This is Luc at 19. Every year on the day before their birthdays I make a portait of my boys. Luc turns 19 today. This year's portrait is a little surreal with colour. Because the past year has felt a little surreal. It seems a little surreal to Tracy and I that our little blond headed baby is now legally an adult. We've been seeing him mature both physically and mentally over the last year as his adolescent behaviours fade and the adult has been slowly emerging. Luc has faced some challenges as well this year. He's done so bravely and has managed to control and overcome some of his fears. Emotionally he's opening up to us a little more... learning that it is OK to be vulnerable. We are proud of the steps he has taken, hopeful for his future, despite that the worry and the wonder we felt on the day he was born have never faded. Happy birthday son, and welcome to adulthood.

You all know by now that one of my passions is photography and when the temperatures drop, the weather gets nasty, I get bored or I am just not compelled, I like to bring the photography indoors. This usually involves Snickers or some other vulnerable creature.

The Snicks is usually a willing participant in all of this but this day he just wasn't in the modeling mood. He had birds to watch and that Christmas tree that was just too much of a temptation. But anyway, here are some of the New Years series fails that I tried to revive. Snicks really didn't mind the attention BTW.

Steve and I are going hiking today so Snicks gets a day off!

The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the cat family (Felidae). The lion is sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females with a typical weight range of 150 to 250 kg (331 to 551 lb) for the former and 120 to 182 kg (265 to 401 lb) for the latter. Male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognisable feature of the species.

A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The species is an apex and keystone predator, although they scavenge when opportunities occur.

Typically, the lion inhabits grasslands and savannas but is absent in dense forests. It is usually more diurnal than other big cats, but when persecuted it adapts to being active at night and at twilight.

It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996 because populations in African countries have declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes for concern. - Wikipedia

"To take a photograph is to participate in another person's mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time's relentless melt.”

“To share your weakness is to make yourself vulnerable; to make yourself vulnerable is to show your strength.”

Poem:

Cheer up, O grievous snail.

I tap your shell, encouragingly,

not that you will ever know about it.

And I want nothing to do with you, either, sulking toad.

Imagine, at least four times my size and yet so vulnerable.

I could open your belly with my claw.

You glare and bulge, a

watchdog near my pool; you make a loud and hollow noise.

I do not care for such stupidity.

I admire compression, lightness,

and agility, all rare in this loose world.

The flower head is normally erect not nodding in bad weather, and the color is pale violet.

In Germany this plant can be found only here, on the meadow called Garchinger Heide.

All other populations elsewhere have already vanished.

There are some other populations in Eastern Europe and Russia.

The flower loves dry, chalky or sandy meadows. Its numbers are diminishing in every country, and the species is in a vulnerable state.

I shot this the day before the big quake and the resulting tsunami hit Japan. I'm not sure if I will ever look at the ocean the same way again. In some ways this shot reminds me of the world as I remember it on September 10th, 2001. Everything suddenly shifted from the comfort of the mundane to the horror of the unimaginable. I think the world changed on 3/11/2011 just as it did on 9/11/2001.

I had to take a deep breath before i ventured out on to this rocky ledge as it was lashed and battered by the power of the sea , standing there in the dark i felt very vulnerable as the huge waves battered the rocks , slamming in to them creating a loud booming sound . i was absolutely soaked from head to foot as i clung on to my tripod for dear life , i had one of those plastic water proof covers on the camera , apart from having to constantly wipe the lens the camera remanned safe and dry . Was it worth the effort , you can be the judge but nothing ventured nothing gained .

The mugger crocodile (Crocodylus palustris), also called marsh crocodile, broad-snouted crocodile and mugger, is a crocodilian native to freshwater habitats from southern Iran to the Indian subcontinent. It is extinct in Bhutan and Myanmar and has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1982.

It is a medium-sized crocodile that inhabits lakes, rivers, marshes and artificial ponds. Both young and adult mugger crocodiles dig burrows where they retreat when temperature drops below 5 °C or exceeds 38 °C. Females dig holes in the sand as nesting sites and lay up to 46 eggs during the dry season. Sex of hatchlings depends on temperature during incubation. It preys on fish, reptiles, birds and mammals. Young feed on insects.

It is one of three crocodilians in India, apart from saltwater crocodile (C. porosus) and gharial (Gavialis gangeticus). (Wikipedia)

Conservation Status: Vulnerable primarily due to habitat loss, poaching threats and illegal traffic in rhino horn. There are ~ 3,500 greater one-horned rhinos remaining in the wild, with over 70 percent of the population living in one reserve: Kaziranga National Park in India.birth June 22. 2018

A recently fledged Blackbird Chick - wondering who I am. Snapped with my mobile phone.

The Blackbird - Turdus merula, is one of the most prolific of uk birds as it has adapted to live happily in woodland and house gardens. The female is the sole nest builder which takes about 11-14 days to make and will incubate the eggs but the cock bird will help feed his offspring. The pair will produce 2-3 broods a year and the youngsters fledge after 13-14 days. The song of the blackbird is delightful and will sing for hours.

The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five species in the genus Panthera, a member of the Felidae. The leopard occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because leopard populations are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation and are declining in large parts of the global range. In Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuwait, Syria, Libya, Tunisia and most likely in Morocco, leopard populations have already been extirpated.

Contemporary records suggest that the leopard occurs in only 25% of its historical global range. Leopards are hunted illegally, and their body parts are smuggled in the wildlife trade for medicinal practices and decoration.

Compared to other wild cats, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but generally has a smaller, lighter physique. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.

The leopard is distinguished by its well-camouflaged fur, opportunistic hunting behaviour, broad diet, and strength (which it uses to move heavy carcasses into trees), as well as its ability to adapt to various habitats ranging from rainforest to steppe, including arid and montane areas, and its ability to run at speeds of up to 58 kilometers per hour (36 mph). – Wikipedia

I rarely photograph eagles sitting on the ground. One big advantage of perching high up in a tree is that it gives them a position of strength to view possible prey as well as keep an eye open for enemies.

This one appears a bit vulnerable as he surveys the terrain around him and is hoping it is safe to walk over a few yards to some roadside kill by a busy road.

itsi bitsi spider... somehow less scary than the more hairy sisters

There are a lot of things you won't have any power over in life, many things will happen, and lots of it might make you feel completely lost and vulnerable, kind of like sailing along all alone on a raft through eternity, having to defend yourself against unknown and perhaps known enemies. Just keep in mind... you might feel like you're all alone, but you will always have someone. Even if it is just a tiny goat, it's still someone. And clean feet, nice tea, and a cake... these things will always make any day brighter. Just saying..

This picture is HUGE btw. You can click it twice to zoom in since I have a Pro account. If it looks blurry, just wait and let it load. :)
