Hyacinth Macaw- Vulnerable - The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest parrot in the world and easily one of the most spectacular. It is an enormous bird weighing on average 1.5 kilograms (3.5 pounds) and is completely blue save its dark bill and bare yellow orbital ring and stripe at base of its lower mandible. It is completely dependent on the fruits of a number of palm species and has a necessarily massive bill to aid in the cracking of the tough exterior. Due to its dependence on palm fruit its range is regulated by the presence and abundance of its preferred species and is distributed in north central and south central Brazil into extreme north west Paraguay where it can be found in palm savannas, Mauritia palm stands, open dry woodland, gallery forest and the edge of humid lowland forest. doi.org/10.2173/bow.hyamac1.01

From the beautiful hibiscus to the not so beautiful marine iguana.
The marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is an iguana found only on the Galápagos Islands that has the ability, unique among modern lizards, to forage in the sea, making it a marine reptile. They are able to dive down up to 30 feet into the water to find food. They have a natural ability to swim and to move around with speed.
Since so much of the time of the life for a Galapagos Marine Iguana is spent in the water there is still a great deal that we don’t know about them. It is known that they have to come to land to help with regulating their temperature. The water is too cold for them to remain in it all the time.
When the body temperature drops too much they have a hard time moving and that makes them vulnerable to predators such as frigate birds and the Galapagos hawk. They will become more aggressive too when they are cooler. They tend to spend time on rocks by the water with their head upwards to soak up as much sunlight as they can at once.
Two adult male lions (Panthera leo) have awoken from a nap, sensing some uninvited guests in their territory. Madikwe Game Reserve, North-West Province, South Africa.

Greater one-horned rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis) mom named "Tanaya" with her calf born April 11, 2020. While not yet named, the female calf has been nicknamed "Little T" . She and her mom live in the 40 acre Asian Plains Field exhibit of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
Conservation Status: Vulnerable primarily due to habitat loss, poaching threats and illegal traffic in rhino horn.

Female lion (Panthera leo) called "Oshana" who resides with her male companion "Izu" and her sister "Mina" at Lion Camp, San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Conservation Status: Vulnerable
Young female cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) named "Maggie" who was born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Cheetah Breeding Center (part of the international Cheetah Breeding Center Coalition). Maggie now lives at the San Diego Zoo as an animal ambassador.

This individual is a subadult. He/she looks almost as an adult, except for the eyes. He/she has dark eyes that soon will become white as in adults.

The red-bellied grackle is endemic to Colombia where it is found in all three Andean ranges at altitudes of 800 to 2,400m (2,600 to 7,900ft) above sea level.
Its natural habitat is tropical forest, but the trees are increasingly being felled for timber and to make way for agriculture, and little virgin forest remains within its range.
H. pyrohypogaster was formerly classified as "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature but in 2012 the threat level was lowered to "vulnerable". This is on the basis that, although its forest habitat remains under pressure, it has been found at some new locations where it was not known before. The total population is now estimated to be in the range 2,500 to 9,999 individuals.

On a second sighting of this young male leopard, we found him even more hidden in the bush. Seems that he ate a good deal of the impala that he had caught the previous day and was in need of a nap. He didn't seemed pleased that we have found him again.

Elephants are mammals of the family Elephantidae and the largest existing land animals. Three species are currently recognized: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant, and the Asian elephant. Elephantidae is the only surviving family of the order Proboscidea; extinct members include the mastodons.
Elephants are scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia and are found in different habitats, including savannahs, forests, deserts, and marshes. They are herbivorous, and they stay near water when it is accessible. They are considered to be keystone species, due to their impact on their environments.
African elephants are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). One of the biggest threats to elephant populations is the ivory trade, as the animals are poached for their ivory tusks. Female koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) named "Tharah" (Aboriginal for "Thunder") born 11/1/2014 and living in the Australia Outback habitat at the San Diego Zoo. The Zoo has the largest colony of koalas outside of Australia, with 20 living in San Diego and more than 30 on loan to other zoos in the US and Europe.

The Madagascan fruit bat (Eidolon dupreanum) is a species of bat in the family Pteropodidae. It is endemic to Madagascar and is listed as "Vulnerable" by the IUCN because it is hunted as bushmeat.
The Madagascan fruit bat is found both around the coastal plain and in the inland high plateau. It requires suitable rock fissures and caves in which to roost during the day. Colony size varies between about ten and five hundred individuals.
Examination of the droppings from the Madagascan fruit bat show that it mainly consumes fruit but also feeds on the flowers of Eucalyptus spp.. It was found to fly as far as 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to reach trees of Polyscias spp. while largely neglecting the guava trees Psidium near its roost.
At times of the year when fruit is not available, this bat feeds on nectar. It has been observed to visit the flowers of the rare baobab Adansonia suarezensis and the kapok tree Ceiba pentandra. Wikipedia

I am used to seeing dead Kangaroos by the side of the road. I see them most days around where I live. However, I don't see too many dead Koalas but on this trip to Portland, I saw so many. Now I know why. They are so vulnerable on the ground to predators but in particular, cars and spend most of their time in Eucalypt trees where they are safe.
We came around the bend to find this fellow in the middle of the road. He was in no hurry to move on so we parked the car to alert on-coming drivers. He stared at me for quite a time, then causally walked off the road into the adjacent bush.
The fringe-eared oryx (Oryx beisa callotis) is a large antelope native to East Africa, primarily found in southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania. It is distinguished from other oryx species by the prominent tufts of long black hair at the tips of its ears.
It is currently classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Major threats include poaching for meat and horns, as well as habitat loss due to agriculture and competition with livestock. The total population of mature individuals is estimated to be between 3,000 and 4,000.

Leopard cub (Panthera pardus) born to Piccadilly female. The cubs, cautiously waiting for their mom's return, were ~3-6 month old when we saw them in July, one male and one female.
