a small, elegant sawbill duck that breeds in the boreal forests of northern Europe and Russia, nesting in tree cavities close to freshwater lakes and slow-moving rivers. During the breeding season it favours quiet, fish-rich waters surrounded by coniferous woodland. In winter, Smew migrate south and west, occupying large lakes, reservoirs, gravel pits, and sheltered estuaries, where they feed mainly on small fish and aquatic invertebrates by diving.
In Britain, Smew is a scarce but regular winter visitor, arriving mainly from Scandinavia and western Russia between November and March. Most individuals are seen in southern and eastern England, particularly in the Midlands, East Anglia, and the Thames basin, with favoured sites including large reservoirs and flooded gravel workings. Occurrence in Scotland and Wales is much rarer. Birds in Britain are usually females and first-winter males (often called “redheads”), while the striking white and black adult males are less frequently recorded. Smew is strictly protected in the UK and is considered an important indicator species for the quality of wintering freshwater habitats.

I travelled next from the land of 'Oman to the land of Hurmuz. Hurmuz is a city on the sea-coast, and is also called Mughistan. Opposite it in the sea is New Hurmuz, and between them is a sea passage of three farsakhs. We came to New Hurmuz, which is an island whose city is called Jarawn. -Ibn Batutta This is Schley's magnificent map of the island city of Hormuz. This strategically important Strait of Hormuz guards the entrance to the Persian Gulf. For centuries Hormuz had been an important stopping point in the shipping lanes from India to Arabia. In the course of its long history, Hormuz was, at various times, an independent state, part of the Arabia, part of Persia and subject to Portugal. Today it is part of Iran. Ormus is mentioned frequently in literature for its legendary wealth and beauty. It is named in the works of Milton, Coleridge, Mandeville, and Ibn Batutta, to name but a few. Our map shows the island and the nearby Persian coast. Offers stunning detail of the city of Jerun, including orchards, the Palace of the King, the church of St. Lucia, various streets, and the great Fortress. No less than 16 sailing ships ply the waters. Surrounded by a stupendous decorative border with an architectural motif. Engraved by Schley under the supervision of J. Bellin for issue as plate no. 31 in the c. 1750 edition of Provost's L`Histoire Generale des Voyages .

The Town of White Springs, has drawn people to the bend in the Suwannee River for centuries. Artifacts from Paleo-Indians and Timucuans are commonly found there, with shell middens and burial mounds close by.
First incorporated as Jackson Springs in 1831 by a group of businessmen who saw the spring and a good site for a ferry as moneymaking opportunities. William B. Hooker (who later became a cattle baron in Tampa), James T. Hooker, James D. Prevatt, Joseph Bryant and John Lee obtained the incorporation papers
By 1832 the healing powers of the waters surrounded with rocks encrusted with crystals of sulfur was being celebrated as far away as Philadelphia. CHB Collins established a ferry just up river from the spring and Florida’s first tourist destination was in business.
Bryant Sheffield, who took over the ferry in 1836, built a log hotel and built a log springhouse at Upper Mineral Springs, as it was then known. From there, the resort grew. During the Civil War, Confederates found refuge from encroaching Union troops in the inland town. The Broward family, including the future governor Florida, Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, moved from Fernandina to a plantation outside town and called it Rebel’s Refuge.

Warm shallow waters surround the islands lying off the coast of Sfax, Tunisia, brought the islanders to develop characteristic fishing methods. Octopi fishing is made with clay amphoras dropped on the sandy soil tied with a rope to a floating buoy, octopi looking for refuge hide and remain inside even when the amphoras are pulled out of the water. On the other hand, fish are directed toward the traps by walls of nets or palm leaves that function like a big funnel.
Canon A1, Canon T90. Ektachrome 100. Locals didn’t like to be photographed at least until we made small talk over a soda or a delicious tea.
In the nineties I had the chance to work extensively for a few travel and life-style magazines while I was based first in Milan, Italy and later in New York, NY. When on assignment the schedule was usually tight and the time to photograph not always in sync with the best light or weather conditions, it happens. Nonetheless I always managed to bring home the result and keep my editors happy, which is paramount if you want to land more assignments that, by the way, brought me to several countries around the world.
Some assignments were more fun than others, or easier to accomplish but, nevertheless, each one of them was a positive experience and left enriching memories.
A selection of the images shot then are now part of a photobook, a great collection of beautiful pictures and entertaining anecdotes.
It comes in print and digital.

Impalila Island is in Namibian waters, surrounded by the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers . It’s about 12km long and 6km wide with a mixture of Tswana people (from Botswana) and Subia (from Namibia) living in numerous villages scattered around the island. Cultural activities include village visits and an ox-cart trip with old soldier Charles Matengu who tells stories about his dangerous antics here during the wars of independence, are fascinating. Impalila Island is only accessible by boat, unless staying at one of only two safari lodges on the island.

Jordan Pond is one of Acadia’s most pristine lakes, with outstanding mountain scenery to match. Its glacially-carved landscape exhibits numerous geologic features, its placid waters surrounded by Penobscot Mountain to the west, the Bubbles to the north, and Pemetic Mountain to the east. The 187 acre “pond” is not only an integral part of Acadia’s scenery but also provides critical habitat for wildlife and serves as the drinking water supply for Seal Harbor. Jordan Pond’s beauty, not easily forgotten, has created a favorite destination for over a century for multitudes of visitors who have enjoyed canoeing, quiet solitude, or tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House.
