We spent a bit of time with this Cheetah as he used his elevated spot to look for prey. As of 2014, IUCN listed them as "Vulnerable". Estimated to 8,000 or less animals left in the wild, and numbers have decreased by 50% over the last 4 decades.
Hypopyrrhus pyrohypogaster
(Red-bellied Grackle / Cacique candela)
This individual is a subadult. Young ones have black eyes and the adults have white eyes. You can see she (I believe is a female) still have dark eyes, but not so much.
La Ceja, Colombia; 2.300 meters above sea level.
The red-bellied grackle is endemic to Colombia where it is found in all three Andean ranges at altitudes of 800 to 2,400m (2,600 to 7,900ft) above sea level.
Its natural habitat is tropical forest, but the trees are increasingly being felled for timber and to make way for agriculture, and little virgin forest remains within its range.
H. pyrohypogaster was formerly classified as "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature but in 2012 the threat level was lowered to "vulnerable". This is on the basis that, although its forest habitat remains under pressure, it has been found at some new locations where it was not known before. The total population is now estimated to be in the range 2,500 to 9,999 individuals.
This is one of the hot springs in Yellowstone National Park. Much like the other hot springs it has amazing colors.
White Pelicans in the frigid water of Cherry Creek Reservoir. With one wing frozen in place and beaks freezing shut, all I could do was leave a message in hopes that it was listened to and that a park ranger would help. I stayed for an hour and walked out to where they were on shore but it only sent them into the water. It was a cold 17 degrees with no sign of warming up soon.
The oystercatcher is a large, stocky, black and white wading bird. It has a long, orange-red bill and reddish-pink legs. In flight it shows a wide, white wing-stripe, a black tail and a white rump that extends as a 'V' between the wings.
Because it eats cockles, the population is vulnerable if cockle beds are overexploited.
They breed on almost all UK coasts. During the last 50 years, more birds have started breeding inland. Most UK birds spend the winter on the coast where they are joined on the east coast by birds from Norway. (Wikipedia)
The Corsican Nuthatch (Sitta whiteheadi) is a small, vulnerable bird species endemic to the island of Corsica.
It lives in high-altitude old-growth Corsican Pine forests, relying on them for food (pine seeds/invertebrates) and breeding. The species faces threats from habitat loss and is protected by conservation efforts.
The Corsican Nuthatch is a small (12 cm) bird with blue-grey upperparts and a relatively long bill. It is highly specialised, living almost exclusively in old-growth Corsican Pine (Pinus nigra laricio) forests, where it feeds on pine seeds and invertebrates.
Endemic to Corsica, means it is found nowhere else in the world, specifically in Corsican Pine forests at altitudes of 1,000–1,500 m (3,300–5,000 ft).

She knows that being vulnerable is not a weakness,
but a language the heart uses when it gets rid of its masks
and dares, at last, to be itself.
She knows that it is in the most extreme fragility
that echoes the greatest proof of courage:
the courage to reach out to oneself.
Because it takes a certain wisdom of the heart to understand
that sometimes, it is at the very moment when everything seems about to break
that everything can be rebuilt.
It is the silent rebirth of those who have cried enough to know
that cracks are not always flaws,
and that scars are never anything but an opportunity for light to shine through.

The Cheetah is listed as "Vulnerable" by IUCN Red List. There are only about 1500 in Kenya and the population is declining.
Niagara was constructed from 1812 to 1813 to protect the vulnerable American coastline on Lake Erie from the British and played a pivotal role in the battle for the lake. Along with most warships that served in the war, Niagara was sunk for preservation on Presque Isle in 1820. Raised in 1913, it was rebuilt for the centennial of the Battle of Lake Erie. After deteriorating, the restoration of Niagara was started again in the 1930s, but was hampered by the lack of funds caused by the Great Depression and remained uncompleted until 1963. A more extensive restoration was carried out in 1988 in which much of the original ship was largely destroyed. The incorporation of new materials and modern equipment makes it ambiguous as to whether it is or is not a replica. (Wikipedia)
The Niagara is the third reconstruction of the original. This two-masted square-rigged sailing vessel was launched in 1988 for the 175th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie. (Erie Maritime Museum)
The ship was moved to New England in 2025 for an extensive refit which would return the vessel to full operational status. The ship arrived in Boothbay Harbor, Maine in June 2025 for retrofit, with the stated goal to return the vessel to Erie by July 2026 to celebrate the United States Semiquincentennial. (Wikipedia)
Here is a fossa, it is a cat-like mammal that is closely related to the mongoose family, although, many people compare it to a small cougar. It is a carnivore endemic to Madagascar, and is currently considered in a vulnerable state.
This particular animal was relatively calm around people it seemed due to it being a frequent visitor to the bush camps garbage dump.
Snowy Owl is a Vulnerable species (IUCN Red List)

This Snowy Owl uses an unconventional perch to scan for prey. The antenna was on a small shed east of the village of Beiseker, northeast of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. On the open prairies, there may not be many natural prominent spots for these raptors, so they use what they find.
The Hispaniolan Elegant Slider turtle is endemic to Haiti and Dominican Republic and is considered a vulnerable species.
While it doesn’t make scientific sense to photograph a turtle with a wide aperture…I like this shot and thought it’s worth sharing.

It is endemic to the regions of Andaman and Nicobar islands, Sumatra, Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia. It lives in a wide variety of habitats such as swamp forests, lowland evergreen forest, palm plantations, gardens and public parks. although it can use man-made habitats, it is experiencing rapid declines due to forest loss and hunting for bird trading. It is considered Vulnerable in IUCN Red List. Taken in Malay Peninsula in 2019.

Experts believe that the modern-day hippo evolved in Africa around 8 million years ago. While they bear a resemblance to horses and pigs, these semi-aquatic mammals are in fact most closely related to whales, dolphins and porpoises – no wonder they’re so good at holding their breath underwater! These days there are only two types, the bog-standard hippopotamus and the smaller pygmy hippopotamus, but a few other now extinct species could be found across Europe and in Madagascar as little as 1,000 years ago. Hippos are now most common in countries such as Zambia and Tanzania.
In Africa hippo numbers are sadly declining. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed them as a vulnerable species in 2006 after establishing that the hippo population had declined by as much as 20% within the previous two decades. Drought has led to habitat loss, and the hunting and poaching of hippos, both for their meat and ivory teeth, is also a major threat.
Hippo Day reminds us to celebrate and value these mud-loving mammals, in the hope that they’ll be around for many more years to come.

The Damme Canal (French: Canal de Damme. Dutch: Damse Vaart or Napoleonvaart) is a canal in the Belgian province of West Flanders. The canal links Bruges with the Western Scheldt at Sluis (now across the frontier in The Netherlands). It was constructed on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte who wished to create a canal network in order to permit the efficient transport of troops without the risk of disruptive interventions from the British navy.
Following the defeat of Napoleon, the original strategic imperative for the canal was removed. The plans in the Napoleonic era had called for a link to the Scheldt at Breskens. Half a century later the canal opened to traffic in 1856, and the link with the sea had moved to Sluis.
At Damme the canal crosses the Leopold Canal and the Schipdonk Canal, both of which were dug in the middle years of the nineteenth century in order to reduce the vulnerability of the Belgian canal network to Dutch interference, after the achievement in 1830 of Belgian independence. It was necessary to create a system of Siphons because of the differences in water level of the three canals. The canal was used until 1940 when French troops destroyed the siphon system: this put an end to maritime transport on the Damme Canal.
After war use of the canal resumed, but it was used now by pleasure boats, along with a tourist boat connecting Damme and Bruges.
It is not a stretch to imagine where I got the title for this image. The narrative came right away, as this huge and fallen tree appeared to be protecting the much smaller, and highly vulnerable of those that lay below. They too were given a remarkable view of the distant mountain, which also offers depth to the shot.
Out of the picture is the clearing for a roadway that is likely where the tree originated. However, that place has not changed in over a year, while the young grow beneath the safeguard of the departed.
Saw this Cheetah in the early evening, so shadows were starting to be a problem. I was happy to get her at an angle with some light. Seen in Loisaba Conservancy, Kenya. The Cheetah was last assessed as "Vulnerable" on the ICUN Red List. Numbers are thought to be about 6500 in the wild and the numbers are decreasing.

Galápagos sea lions are especially vulnerable to human activity. Their inquisitive and social nature makes them more likely to approach areas inhabited by humans, and thus come into contact with human waste, fishing nets, and hooks. They occupy many different shoreline types, from steep, rocky cliff sides to low-lying sandy beaches. To avoid overheating during the day, sea lions will take refuge from the sun under vegetation, rocks, and cliffs.
Not only are sea lions social, they are also quite vocal. Adult males often bark in long, loud and distinctive repeated sequences. Females and juveniles do not produce this repetitive bark, but both sexes of younger pups will growl. From birth, a mother sea lion recognizes her pup's distinct growl/bark and can pinpoint it from a crowd of 30 or more barking sea lions.
