...celebrating the United States, birthday-cake-warzone style; or, just another Tuesday in Vegas. :)

It didn't have to come to this. If only they could have broken out of the mold.

Coming soon!

A Caritas Ukraine distribution point for food, water, medicines and other essential goods in the city centre of Ivano-Frankyvsk. Staff and volunteers provide 1200 meals a day for displaced people.

Romana Zarovetska (61):

"For almost 29 years I have been cooking for poor people in the city. I am a professional cook and I used to work in restaurants. Now I only work for Caritas.

Right now, I'm making rice porridge with sausages and carrot salad.

I get lots of compliments on my cooking from the people who come here to get food. My approach is this: if my husband and children like it, then I will cook it for other people as well.

My favourite dish to make is borsch, the traditional Ukrainian beetroot soup."

Large parts of Ukraine have been in a state of war since 2014. But since February 2022, the lives of all Ukrainians have been severely affected by violence, shortages of goods and food and a major displacement crisis.

In Ukraine, Cordaid funds partner organisations through Caritas Internationalis, a global network of Catholic aid organisations.

Caritas staff and volunteers have geared up and they are working day and night (not an exaggeration) to support people who have fled their homes with sometimes nothing more than the clothes they had on or those who, for whatever reason, cannot flee and are stuck in a warzone.

The western part of the country, and especially the city of Lviv, has become a humanitarian hub after the situation in the east deteriorated.

Trucks full of goods from neighbouring countries, often purchased with money from private donors from all over Europe, arrive there to be unloaded in storage spaces.

With great efficiency, aid workers load up their own trucks and start driving to the cities in the east, that have been suffering continuous air raids and bombings, and where, in some cases, people are still living in between the rubble.

Caritas does not only distribute food, water, clothes and medicines, they also provide a home for hundreds of displaced people or guide them to the border in case they are looking for safety outside of the country.

There is extra care for children in special centres or in family run orphanages, where they can learn, play and live at a safe distance from the ongoing violence.

In cities throughout the country, Caritas has set up tents where the most essential goods are being distributed and food kitchens where displaced people and others struggling with the hardship can get a daily warm meal. To give just an example: in the city of Ivano-Frankyvsk volunteers provide meals for 1200 people each day.

Many of those who are working in this immense humanitarian operation have suffered the consequences of the conflict themselves. It's a cliché, but it's true: war often brings out both the worst and the best in us.

This is a sneak peak of my upcoming one off series called "De Facto", shot in the breakaway territory of Abhkazia, formally Western Georgia.

During the next 12 months I aim to venture to a few countries off the beaten track to shoot bodies of work hopefully containing abandoned locations a little different from the usual seen.

This is a superb abandoned train station in the de facto nation, shot in Blue Hour.

AEROSOL WARZONE COLLECTION- SCANNED CLASSICS !!

During the 15th to later 18th century, much of what is now southern Ukraine was known as the "Wild Fields". This was a sparsely populated area that was a warzone for centuries between the Cossacks and the Crimean Tatars. The origins of the Cossacks are still widely debated, but the general consensus is that they are primarily descended from Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian serfs who fled the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Muscovy. They believed that it would be better to live free and take their chances in the wild fields than to live under serfdom. They would then develop a unique system of democracy and were strongly opposed to slavery.

Mongol power at this point in time was gone, and it would be replaced by a few Tatar states that were still a thorn in the side of the states of Eastern Europe. One of these states was the Crimean Khanate. The Crimean Khanates economy was based on the slave trade and would continuously launch raids in the wild fields and beyond. It is estimated that they enslaved 2-3 million people between the 15th and 18th centuries. Their main trading partner was the Ottoman Empire, who they were an ally and vassal to as they were fellow Muslims in an area surrounded by hostile Christian states. Due to the constant slave raiding, the Cossacks would become more militarized and develop a reputation for being fierce warriors. During this time, both the Cossacks and the Tatars would ally with larger powers and fight against each other. On rare occasions they would become allies in some conflicts.

The centuries long conflict between the Cossacks and Crimean Tatars would come to end when the Russian Empire would annex the Crimean Khanate in 1783, ending the slave trade. The wild fields would turn out to be some of the most fertile soil in the world and become highly populated area in the Russian empire. The Cossacks, due to their rebellious tendencies, would later be forcibly located to Southern Russia. The Crimean Tatars would later became a tiny minority regulated to the Crimean peninsula.

For a while I wanted to build something related to the Cossacks. This is largely based on a painting by Polish artist Jozef Brandt showing the Cossacks fighting the Tatars.

Passing through the Polish village of Zbereze on my way to Sobibor, I found myself literally 200 m. from the Ukrainian border, so I decided to stop and take a short path to the bank of the Bug River, through the middle of which the border passes. These trees on the other bank are already Ukraine. In April 2026, this is in the midst of open war against Russia. And remember that from time to time Russian missiles and drones have crossed this border without thinking about legalities...

This photo is part of a trip through central Poland, focused especially on the most tragic moments of the Holocaust and World War II, which devastated Poland like few places, but which at the same time contrasts with the incredible rebirth of the country up to the present day.

📍 Kyiv 🇺🇦☮️

Here's another previously unposted photo from my trip to Kyiv. The situation in Ukraine has had me revisiting my photographic archive.

Three years ago when this was taken, there wasn't a hint of what was to come. Volodymyr Zelenskyy was elected as president only a few weeks prior.

The Kyiv funicular is a short, steep railroad travelling up Volodymyrska Hill that connects the lower commercial neighbourhood of Podil to the historic Uppertown. The funicular itself dates back to 1905.

I hope Putin's rockets haven't yet destroyed this little piece of history. They seem pretty indiscriminate in their attacks so far. I hope the brave and resilient people of Ukraine repel the invasion as they fight to keep their freedom, independence and lives.

Whilst Christmas is a time for joy, laughter, and quality time with family, never forget how lucky you are. Not everyone get to smile, celebrate, or even live in peace. I was blessed enough to be a small part of this, mindblowing piece of art, put together by Valerie Desmoulins (valeries.muircastle). Scenery, poses and light, done by Valerie. I was truly touched by the thought, and amount of detail put into this. I am honored to share it here with the world. Here is my take, my shot and my edit, of her idea.

Be sure to also show her take some love, because she truly deserves it, and take a few minutes, to read those words she wrote. Right here ::

Forces from Ulandus are patrolling the jungles of the Nestlands. Troops loyal to the High Council, armed with weapons from Mpya Stedor, have staged an ambush here. Their prey, a pair of Leander heavy infantrymen in the Ulandus army patrolling along a small stream has walked straight into the trap. The peace and quiet of the forest will soon break as sharp bolts pierce the shiny Ulandian armor and color the stream with Leander blood...

Third cousin of the old Trade Federation's C-9979 landing craft, the D88 was a smaller but more armoured version, designed and built during the Galactic Civil War. The Vorpon factories could not replicate the precision manufacturing of Haor Chall Engineering but then they didn't want to. What was needed was a much simpler and tougher ship, designed to endure use in a warzone. Initially tested by the Rebellion, the ship was evaluated and found to be too slow and was replaced with the GR-75.
