Selby is a "Multicat" type of versatile workboat, often used in dredging, port construction, and other shallow-water operations. These vessels are known for their box-shaped hull, shallow draft, and open deck, typically featuring a crane and winches. They are designed for a variety of tasks including towing, anchor handling, and general support work. In this case servicing a buoy.

Multicats typically have a wide, rectangular hull, providing stability and a large working deck. They are designed to operate in shallow waters, often with drafts under 2.5 meters. Twin or Triple Screw Propulsion provides manoeuvrability and allows for shallow draft operation. The open deck provides ample space for cargo, equipment, and personnel. Multicats are often equipped with at least one hydraulic crane, such as a Palfinger PK23500MC with a 23t.m capacity used for lifting and handling operations. They also typically feature one or two winches for towing, anchor handling, and other lifting tasks.

Multicats common applications include assisting in dredging operations by transporting equipment, materials, and personnel. Aiding in the construction and maintenance of port infrastructure. Towing and anchor handling services in various marine environments. Assisting with the installation and upkeep of mooring systems. And providing a platform for various other marine support activities.

Navigation buoys are essential aids to navigation, marking channels, hazards, or specific locations for mariners.

Servicing a buoy typically involves a range of maintenance tasks to ensure its proper functioning and longevity. This can include:

* Inspection: Checking for damage, wear and tear, and the condition of ancillary equipment like lights, sensors, and power systems.

* Cleaning: Removing marine growth and debris that can affect performance or accelerate wear.

* Repairs and Replacements: Addressing any identified issues, such as repairing structures, replacing worn parts, or upgrading components like solar packages or telemetry systems.

* Re-deployment: Ensuring the buoy is correctly positioned and its mooring system is secure after servicing.

Multicats range in size from around 12 meters to over 35 meters in length. Some larger Multicats may also be equipped with Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems. Smaller Multicats can be transported by road, making them suitable for river and port work. In essence, Multicats are versatile workhorses of the marine industry, valued for their adaptability and shallow-draft capabilities in a variety of demanding roles.

Selby here is on Loch Ness which is a large freshwater loch located in the Scottish Highlands, renowned for its association with the legendary Loch Ness Monster, often referred to as Nessie. By volume, it is Scotland's largest lake, approximately 32 kilometres long and up to 213 metres deep. It is most famous for the myth of the Loch Ness Monster, a creature believed to inhabit its depths. It is a beautiful loch with calm waters surrounded by lush green hills and is part of the Caledonian Canal system, connected by a series of locks.

Loch Ness takes its name from the River Ness, which flows from the northern end. Loch Ness lies along the Great Glen Fault, which forms a line of weakness in the rocks which has been excavated by glacial erosion, forming the Great Glen and the basins of Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness.

This northern end of Loch Ness is around 10 kilometres south-west of Inverness, with Fort Augustus located at the other end. The main A82 road between Inverness and Fort William, roughly follows the western shore, passing through the villages of Drumnadrochit and Invermoriston.

Loch Ness is one of the largest in Scotland, and the whole of Great Britain. It has the greatest volume, and is the second-deepest and second-largest by surface area.

..... Certainly the best for surfing and most unspoiled.

In Rio de Janeiro's West Side, past Barra da Tijuca and Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Prainha is a surprisingly secluded tropical getaway within the city's limits. A half-crescent with clean sands and clear waters surrounded by the rainforest-covered slopes of the Grumari APA (Environmental Protection Area), Prainha is popular with surfers and anyone who's willing to explore Rio's outer shores for a day of peace and beauty. Local surfers apparently saved this unspoiled location from high rise development.

Tavira, Algarve, Portugal.

Very distinct from the traditional touristic image of the “Golden Coast”, the spectacular “Pego do Inferno” is one of the most beautiful places of Algarve´s inland. It’s a waterfall in Ribeira da Asseca, one of the most important rivers in the municipality of Tavira, which jumps into an impressive round lagoon with Mediterranean green waters, surrounded by a dense and refreshing wooded area.

Trata-se de uma queda de água da Ribeira da Asseca, um dos mais importantes cursos de água do concelho de Tavira, que se precipita numa impressionante lagoa redonda de um verde mediterrânico, rodeada por uma densa e refrescante área arborizada.

3298 Graciosa island, Lanzarote. Only a couple of miles in length, Graciosa is seen here from one of Lanzarote's wonderful viewpoints, on the NW coast. Only one area of development on Graciosa, and delightfully not much of it, a handful of vehicles (you can't take your own over), but a very few lovely simple cafes or restaurants; the rest of the island must be covered by foot or on bike, with no tarmac beneath you, and precious little shade. Fabulous clear waters surround the island of course.

Ahoy there! Let's set sail on a journey to the Pristine Islands of Kerala, where boating takes on a whole new level of creativity. Forget about those fancy motorboats and high-tech gadgets, because we're going old-school with the classic pole push method.

Pristine Island is about 20 kms by road from Cochin, the capital of Kerala. From the road head you need to engage a boatman to take you across the limpid blue backwaters, a little flustered with water hyacinth.

Picture this: you're gliding through crystal-clear waters, surrounded by a breathtaking skyline and huts perched on stilts. And who's powering your boat? None other than a skilled rower, flexing their muscles as they push the boat forward with nothing but a sturdy pole.

It's like stepping into a time machine and experiencing boating the way our ancestors did. No noisy engines or complicated controls - just you, nature, and the rhythmic sound of water splashing against your boat.

And let's not forget the view! From your unique vantage point in that humble little boat, you'll have an uninterrupted panorama of Kerala's stunning landscapes. It's like having front-row seats to nature's greatest show.

So next time you find yourself yearning for an adventure that combines simplicity and beauty, hop aboard one of these pole-pushed boats in Kerala. It's an experience that will leave you feeling connected to both tradition and nature - all while giving your rower some well-deserved props for their impressive strength!

Now, who needs fancy yachts when you can have an unforgettable boating experience with just a humble pole push?

View—of Bartolomé Island’s rugged, volcanic landscape. The night before, we had sailed from Santa Cruz to this small but famous island, known for its dramatic scenery and one of the most iconic views in the entire Galápagos.

At 7:00 AM, we boarded the dinghy and headed to shore. The climb wasn’t challenging—the wooden staircase made it manageable, and the altitude wasn’t an issue. The real challenge? The heat. Even that early in the morning, temperatures were already hitting 30°C (86°F), with humidity soaring over 95%. It felt like walking through a steam bath, but reaching the top made it all worth it.

From just over 100 meters above sea level, we had the classic Galápagos view—Pinnacle Rock jutting out of the turquoise waters, surrounded by lava fields and untouched beaches. You’ll find this view on countless postcards, but it was necessary for my Ecuador and the Galápagos portfolio.

Not the most original shot? Maybe. But seeing it in person made it unforgettable.

a panorama shot of famous Kolona beach @ Kythnos.

Kolona beach is unique due to the area’s geomorphological peculiarities. It is in fact a sandy bank of about 240 meters length, connecting the island of Kythnos with a small rocky island, that of St. Luke. The strip of sand that connects the two land masses is similar to a prostrate column, thus explaining the name. The sea whets both sides of the sand strip, thereby resulting in two beaches with common sand, creating a truly unique image.

The Kolona beach has crystal clear blue waters and coarse golden sand. It is ideal to enjoy the sea and swimming in its cool and clear waters, surrounded by this beautiful landscape. Also because of its location, it is protected on both sides from the wind thus attracting yacht owners, sometimes to the point where bathers resent their presence.

Lake Atravesado, is about 20 kilometers northeast of Coyhaique in southern Chile. It’s super easy to get to by car from the city, and the drive offers stunning views of the Andes and beautiful native forests.

This lake stands out with its crystal-clear, turquoise waters surrounded by mountains. The panoramic views, especially of the snow-capped peaks during winter and spring, are absolutely breathtaking. The area is rich with wildlife, especially birds, and lush vegetation including lenga and coigüe trees.

"In this captivating moment, a boy finds solace in the cool waters, surrounded by the warmth of the sun's rays piercing through a distinctive red brick wall. The interplay of light creates a magical scene, casting ethereal flares that dance across the surface of the water. The reflection of the sun-kissed ambiance forms a glistening pathway, inviting the viewer into a tranquil world of serenity and bliss. Nature and architecture harmonize in this picturesque setting, weaving a tale of youthful exploration and the beauty that surrounds us."

A peaceful riverside village near the Cái Răng Floating Market in Cần Thơ, southern Vietnam. A lone figure paddles a small wooden boat through calm waters, surrounded by floating vegetation. On the riverbank, stilt houses made of wood and metal rise above the water, nestled among lush greenery. Their reflections shimmer on the surface, blending sky, trees, and human presence into a quiet mosaic. This scene captures the rhythm of daily life in the Mekong Delta, where the river is both home and highway, and every gesture flows with the current.

Description (FR) :

Tsigrado, Milos, Cyclades, Greece.

Tsigrado beach is the ultimate “postcard” of Milos. The climb down through a narrow rocky passage is very difficult, the way back even worst, but it's worth it. This small sandy cove with crystal emerald waters, surrounded by rocky cliffs is one the most beautiful beaches on the Cyclades islands.

Tsigrado é o derradeiro “postal” de Milos. A descida através de uma estreita passagem rochosa é bastante difícil, o caminho de volta ainda pior, mas vale a pena. Hey, my Flickr friends! 🌊

Today, I want to transport you directly to a corner of paradise with this spectacular photo I captured with my GoPro from underwater. Imagine diving into the ocean, where crystal-clear waters surround you and let you see every detail beneath the surface. On the horizon, those iconic overwater bungalows of the Maldives rise majestically, as if floating in the middle of the ocean.

The sky is a deep blue canvas, so intense you can almost feel its vastness, dotted with cotton-like clouds that seem hand-painted. The calm and serenity this view conveys are simply unparalleled.

I know many of us are enduring a scorching heatwave, especially in the Mediterranean. While the sun blazes relentlessly here, I hope this image brings you a breath of fresh air, even if just for a moment. 🌅❄️

Dive into this landscape with me, close your eyes, and feel the sea breeze on your face. I wish I could virtually take you all to this Maldivian paradise! Until then, stay cool, hydrated, and keep your mind in this paradise!

NASA image acquired May 10, 2001

In July 2008, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) added 27 new areas to its list of World Heritage sites. One of those areas included the lagoons of New Caledonia. Some 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) east of Australia, this French-governed archipelago contains the world’s third-largest coral reef structure. The coral reefs enclose the waters near the islands in shallow lagoons of impressive biodiversity.

On May 10, 2001, the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus on NASA’s Landsat 7 satellite captured this image of Île Balabio, off the northern tip of Grande Terra, New Caledonia’s main island. In this natural-color image, the islands appear in shades of green and brown—mixtures of vegetation and bare ground. The surrounding waters range in color from pale aquamarine to deep blue, and the color differences result from varying depths. Over coral reef ridges and sand bars, the water is shallowest and palest in color. Darker shades of blue characterize deeper waters. Reef-enclosed, shallow waters surround Île Balabio, and a larger, semi-enclosed lagoon appears immediately east of that island. Immediately north of Grande Terra, unenclosed, deeper waters predominate.

The coral reefs around New Caledonia support an unusual diversity of species, including large numbers of predators and big fish, turtles, and the world’s third-largest dugong population.
