. Yesterday, whilst much of the UK was enjoying 18-20C, it was 10C here! But we did have more hours of sunshine than anyone else!
However the sun has been bringing the hedgerows and blossom trees to life.
