NYC bachelor pad's tiny kitchen

Cat yawning and sitting on a stripped background

This is allll me. The couch, the light, her. Moody, waking up from her nap, and covered in beautiful sunset light. This is one of my favorite spots in our house for photos.

Yuba waking up in the morning at Naomi's house. At first he is moving around, rather blurrily, then he looks at Naomi, saying "good morning" and then, "where's my food?"

"When you start to see the light that you really are, the light waking up in you, the radiance, you realize it has no intention to change you. It has no intention to harmonize. It has no agenda. It just happens." - Adyashanti

The moment when you first wake up in the morning is the most wonderful of the twenty-four hours. No matter how weary or dreary you may feel, you possess the certainty that, during the day that lies before you, absolutely anything may happen. And the fact that it practically always doesn't, matters not a jot.

The possibility is always there. - Monica Baldwin

"...Home again

Home again

One day I know

I'll feel strong again..."

Fred's Swedish girlfriend during their first vacation together in Sweden. Probably he was working in Jönköping at the time and they travelled from "Lindköping" (I guess he either means Lidköping or Linköping) to Motala and the Varamobaden. The photo album documenting Fred, a German chef, working in Sweden was bought on German ebay.

It's not everyday that I get to see the warm morning sunshine. I'm usually up before the sun, stuck in an office building, with the sun setting as I make my way home. With all photography, the light makes the photo great. For this one, I opted to ignore any recognizable subjects, and make the subject the light itself.

..against the walls, against your rules, against your skin

my beard grew down to the floor and out through the doors..

it's a new day.

Breathe in the new-ness.

Estirarse. Reanudar la vida.

on the twelfth of september sixteen years ago, in the cold steel kitchen of a remote irish youth hostel, the man who'd become my husband asked if he could borrow my swiss army knife to open his can of beans.

we tend to celebrate the meeting more than we do the wedding (which happened four years later). sometimes we go out to dinner. sometimes we look at old photos. sometimes we make hostel slop.

and sometimes, life happens.

about a week ago, as soon as he found out he had tomorrow and friday off (he's a high school chemistry teacher), he decided to ride up to burlington, vermont to fill up some growlers at the magic hat brewery. he's been talking about it all week, how he'd leave right after classes on wednesday.

as in, today.

yesterday morning, i got a call on the train. "i'm cancelling my ride. i want to take you out to dinner tomorrow." "why???" then i paused. "oh." we laughed, and he said, "so you forgot, too?" i told him we'd talk about it that night, but he should still go; we could celebrate when he got back. "we'll see," he said.

when i got home from work last night, his helmet, gloves and gear were waiting on the dining table like cookies put out for santa. he stood there, not knowing what to do with hands, grinning like a grade-schooler. i laughed and said, "go." "thank you!" he said, and threw his arms around me.

yay on us.

that place where we are still connected to sleep

At Blackwater Pond the tossed waters have settled

after a night of rain.

I dip my cupped hands. I drink

a long time. It tastes

like stone, leaves, fire. It falls cold

into my body, waking the bones. I hear them

deep inside me, whispering

oh what is that beautiful thing

that just happened?
