Fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus), a medium-sized wild cat of South and Southeast Asia. It lives mostly in the vicinity of wetlands, along rivers, streams, oxbow lakes, in swamps and mangroves where it preys mostly on fish.
8 year old male, Miso-Chi, lives at the San Diego Zoo and has an artificial mangrove in which to "catch" his dinner.

The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five species in the genus Panthera, a member of the Felidae. The leopard occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because leopard populations are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation and are declining in large parts of the global range.
Contemporary records suggest that the leopard occurs in only 25% of its historical global range. Leopards are hunted illegally, and their body parts are smuggled into the wildlife trade for medicinal practices and decoration.
Compared to other wild cats, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but generally has a smaller, lighter physique. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.
The leopard is distinguished by its well-camouflaged fur, opportunistic hunting behaviour, broad diet, and strength (which it uses to move heavy carcasses into trees), as well as its ability to adapt to various habitats ranging from rainforest to steppe, including arid and montane areas, and its ability to run at speeds of up to 58 kilometres per hour (36 mph). – Wikipedia
Hyacinth Macaw - Vulnerable.
The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest parrot in the world and easily one of the most spectacular. It is an enormous bird weighing on average 1.5 kilograms (3.5 pounds) and is completely blue save its dark bill and bare yellow orbital ring and stripe at base of its lower mandible. It is completely dependent on the fruits of a number of palm species and has a necessarily massive bill to aid in the cracking of the tough exterior. Due to its dependence on palm fruit its range is regulated by the presence and abundance of its preferred species and is distributed in north central and south central Brazil into extreme north west Paraguay where it can be found in palm savannas, Mauritia palm stands, open dry woodland, gallery forest and the edge of humid lowland forest.

The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the cat family (Felidae). The lion is sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females with a typical weight range of 150 to 250 kg (331 to 551 lb) for the former and 120 to 182 kg (265 to 401 lb) for the latter. Male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognisable feature of the species.
A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The species is an apex and keystone predator, although they scavenge when opportunities occur.
Typically, the lion inhabits grasslands and savannas but is absent in dense forests. It is usually more diurnal than other big cats, but when persecuted it adapts to being active at night and at twilight.
It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996 because populations in African countries have declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes for concern. - Source Wikipedia

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a large cat of the subfamily Felinae that occurs in Southern, North and East Africa, and a few localities in Iran. The species is IUCN Red Listed as vulnerable, as it suffered a substantial decline in its historic range in the 20th century due to habitat loss, poaching, illegal pet trade, and conflict with humans. By 2016, the global cheetah population has been estimated at approximately 7,100 individuals in the wild.
It is the fastest land animal. The only extant member of the genus Acinonyx. The cheetah is characterized by a slender body, deep chest, spotted coat, small rounded head, black tear-like streaks on the face, long thin legs and long spotted tail. Its lightly built, slender form is in sharp contrast with the robust build of the big cats, making it more similar to the cougar.
Cheetahs are active mainly during the day, hunting for their major activity. Adult males are sociable despite their territoriality, forming groups called coalitions. Females are not territorial; they may be solitary or live with their offspring in home ranges.
Carnivores, cheetah mainly prey upon antelopes and gazelles. They will stalk their prey to within 100–300 m (330–980 ft), charge towards it and kill it by tripping it during the chase and biting its throat to suffocate it to death.
Cheetahs can reach speeds of 112 km/h (70 mph) in short bursts, but the top end speed of the cheetah is disputed by more recent measurements. The average speed of a cheetah while hunting is about 64 km/h (40 mph). Cheetahs inhabit a variety of habitats – dry forests, scrub forests and savannahs. - Wikipedia

Today I found a box turtle in our yard.
I knew we had about 10 species of turtles that are found in New Mexico but it's the first time I've found one. It was lifted up gently for a quick photo and immediately put back where I found it to carry on enjoying whatever it is turtles do. This one was enjoying eating our flowers. Whilst this particular box turtle is one is not endangered I believe they are considered vulnerable.
Quite a nice coincidence to find it on Endangered Species Day.

The South African giraffe or Cape giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis giraffa) is a subspecies of giraffe ranging from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique. It has rounded or blotched spots, some with star-like extensions on a light tan background, running down to the hooves.
In 2016, the population was estimated at 31,500 individuals in the wild. The South African giraffe is found in northern South Africa, southern Botswana, southern Zimbabwe, and south-western Mozambique.
After local extinctions in various places, the South African giraffes have been reintroduced in many parts of Southern Africa, including in Swaziland. They are common in both in and outside of protected areas.
South African giraffes usually live in savannahs and woodlands where food plants are available. Giraffes are herbivorous animals. They feed on leaves, flowers, fruits and shoots of woody plants such as Acacia.
The IUCN announced in 2016 that it was moving the giraffe from a species of Least Concern to Vulnerable status in its Red List of Threatened Species report. That means the animal faces extinction in the wild in the medium-term future if nothing is done to minimize the threats to its life or habitat. - Source Wikipedia
A large, thick-necked black-and-white marine shag endemic to the Marlborough Sounds of New Zealand. Shows pink feet, a distinct white patch on the wings, and a blue eye-ring. Breeding adults have yellow, warty caruncles on either side of the bill. Very wary of humans and boats. Juvenile birds have dull brown upperparts and light facial skin. Similar to the Pied Shag, but white facial feathers remain below the bill; the Pied Shag has a predominantly white face that reaches the eye and a slimmer neck. Stewart Island and Chatham Islands Shag are very similar, but the three do not overlap in range. (eBird)

We took a special boat trip into the Marlborough Sound to find these endemic cormorants. It appeared to be the beginning of mating season, since this pair was being very friendly to each other. Their restricted range leaves them vulnerable to climate changes.

The red-bellied grackle is endemic to Colombia where it is found in all three Andean ranges at altitudes of 800 to 2,400m (2,600 to 7,900ft) above sea level.
Its natural habitat is tropical forest, but the trees are increasingly being felled for timber and to make way for agriculture, and little virgin forest remains within its range.
H. pyrohypogaster was formerly classified as "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature but in 2012 the threat level was lowered to "vulnerable". This is on the basis that, although its forest habitat remains under pressure, it has been found at some new locations where it was not known before. The total population is now estimated to be in the range 2,500 to 9,999 individuals.

The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), also known as the African savanna elephant, is the largest living terrestrial animal with bulls reaching a shoulder height of up to 4 m (13 ft). Both sexes have tusks, which erupt when they are 1–3 years old and grow throughout life.
It is distributed across 37 African countries and inhabits forests, grasslands and woodlands, wetlands and agricultural land. It is a social mammal, traveling in herds composed of cows and their offspring. Adult bulls usually live alone or in small bachelor groups. It is a herbivore, feeding on grasses, creepers, herbs, leaves and bark.
Since 2004, it has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. It is threatened foremost by habitat destruction, and in parts of its range also by poaching for meat and ivory.
They can weigh 7 t (7.7 short tons). The heaviest male on record weighed 10.4 t (11.5 short tons) and was shot in 1974 in Angola. Females are much smaller at about 2.2–2.6 m (7.2–8.5 ft) tall at the shoulder and up to 4 t (4.4 short tons) in weight.
Elephants attain their maximum stature when they complete the fusion of long-bone epiphyses, occurring in males around the age of 40 and females around the age of 25. – Wikipedia

Evening Grosbeak is a member of the Finches family (Fringillidae), and not as one might expect the Cardinals, Grosbeaks, and relatives (Cardinalidae). Such are the vagaries of common names. This species certainly has a heavy bill, typical of a seedeater. Males, as in this image, have a bright yellow superciliary (‘eyebrow’) and other yellowish highlights; females and juveniles are greyish. Some authorities now place this species in the genus Hesperiphona. This individual was seen in the Weaselhead Natural Area in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in wintertime — Evening Grosbeak is a year-round resident of southern Canada and the western USA, with some birds spending the colder months in central and eastern USA.

Considered habitat limited and rare. Found in calcareous fens and bogs, its caterpillar overwinters at the base of its host plant, the flat topped daisy. As such, it's vulnerable to fire.

Total population was estimated as 60–90,000 individuals in 2012.

The Nubian ibex is a desert-dwelling goat species found in mountainous areas of northern and northeast Africa, and the Middle East. It was historically considered to be a subspecies of the Alpine ibex (C. ibex), but is now considered a distinct species. The wild population is estimated at 4,500 mature individuals, and it is classified as vulnerable. Males begin growing a beard at age 2 or 3, which continues to grow longer and darker as they age. During the autumn breeding season, mature males grow a "rutting fur" on their breast and sides which is very dark brown. Nubian ibex live in rough, dry, mountainous terrain, where they eat mainly grasses and leaves, especially from Acacia trees. (Wikipedia)

We were driving into the park when we saw something mysterious on the ridge. It turned out to be the horns of this magnificent animal. Slowly, the horns grew larger as he made his way up the back side of the ridge. At the top, he surveyed his kingdom and his family. Based on descriptions, he is likely a full adult male. Further down was a younger male and several females. What a treat :-)
