In 1988, the total population of this species was estimated at only 2,500 individuals. It is threatened with extinction due to the destruction of its habitats and illegal trade. In 2014, the Hyacinth Macaw moved up one position on the IUCN Red List, now being classified as "vulnerable" (VU).
Due to the fight against illegal trade and the creation of ecological reserves, the number of individuals of this species has increased slightly to approximately 4,000 in 2010. There are also conservation programs in the Pantanal for planting Manduvi and distributing artificial nests that may be contributing to the population increase of this Psittacidae.
Sadly due to the last fires in Pantanal, the species has been dramatically reduced.

White Pelicans in the frigid water of Cherry Creek Reservoir. With one wing frozen in place and beaks freezing shut, all I could do was leave a message in hopes that it was listened to and that a park ranger would help. I stayed for an hour and walked out to where they were on shore but it only sent them into the water. It was a cold 17 degrees with no sign of warming up soon.

The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five species in the genus Panthera, a member of the Felidae. The leopard occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because leopard populations are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation and are declining in large parts of the globe.
Leopards are hunted illegally, and their body parts are smuggled in the wildlife trade for medicinal practices and decoration.
Compared to other wild cats, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but generally has a smaller, lighter physique. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed., and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.
The leopard is distinguished by its well-camouflaged fur, opportunistic hunting behaviour, broad diet, and strength (which it uses to move heavy carcasses into trees), as well as its ability to adapt to various habitats ranging from rainforest to steppe, including arid and montane areas, and its ability to run at speeds of up to 58 kilometres per hour (36 mph).- Source Wikipedia

There are quite a few colourful kingfishers in Thailand, and Black-capped Kingfisher is particularly eye-catching including for that large red bill. The species is ranked as Vulnerable by the IUCN, mainly due to population declines. This individual was seen at a boardwalk that went some distance along a channel we travelled on by boat. The location was near Laem Phak Bia in Phetchaburi province.

The colors of the male Multi-colored Tanager are almost hard to believe. This brilliant little tanagers are only found in a small range in Colombia in the west and north Andes

A chunky and gregarious resident of wet upland forests; often found in flocks of up to 15 birds. Its green body, bluish head, and orange-red spot on upper chest readily separates this species from the Imperial Parrot, the only other parrot sharing its range, as well as parrot species commonly kept in captivity. The largely blue underwing, often seen in flight, is also distinctive. Calls include a shrill “chur-lu-weeek” with the final note louder and higher pitched, plus a shrill, almost trilled, “cureeek.”

The Chestnut-collared Longspur breeds in the prairies of west-central Canada and north-central USA. It migrates for the winter to south-central USA and northern Mexico. This image of a breeding male was taken near Travers Reservoir in southern Alberta, Canada.
Really pleased with how this picture of a Snow Leopard at Marwell Wildlife Park came out. There is almost a sadness her the eyes as she stares out into the park, it is no wonder there is a sadness with the snow leopard being classified as vulnerable by the WWF and only around 4000 of these majestic cats left!
The elegant and well-camouflaged snow leopard is one of the world’s most elusive cats. Thinly spread across 12 countries in central Asia, it’s at home in high, rugged mountain landscapes. But habitat deterioration, habitat loss, poaching and climate change are now threatening their survival.
The snow leopard has a beautiful, spotted coat, thick enough to insulate them from the cold. Their wide, fur-covered feet distribute their weight over soft snow, like natural snowshoes.
Snow leopards are solitary creatures, and skillful predators, able to kill prey up to three times their own weight in challenging terrain. It’s been found that poaching and retaliatory killing (as a consequence of a snow leopard killing livestock) are sometimes linked, and the attitudes and support from local communities living in these remote mountain areas are critical to the success of snow leopard conservation.

Also known as the white-lipped deer (Cervus albirostris) for the white patches around its muzzle. They live in the grasslands and forests of the high altitude Tibetan Plateau and have a variety of physical and physiological adaptations to living in a rugged, cold, and lowered oxygen environment. The Multicolored Tanager (Chlorochrysa nitidissima), one of Colombia's prettiest tanagers, is ENDEMIC to the mountains of Colombia. As of 2010, the IUCN categorized this bird as vulnerable (VU). It was a commonly encountered bird in its small range, but habitat loss is causing severe population decline. The Multicolored Tanager is found mainly from 1300 to 2200 meters above sea level in the interior of wet forests.

This species is a wetland specialist, breeding colonially in large reed beds by lakes or swamps. It eats reed aphids in summer, and reed seeds in winter, its digestive system changing to cope with the very different seasonal diets.
Often having to take grit in order to help digestion.
The bearded reedling is a species of temperate Europe and Asia. It is resident, and most birds do not migrate other than eruptive or cold weather movements. It is vulnerable to hard winters, which may kill many birds. The English population of about 500 pairs is largely confined to the south and east with a small population in Leighton Moss in north Lancashire. In Ireland a handful of pairs breed in County Wexford. The largest single population in Great Britain is to be found in the reedbeds at the mouth of the River Tay in Perth and Kinross, Scotland, where there may be in excess of 250 pairs.
Other Breeding areas include Norfolk and Somerset and Alkborough Flats, lincolnshire.

Look at those antlers! 😍 So gorgeous...but I did feel a bit vulnerable as there was only me and him with lots of bellowing from another Stag behind me somewhere. He locked eyes on me and refused to budge...well why should he I guess...a little unnerving as he was a whopper!! Bumped into him just as the sun was going down...
Just a day or two old, on a shoreline, alone, no defenses at all, against so many predators. I adore these little critters.

I spent the evening on Cissbury Ring this week watching the most amazing cloud show as all around me were showers. Incedibly though I managed not to get wet through the whole time I was up there!
World Pangolin Day 2024 is on 17 February, a day to raise awareness of pangolins or scaly anteaters, one of the most unique and endangered mammals on Earth. Their scales are harvested for traditional medicines that see them as cure-alls.
Pangolins are a very rare species and very difficult to see on a safari. One evening, on our way back to camp we happened to see a Temminck's Ground Pangolin.
Pangolins are almost completely covered in overlapping, protective scales, which makes up about 20% of their body weight. The scales are composed of keratin, the same material that forms human hair and fingernails, and give pangolins an appearance similar to a pinecone or artichoke. The underside of a pangolin is not covered with scales, but sparse fur, instead. When threatened, it usually rolls up into a ball, thus protecting its vulnerable belly. Pangolins are 30 to 90 cm long exclusive of the tail and weigh from 5 to 27 kg (Wikipedia).

The Black-bellied Plover in the middle of the three in this image is taking off, and its raised wings show the black axillaries of the species. The long wings befit a bird that often makes non-stop transcontinental flights, and only occasionally lands in the interior of large land masses. These individuals were on the west shore of Weed Lake near Langdon in southern Alberta, Canada.

I think it's fair to say that the true measure of a society is on how it treats it's most vulnerable people.
Bearing in mind that any one of us can become disabled at any time through no fault of our own. The societal safety net that we all pay into during our lives is there for that very reason. To care for us if or when we are unable to care for ourselves.
We therefore owe it to ourselves to fight these welfare cuts, to put pressure on our MPs to vote against the changes. Don't just think about it, do it, let them know because one day it could be you that needs to depend upon them for survival.

The tapir was on the run, chased by dogs...
She managed to escape, but her cub did not.
Sadly, small animals and birds have suffered from persecution by dogs that are abandoned in the environmental park.
These dogs are natural hunters and are becoming a serious problem in the Brasília Mineral Water National Park.

Snowy Albatross has a Conservation Status under the IUCN of Vulnerable

This is a subadult Snowy Albatross, based on the white windows in the wings. It takes many years for individuals to develop the full white adult plumage.
A close look at this image shows beautiful black vermiculations on the back, wing bases, and rump/uppertail coverts.
This individual was seen in pelagic waters (where this and related species spend most of their lives apart from breeding) near South Georgia Island in a remote part of the South Atlantic Ocean.
This species is held by some sources to have the greatest wingspan of any living bird. Reports suggest it can reach some 3.7 metres (12 feet). Amazing, and clearly an advantage in their very extensive wanderings over the expanses of our planet’s southern oceans.
