WEMBURY BAY Sunset Taken on the 20th January 2012 at 16:31:42Hrs using a Nikon D3100with an AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR.

WEMBURY is a village, in Plympton-St, Mary district, Devon; on the coast, at the mouth of the river Yealm

In the distance is The Great Mewstone Rock. The Great Mewstone gets its name from the old English name for the Herring gull and these, along with many other birds, are the only inhabitants on the island these days. It is owned by the National Trust and as there is no public access, it is rich in wildlife and an important conservation area.

Among my neighbours is a young man who could best be described as a computer geek. Through him I have explored a whole new world of IT experiences, Virtual Reality among them. Last week I bought a Virtual Reality headset and software. Yesterday he installed and set up my VR device, allowing me to enter a new world of amazing possibilities.

With VR software I can travel anywhere and experience anything from sky diving to white water rafting on the Colorado River. From driving a F1 racing car to diving the Great Barrier Reef, and all without stepping outside my front door.

I shot this brief video of my neighbour interacting with a VR real life setting. My life has been transformed and this is only the first day. Adventure before dementia, that's me, just as described on the label.

These Victorian Railways rail tractors (RT) were used for shunting wagons within station limits, and could manage a maximum load of ~10 loaded wagons. They were basically a farm tractor engine and a cab built onto a wagon underframe. You can read more about them here.

RT33 operated at Korong Vale, and I was lucky enough to ride on the back of one when I was around 8 years old. Unfortunately, it was cold and raining on that day, and the driver was so busy shunting trucks that he forgot about me...I ended up with pneumonia, but I still think it was worth it ;)

In terms of the build, the cab took the longest to get right...lots of SNOT to get the window proportions right, and the doors recessed. The external mirrors were also a challenge. I'm still considering whether to make a RT33 decal for the side...

The Viking Research VR-599. No backstory, just a cool starfighter.

Pretty happy with the stickering on this one. Some of the stickers are Lego, some are from an Estes model rocket kit, and some are from BrickStix.

Although I have to confess that the Bristol VR was never may favourite of the '70s Leyland group trilogy, a fair number have passed our way and given us the ability to earn a living. Several had failed aspects of their driveline, but EWS 739W passed through for something of a body make-over and a re-paint in 2010. Thankfully we didn't have to take too many panels off as that usually sees a big job break out on an ECW. This photo was taken a mile or so away from RBW whilst the bus was being road tested.
